I currently use my iphone to navigate unknown areas, if it had turn by turn what would be the difference?

Do you depend on the device having its full rated battery life while you navigate?

Will your family's lawyers sue Apple because the device shut down just before it would have told you not to navigate yourself off of a cliff?

I don't have a 3G myself yet, but I have heard a lot of people say that the GPS antenna in it is really too small for turn-by-turn. Is that true? Also, doesn't the GPS tracking skip around a lot when in a car, as apposed to the smooth, accurate tracking when one is on foot in open air? If that's the case, wouldn't that make turn-by-turn difficult to follow and unreliable?

It would be awesome if they did develope it though!

Has anyone seen the T-Mobile G1 GPS? I thought I heard that it had turn-by-turn that was miserable, and I'm assuming its GPS antenna is at least similar to the iPhone's. Dont know if it's problems are hardware or software related though...

I have a car charger, never had any issues. Its not like I use it all the time, just for the odd occasion. I used it in a rental car in a city I had never been before. Found my way around town.

What is the difference between this and a regular Nav device? Let me answer that, NOTHING! Most GPS devices have a battery and can operate without being plugged in.

I really hope that they release a satnav app. I have smartnav (quick review: gash) and got the iPhone to replace it. I am getting fed up waiting now. I'm seriously contemplating just buying a tomtom device as it seems like it's never going to come to the phone.

Hopefully whoever makes turn by turn, doesn't have the annoying girl voice which is on so many of them. I am hoping for a Sam. L. Jackson version.

Oh now that would be cool... I can hear it now...

"... and I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger if you don't turn right in 100 feet!"
:D

Yeah, I hear you - I own a TomTom 130S, and it's been great. I would love a TomTom app, as TomTom routing in my area is outstanding. I wonder what additional TomTom features would carry over to the app?

Coming from a Verizon phone which had great TBT, the iPhone's is pathetic. Why wouldn't I just write down the directions on paper? At least then I don't have to look down, find a button, and then read the next step.

Plus, I don't think the maps app has the ability to figure out which direction you're headed, which is necessary. For example, sometimes it thinks I'm on the opposite side of the road as I'm traveling down it...

So I had to crack. I'm travelling the Uk next week in a hire car. I just ordered a tomtom one v4 with traffic updates. If we ever get TBT on the phone I will sell the tomtom ( unless the iPhone app is overpriced or the traffic updates are too pricey)
Any ideas on what they might charge? I reckon 60 to 70 GBP;)

Sounds good.

For other phones, it's about $150 USD for the app. Or $10 a month if the carrier sells it.

But unless Apple lets a nav app ignore the no-background-task rule, it's going to be a ridiculous implementation. Phone call? Oh well, no more nav.

Sometimes users on this forum say some really dorky things; to put things in context, the iPhone 3G with GPS has only been on the market for a few months. It took several years before adequate PDA Navigation applications were produced for Windows Mobile - Tom Tom Navigator, Garmin Mobile XT to name 2 popular ones - and so by contrast, waiting for a good iPhone Navigation application should not be a huge concern.

Moreover the initial price of PDA Navigation applications will likely start high - it's not uncommon to pay $75 or more for Windows Mobile PDA Navigation software - and then gradually reduce as usage grows. The price alone will likely scare away casual users and leave the market for those who really want / need PDA Navigation apps on iPhone.

My (limited) understanding is that the iPhone also needs background task processing to be properly implemented before PDA Navigation applications become usable for TBT, so who knows when that will be. Until then I will happily use my Garmin GPS for TBT. Cheers!

Really? Do most GPS devices tend to overheat when navigating while being charged? Have you asked most GPS nav companies how much they pay for navigation use liability insurance? Those are huge differences.

We will get Turn by Turn on the iPhone when God err Steve Jobs says we need it. For now you can email or call your final destination for directions. :D
/sarcasm off
Until they can get a charger that can power the iPhone and run the GPS+iPhone its totally useless. Read the threads scattered here about the iPhone dieing within 4 hours of google maps GPS use.

I find the iPhone GPS pretty useful. I plug in my route before I go, and usually I know most of the route anyway, I just need the final few turns. For this I can glacne at the screen. I did spend about £50 on a cradle that charges, which is really solid, and doesnt jiggle around. Also its just inches away from the steering wheel if I need to press a button.

See pics below. Also it keeps the iPhone charged completely, so when I'm done, and I take the iPhone out, I am armed with a full battery.

I highly suggest to everyone to not worry about turn by turn on the iPhone. Without built in maps, it won't work.

The other day I was driving out into a rural area that did not have phone service. Without internet access, the iPhone map function becomes useless. The little GPS locator dot just wonders around on a blank screen.

Luckily I had my trusty Garmin Nuvi to find the way.

The GPS function on the iPhone is neat but doesn't have any real practical use when you lose data service.

TomTom announced back in july they had a working app for the iphone and releaase was imminent. Since then, not alot. I personally beleive apple are holding this up for some reason, perhaps wanting to do their own, perhaps argueing over how they can make a fair bit out of it.

Whatever it is the fact is TomTom said they had it and it was nearly ready then nothing. Don't you think the navigation companies would be all over this if they had the green light from apple??

Just another example of apple crippling this device for personal gain. Put a gps in with no useful function, put bt in, again crippling it. I could go on....Idiots
