Apple is full of curve balls. I sort of expected the tags to be wireless charging so you could set them on a watch charger or any other charger. I guessed watch based on size but a CR2032 works too. I will pick up at least a 4 pack and put them on a few items and have one for checked bags when I travel more.
I am very interested to see how these would work on a checked luggage. Of course it has to be placed inside to avoid it been stolen but wondering how well would it work.

Probably a stupid question, or I missed something, but where do you get the carrier tags ? (Not the Hérmes ones) How do you attach it to a key chain ?

You might need to check with your airline if you're planning on using this inside or attached to checked luggage. Some are VERY strict about any battery inside luggage these days, even if they are technically compliant. Should be no issue with carryon usage.

For those that don't know, CR2032 is about the size and weight of 2-3 US quarters stacked. They're in almost all smart tag devices and wireless Z-Wave/Zigbee.

I wanted these for my dogs, but you can't really engrave anything useful on them with a 4 character limit.

I need at least 4 AirTags to start 😅 One for my dogs collar, my keys, my bag, and 1 double sided to the Apple TV remote. I lose that remote every day on the hour. The second you look away, BOOM! Couch swallowed it up into the abyss. 😂 I do have my trusty Tiles which I highly recommend. It has saved me at least a dozen times in the last 6 months. No brainer if you tend to misplace things easily. Which I do a lot.
At first I was thinking I have no need for these but your idea about the dog collar is great. Worth every penny for that.

Ugh. What a missed opportunity. I hope they eventually allow engraving of a line or two of small text. Wouldn't it be a no-brainer if you're going to hang this thing on your keyring to physically engrave it with your phone number as a backup way for someone to get it back to you?

Four characters is useless.

the tag seems stupid but the software packed is awesome and its something others cant match. BUT one thing still left unanswered

"AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there.

Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, don’t worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner."

so if the thief has an iPhone he would know there is a tag attached?

On the upside, stalkers will also be discouraged from slipping one of these into their victim's bags. Looks like it's made to help you find things, not a theft deterrent.

I like the couch diving in today's presentation.

I've been waiting for those for soooooooooooo long.

I had the original TrackR, but they stopped working and the crowd sourcing never really took off. Never got into Tile; didn't like their design.

I'm gonna buy a bunch of those. I'm notorious for loosing/displacing things (or plain forgetting them on planes, traines etc.); years ago I lost an entire bundle of usb thumb drives and I never found it (might have fallen out of a pocket while on the go, somewhere). Men I wished I had something like that attached. Also: dog collar is a no brainer. Yes, we now have FI trackers, but those are big. AirTag will be an always-on redundancy and is small enough to even put on your outdoor cat (where I live, a lot of cats are being trapped and dumped by grumpy neighbors, never to be found).

I agree though, while the idea of customization is really nice, 4 characters really don't get you far. Being apple to put a phone number or name is such a no brainer. Hope they'll change that in the future - or gotta go custom engrave somewhere else.

Also would have wished for a little hole to attach a spring ring directly to the tag; those accessories can get damaged (thinking pets and luggage here) while unattended and loose the tag. But I guess that's just not quite Apple's style of simplistic and premium. Fair enough. Hoping for more "safe" 3rd party accessories

But overall, I'm so so so hyped. Apple did everything right with them, including the stalking safe guards.

Is this able to notify me when I go away x meters from an airtag? Not finding an tag when I realise it's gone.

it would be such a s.show if you had to charge these regularly — this way is sooo much better...
I would not want often, I just had in mind topping off a few times per year but I'm good with the battery option. They are easy batteries to find in stores. I keep them around for my Ecobee sensors, they need to be swapped about once per year as well.

I expected airTags to forego replaceable batteries!

Now Apple has no excuse to not allow for user replaceable batteries in laptops and phones... and watches...

If it works like Tile, it will work well. At some point, the bag will cross paths with someone that has an iPhone and report via that connection back to you. It would maybe reach you from the cargo area to your device. I plan to try it when I can. It would go in the bag for me in a front pocket.
