Apple plans to launch a second-generation AirTag in May or June this year, according to a post today from a leaker known as Kosutami.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that a new AirTag would be released in mid-2025. May or June would align with that timeframe.

Below, we recap three new features rumored for the AirTag 2:

  • With a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the AirTag 2 is expected to have up to 3× longer range compared to the current AirTag. The chip debuted in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding for People feature that can help you to find your friends in crowded places, and it offers a range of up to 200 feet/60 meters.
  • The new AirTag's built-in speaker is expected to be more difficult to remove or tamper with, as an anti-stalking safety measure.
  • The new AirTag is rumored to have improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro.

The original AirTag was announced during an Apple Event in April 2021. In the U.S., an individual AirTag costs $29, and a set of four costs $99.

Kosutami is best known as a collector of prototype Apple products, but they have occasionally shared accurate information about Apple's future plans. For example, they accurately revealed that the iPhone 16 Pro would be equipped with a metal-enclosed battery many months before the device launched. However, their August 2024 claim that new AirPods Pro would be coming "soon" did not pan out, as AirPods Pro 3 have yet to launch.

In another post today, Kosutami seems to be once again implying that new AirPods Pro are on the horizon, along with new Apple smart home accessories. Apple is expected to unveil an all-new smart home hub this year, and it is also rumored to be working on a Face ID doorbell and a smart home camera for release in 2026 or later.

It needs an easier way to change batteries. Right now there's absolutely no way to grip it to change batteries, as all the parts are too shiny and slippery. Also, it could be thinner. The weird bump profile adds unnecessary thickness to the design.

I give the originals a C for design.

Don't have any. But, if I did get them I would want to removed the speaker and put it in my car.

I understand the reason behind it but I should be able to track my stuff without alerting thieves.
If you live where I do this won’t help. The police are instructing victims to just file a case with insurance and they don’t bother helping retrieve your property.
Seen and heard this in many places so up to you if you want to still use it in your car.

"The new AirTag is rumored to have improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro."

who tf asked for that? who's going to put on their dusty APV to go hunting for their lost AirTag?
How does it hurt you that it works with an Apple Vision Pro, or even a Commodore 64, if you don't own them?

Excluding the latest iPhone, the iPhone 16e.

Not sure what the improved integration with the Vision Pro could be given that it doesn't have a UWB radio.

I wonder now that Bluetooth 5.3 has something similar to precision finding, if they’ll implement that into AirTags (in addition to the ultra-wideband chip) for better compatibility with devices that don’t have ultra-wideband; the 16e, Vision Pro, Siri Remote, headphones, etc.

Being able to precisely track devices on the Vision Pro with the use of a signal instead of optics will be useful for the future, regardless. Historically, most features in development that appear to come out of left field are often building up to something greater.

OMG. Changing the batteries not even that big of a problem.

If you live where I do, neither the police nor the insurance will care. You will have to hire the right kind of people and get your property back yourself!

Exciting, can’t wait! Will definitely pick up some of these on launch day! The one thing that annoys me about the first gen is the bad finding integration. It literally have to be next to it before it finds them. Defeats the purpose of you ask me. 200 feet would be a welcome addition. Would make them infinitely more usable.

What? Who the heck has a problem to twist it open? Maybe remove the ski gloves first??

This will probably be Apple's answer to those wanting game controllers

A WWDC launch is probable. Other than an increase in range, there might not be any other changes. Expecting the same price to continue. Will be good if it were made available in black colour too.
