Been waiting for a V2 since Day 1; surprised it took this long.

You've gotta' hand it to Apple, they just know how good the hardware needs to be before releasing it.

They should put a HOLE in it.
Never going to happen. Apple loves expensive gadgets to wrap your iToys in.
Our province has battery recycling, but batteries are not accepted in household recycling pickup. I wonder how many just toss batteries into the garbage? 😩
Don’t know what country you’re in In my country (EU), you can drop batteries off in any supermarket and recycling centre. There are a lot of advertisements about the importance of not throwing batteries away. As a result, only 5% of batteries end up in the trash. (Although I’m a bit skeptical about this impressive number).

I vigorously rub it with isopropyl alcohol for a few moments and always works fine. Obviously easier to buy non-coated batteries, but it's not difficult to make the coated ones work.
Thanks, I'll make sure to give that a try next time. I was quite annoyed that the Duracells I'd bought wouldn't work. I don't know what Apple have done to make them not work, every other device I have that takes CR2032s work just fine with coated batteries.

I said this before about the bitter substance battery. I used them many times. I had no problems; Chinese types and others were made in Japan. I had No problem they worked. Maybe Depends on the thickness of the substance on the cells. If it's thin etc. All I had experience with was the bitter substance around the cell was there and the air tag worked.

It would be nice to get wireless charging for AirPods 2 so we don't have to buy an external CR2032 battery from Amazon or a local store.
Wireless charging and internal rechargeable battery...

... for AirPods 2 indeed if yours does not come with one already.

... for AirTag 2? No, thank you. How often do you replace battery in your AirTag? Once per year?

It does not make sense to drastically increase the price (and maybe even size) of the AirTag and make it throwaway item once the battery finally dies. Just because of one per year event of replacing the cheap CR2032 battery.

There's only a few things that can change… form factor, charging, or manufacturing.

Could make one smaller / thinner / wallet-y
Could make them with charging using the watch charger and recharging batteries
Could make them more waterproof or less "amendable", or colours, or improve range/transmission

I think they are going to have a very hard time improving these given the standards and power requirements. I'm personally expecting that they don't change the original, but offer a few more choices like a wallet option, or some sort of car option. Would be interesting if they can charge via motion, like some watches do - think bicycle; enough movement by simply riding. They could also offer NFC type of scenario where there is no battery, but I'm not sure it's in a usable state for tracking - just too much transmission power needed.

But they're pretty boxed in because of how good it is, and the size of a battery needed to run it.
This really needs family sharing. That is the one feature they lack that makes it pointless at home. My device is the only way to find anything.

I assume that was a typo and you meant AirTag 2?

Anyway, I agree but for me the big plus for a rechargeable battery would be that it would open up the possibility of alternate form factors. For some of my uses I would find a credit card sized AirTag way more convenient particularly for my wallet but also for sticking onto the back of a few things.

The current form factor also has its uses, e.g. on a key ring, so I could see a place for both form factors being offered.

Yeah, god forbid you have to go through that hardship.

Built-in batteries are basically a death sentence. As soon as you put too many cycles on the battery, you throw away the device.

I easily see AirTag also being a very small chip or sticker to be integrated everywhere…
It's not a bad idea but it would have to be integrated into a device. Much of the space in an AirTag is taken up by the battery. Smaller battery = shorter life. Apple seems to feel that the current form is ideal.
