AirTag Tidbits: Maximum of 16 Per Apple ID, Low Battery Notifications on iPhone, and More

You clearly don't have children. Our remote gets lost nearly daily. Now by "lost" that just means stuck in a cushion or thrown in the toy box or taken to another room. But being able to pinpoint that location instead of searching everywhere every time would be huge for my household. The first AirTag I buy is going on our living room TV remote.
Exactly. Breeding is bad for the planet. I rather be able to keep up with the stuff I pay for than huge inconveniences everyday.

But you can put a poop and a unicorn on it. Stop whining.
I lose my toilet so often, at least I’ll be able to track that.

Seriously though, it really isn’t a big deal, just a weird and limited selection of compatible emojis... basically just some random ones, Chinese zodiac signs, and then a bunch of numbers and letters in circles

yea, obviously, but if you have an airtag hidden in your bag somewhere — it could be a different story.
Different story ? I know that story , I put my Batman suit on , drive to the criminals lair and kick their ass to retrieve my stuff !!! In all seriousness , the police won’t be driving you around in a patrol car trying to track down your bag , they don’t care , you will file a complaint and they will do nothing about it , as they do nothing today.

how? In a what way planet cares or suffers for people and the effect of the people do or do not. IMO - it may be the planets goal to overbread people for the next step in evolution.
The poeople on the other hand are definitely f*cked no matter what.

D o N O T mistake people for planet!

Apple specified that these are not designed to track stolen items. They are designed to track lost items. So yes, it will notify the thief that your stolen item is being tracked.
Exactly and just like when they turn your iPhone immediately on stealing it so to will they remove or turn theses off

What I so far hasn't seen anything about (but maybe I haven't really looked for it either) are the technical details of the implementation. How do these things really work, behind the scenes?

Is it the iDevice which sends out a request to any AirTags within its vicinity, or the AirTag which broadcasts its presence to nearby iDevices? Is this done continuously, as in all the time, or at some reoccurring interval? Every second? Every 10 seconds? Every minute?

In the interests of conserving battery life (on both ends) I can't imagine wireless transmission being active all the time. For the same reason it also seems logical that it is the AirTag broadcasting its presence, or else their batteries would drain much faster in crowded areas when responding to requests from hundreds or even thousands of devices in the same area.

Then there is the question of how much of user's cellphone data plans this will begin to consume as AirTag adoption spreads. How long will it take before an iPhone in say NYC can expect to pass by thousands of AirTags daily? Ten thousand? A hundred thousand?! How much data is transferred to Apple's servers for each AirTag encountered?

Is it possible for a user to opt out of being a Find My network node, or is it always enabled whether you like it or not on any device with iOS 14.5 or newer?

A handy feature would be for the AirTag to notify you, when you left the item (which has the AirTag on/in) when you were a short distance away. Basically a geo fence feature.

For example, if you left your bag in a restaurant, and the AirTag would send an alert to your iPhone to tell you the bag had been left. Or, if travelling on a train, and you left a bag on the train, you could be notified before leaving the train. This kind of loss prevention feature would be extremely useful.

I'm sure I have read of this feature been on other similar tags. It’s a big feature omission in my opinion that the AirTag doesn't have this feature, especially when other similar tags have it.

So, you are forced to join a Family sharing if you don't want to be annoyed all the time with other tags of other people in the house? What about a close co-worker?

you may find it hard to believe, but in some cities they would do that. also if we're talking about some punk jacking my bag, i want to know where that f-k is.

The sharing thing seems like a bit of a mistake. You can't have use AirTags for a whole family to be able to track a shared set of keys or a bike or luggage. It looks like only one person can actually track an item. With the improvements made with Family Sharing made in recent years, it does seem a bit short sighted not to allow family tracking of AirTags.
Very true, but knowing Apple I wouldn't be surprised if that's coming somewhere down the road. Much like Apple Watch Family Setup.

Hopefully it will be a software feature, rather than something exclusive to an "AirTag 2."

So how long does the battery last?
Apple says a year of "normal use," but it also calls "normal use" making it play a sound four times per day and using Precision Finding once per day. If that's true, I suspect most folks will get more than a year.

Of course, this also depends on what kind of batteries you put in. There's a big difference in various makes of CR2032 batteries. I switched to using cheap dollar-store Sunbeam ones for my ecobee sensors a couple of years ago, and they only give me about 25–40% of the life of a more expensive Duracell or Energizer battery, but I can also buy three of them for a buck.

I guess if you live in a small enough place where this might happen , then bag lifting is much more rare as you will probably know the person who does it , there is NO chance you stop a patrol car in NYC and they drive with you into Harlem to retrieve your bag , but if some places the cops will do it , then yha thats nice!

is moscow big enough for ya? and i've encountered very helpful cops in nyc. and the complete opposite too, naturally. yup — harlem, where else would a thief go, right? :(

These direct Apple executive choreographed interviews are pretty cringe. Reminiscent of Trump being interviewed on Fox and Friends. Why not ask them questions like: Why in the world would you put a white bezel on an iMac. Why would you release such a disgusting powder color pallet. What are you supposed to do with an iMac with 512 GB of storage?!?!?!?!?! Why do you still believe the Magic mouse should still exist? Who cares about a purple iPhone? Why isnt there a 27in iMac model?
