Well, then you learned the wrong thing.

You will hardly get any external tracking from a Tile, personally I never managed to get a single external reading. There are simply way less people that have the Tile App installed than activated iOS devices.
Obviously. But the current discussion here is about (lack of) privacy, not performance.

I presume that a person who does not have an iPhone would never know they were being tracked by an airtag. Sure, there are a lot of ways to track a person, Apple just made it easier.

I think the stalking thing does not matter by now, stalking devices can be easily found for cheap prices. Probably just pop in a sim card and through it somewhere inside someone's car or bag and you can stalk them all day long.

Apple Tags won't make much difference for those who are looking to really follow you around.

This may be a dumb question but how are the existing features of family sharing and Find My any different? Likewise, how is this different in principle from any of the medical devices out there that CAN track you and whomever you like?
This is different in that it relates to a new Apple Product and everyone knows those get LOTS of clicks. First the “They don’t work” stories, then the “They work too well” stories, and next up, we’ll have a reputable “Security Expert” let us know (after you’ve taken 15 very obvious steps that you’d never do accidentally or on purpose unless you knew what you were doing) that the AirTags can LEAK SENSITIVE INFORMATION ABOUT YOU!

No, there’s easier. There’s LOADS easier, AND cheaper. And you don’t have to tear the cheap ones apart to remove the speaker because these other devices don’t HAVE speakers. I suppose if you want to track someone AND happen to suffer from nullumaluphobia, these will be just what you were looking for.

So how does this compare to the competition?

just better headline and more clicks bashing Apple.
Apple clearly did more than the competition. But, the competition doesn't have this issue as their network sucks. You can't track someone with a Tile nearly as well because there aren't enough Tile users out there. Apple's network is a game changer for this market. For the first time, you can track your things almost non-stop. Unfortunately, this also means that people can be tracked, and abusers will do this.

My problem with the articles is that it is very easy to show the shortcomings. Unless there is a law against this kind of device + network, that doesn't mean that Apple shouldn't create this. If they don't, somebody else will. So, what alternatives are there? What can anyone (Apple in this case) do to improve?

Well whatever people use them for that Apple doesn't support and that ends in tragedy is on the user, not Apple. What I've noticed on this forum is some here like to play the victim when it's 100% their fault, but refuse to take any responsibility for their actions and somehow try to find a way to blame Apple just because Apple is a giant. This is not gonna go well for people attempting to misuse the Airtags.

Spot-on analysis. Sadly, that's the social media world we live in. Everyone now has a voice and can participate in the victim game, embarrassment be damned, as you outlined above.

Amazon is not the Washington Posts parent company
I’m not going to play the shell game here and unpack every layer of corporate insanity, but if you follow the chain of holding companies they’re all companies basically held by the same individual.
Maybe because Apple in their Keynote claimed all of those "industry first" anti-tracking features, they have opened themselves up for a little bit critisism when they don't turn out to be quite as good as folks hoped / expected?
C’mon. Use your critical thinking here. This would be like a cigarette company writing an op-ed that criticizes a cure for cancer because it only works 97% of the time. It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t so idiotic.

But, if you scan for them, they know you’ve connected to them and can transmit your location to someone. FAR better to just keep your phone in a “Faraday Phone Case”.

Keeping your phone in a Faraday case won't protect you from being tracked by an AirTag or similar device. The AirTag itself would need to be in the Faraday case.

Can any stalkers chime in and state whether it is better to use AirTags, or go the more traditional method of stalking by sending Echos to those you want to know everything about?

Quick survey showed only Bezos opting for the Echo method all other pro stalkers preferred Airtags for ease of use. And you can put emojis on them. Double win.

What is the difference for the purposes of my argument???
It's not about one person being able to track a specific device, which both can do, but the ability of others to all=so track it unbeknownst to either party.

Cellular - sending signal to tower so unless you have a device that can spoof cellular towers or otherwise garb the signal you cannot intercept signal

Airtag - sends signal and (encrypted) data to cell phones nearby, which has the potential for detection and tracking by a 3rd party in the vicinity.

Think of it as the difference from being able to track a cell phone from what tower it pings where you need access to the tower data; vs. a bluetooth device that constantly sends out a signal saying "Hi. I'm a device nearby." Sort of like a bluetooth beacon, except encrypted and not being used to locate other devices.

I'm not saying it would be easy to do, but a security flaw in Airtags would potentially mean every iPhone or other phones compatible with Airtags could be used to track them because of how the report location.

Tile is mostly for finding things in the Bluetooth range of your phone. Like the misplaced keys or wallet. You can't imagine how many times Tile has saved my bacon by letting me quickly locate my keys when I needed to leave in a hurry but couldn't locate my keys without pinging the Tile tag attached to them. The Tile app also has a proximity indicator that helps you figure out if you are moving closer to the Tile tag or father away from it, which is helpful if it's somewhere in the closet in your pants pocket and you can't hear its chirp until you move much closer to it. The combination of the proximity indicator in the Tile app and the audible chirp sounded by the Tile tag help you quickly locate the item in the Bluetooth range of the phone.

Apple is using a similar concept (I hope) with the AriTag when the iPhone it's paired with doesn't have a U1 chip.
Ah. Didn't realize Tile was limited to Bluetooth.

So will the article get cloned for the Verizon tracker? Or just other phones in general since you could just put one in the car of your spouse. Ludicrous article. If you want to track someone it is easy.

You don't have to play the shell game...it is a statement of fact, Amazon is not the parent company of the Washington Post; so they may be both the owned by Mr Bezos, but if you think Jeff is somehow is behind some gentle critisism of Air Tags on the hope it might help improve profits on Amazon, then that would be officially hilarious!

As for Apple coming under some critisism for making some claims that they have introduced some "world firsts" then in my opinion they're fair game; if you don't want your claims to be scrutinized, don't make em...and lets be honest with your cigarette company analogy, they would be critisised to...wouldn't they?..and we would both agree, hilarious!

What is bafflling is people getting bent out of shape because their favourite electronics trinket company is getting a little bit of healthy critisism.

There’s a difference between “healthy” criticism and just plain criticism. Depending ones’ point of view it could go either way.

If you want to track people, a tiny android device with GPS and a SIM card makes a lot more sense than these things.

Ok, but what's to stop someone from just planting a burner Apple device and using Find My to stalk them? Article makes fair points, but Airtag does more to avoid these issues compared to other ways Find My can be abused.
Nothing, except phones are expensive, heavier and will be dead after a day. Unless you’re wealthy enough to buy a Pro Max as a burner, in which case you’ll be able to stalk them for a day and a half.

See, this distinction doesn't make any sense to me at all! Why was the item lost? It might be because I misplaced it, or because I dropped it, or because someone stole it. I have no way to know.

An item which is stolen is also an item which has been lost. The two go hand in hand.
So I go to my garage in the morning, find the door bust open and my motorbike is no longer there. I go back inside the house, feeling despondent and angry. My wife says what’s wrong?! I say I seem to have lost my motorbike. She says you lost it? What do you mean you lost it? I watched you put it in the garage. I say yeah I did. But now it’s lost. The door was all bust open and- she says what?! The door? You mean it was stolen?! Somebody stole it? I say yeah it was stolen, I guess. And now I’ve lost it. She says lost it wtf? Some acehole has stolen it. Right. I’m calling the police. good thing you put that Airtag on it...

Not sure what good an airbag will do you.
Just sayin’ ;)
