It looks like the SS model has dropped by £50 in the UK for the 44mm S6 compared to the S5. Could it be that the saving is the removal of the sapphire front? That was the reason I went for the SS S5 over the aluminium and a year later it’s still scratch free. If the Sapphire has gone that a major loss in my books.

Could be cheaper as they removed the charger.

I have talked to two different Apple reps.

First one said ALL watches now only have ion glass.

Second wine said he couldn’t find info and could neither confirm nor deny.

A bit crazy.... how do they not know this for such an expensive device?

For a 'fashion' item, you would think that they would list it. I wouldn't buy ANY watch without a sapphire glass front. I have banged my older ss apple watches against concrete and they looked new the day I sold them.

An internal Apple document I've seen listing the differences between the different models does list the Aluminum models as having Ion-X Glass and the Stainless Steel models as having Sapphire Crystal. Why this isn't on the Tech Specs page like previous generations beats me.

I'd be stunned if it isn't sapphire... not just because the premium price demands it but because Apple isn't stupid enough to "hide" this big a change from us knowing it would create press stories and returns... if they ever decide ion-x or other glass is good enough (and it keeps getting better every year) and decide to drop sapphire (i doubt it) they would make it clear to take the lumps up front instead of it being a negative surprise.

the real surprise is likely to be someone missed putting it on the spec sheets on apple.com ... i bet that gets corrected in the next 24 hours.

From Apple.com online chat just now

that's been standard since S4... the back of ALL apple watches has sapphire and ceramic for the sensor package against your skin. we are talking about the screen which is ion-x in the aluminum models and sapphire in all others. i think apple genuinely goofed not putting in the fact the screens are sapphire on the higher priced models and i'm sure within 24 hours apple.com will be updated.

It would be a huge PR nightmare for Apple if they had removed Sapphire and didn’t say anything. I think your assessment is accurate. Someone botched the tech spec page.

Disappointing if it's not Sapphire, Hope we find out soon.

I’d like to believe the sapphire will be included with the stainless. Why would Apple remove it, unless it wasn’t cost-effective anymore, not to mention, that’s a main separating feature away from the cheaper ‘sport’ model entry. Anyone that knows anything about that ion-glass, it’s garbage.

It most likely is still sapphire but Apple also removed the required charging brick so I wouldn’t put it past them.

I really hope the stainless steel models include sapphire crystals. I’ve been planning to upgrade to a series 6 for a couple of years now. If they don’t have sapphire crystals, I will not be upgrading my series 3.
