For some use cases I think the battery life gain might be far more than Apple is saying. I’m a Pro Max user so that’s the only one that I really care about and I’ve done some analysis based on the official Apple 12 Pro Max and 13 Pro Max specifications (here https://support.apple.com/kb/SP832?locale=en_GB and here https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-13-pro/specs/ respectively).

In the launch event Apple quoted 2.5 hours more battery life for the 13 Pro Max vs the 12 Pro Max and I assume that is a sort of average use case figure with a mixture of all sorts of activities during the day (or days if someone is a moderate user, I already get 2 day battery life from my 12 Pro Max). But if you dig a bit deeper using the specs linked to above you get the following application-specific increases according to Apple…

- Video playback (locally stored I assume): 20 hours for the 12 Pro Max vs 28 hours for the 13 Pro Max

- Video playback (streamed - WiFi or cellular?): 12 hours for the 12 Pro Max vs 25 hours for the 13 Pro Max

- Audio playback (locally stored I assume): 80 hours for the 12 Pro Max vs 95 hours for the 13 Pro Max

The streaming video figures seem anomalous to me, 12 up to 25 hours? Either there is a typo on Apple’s spec page or the 12 Pro Max figure is for streaming over a mobile network, maybe even 5G, and the 13 Pro Max figure is for WiFi or some other sort of change in the test case definitions so that it’s not comparing like with like. Whatever the reason I think it is best to ignore that number but that still leaves us with the locally stored video and audio playback figures where the 13PM gets 40% more video playback and just under 19% increase for audio playback.

The increase for audio playback is pretty much in line with the rumoured 18% increase in battery capacity (we have battery capacity increases confirmed but we won’t be able to confirm the exact mAh increases until people start doing teardowns of the new models). But that 40% on video playback is well above what I would have expected from Apple’s “2.5 hours longer” comment in the presentation.

My theory is that, as well as the gains from a bigger battery, the video playback is also benefiting from ProMotion adaptive refresh rates. I’m not a video expert but aren’t movies filmed at 24fps? If yes then presumably the screen adopts that refresh rate or close to it rather than the 60Hz of the 12 Pro models which could be a decent power saving.

If that is what’s going on then it could be a huge win for me because a big percentage of my usage is reading ebooks and listening to music so when reading an ebook I would hope that the screen clocks right down to 10Hz refresh rate and I might get well above 50% more ebook reading time between charges, maybe even double or more.

Finally, back to the streaming video anomaly. I do still suspect that it’s a typo or change in definition but just possibly one other factor that might be at play is that if the streaming is over a mobile network in both cases might the latest 5nm Qualcomm modem in the 13 Pro Max account for at least some extra gains there? I really can’t see it being enough to more than double the number but it is at least something else to conside.

Yet again I’ll be placing my upgrade order as soon as ordering opens on Friday simply for the battery gains alone.

Seems like a flaw, no? If I'm home with WiFi that works perfectly and WiFi calling, my phone doesn't need to care about where a cell tower is.
No. That's just not how it works. It will always search for cellular service if it is roaming or in a no service situation. If you don't want it to, you would need to engage Airplane Mode.

I'm not a fan of this behavior. Apple should let us manage our own storage space. I have 2TB cloud storage. I should be able to leverage that for the 4K Oscar winning movies I'll be making.
How do you plan to film a movie with 128G local storage? If you’re aiming for Oscar you can afford to buy 1TB version.

I'm curious what the file size per minute will be for this new format, I'm betting that's what the new 1TB option will be good for.

Also I wander if that is a "Protecting the user" so they don't use too much storage, or if the 128GB option is a slower SSD?
Could be a slower write ssd. Most probable is they’re preventing ppl destroying their ssd’s endurance via overuse of ProRes. Either way, should let the user decide obvs, not lock it out at 1080p

It's a S upgrade year :)

If it is ... it's THE BEST "S" upgrade year EVER!

‌iPhone 13‌ mini's battery lasts for up to 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 mini,!!!
I don't think any S model had 1.5hrs longer operational time, let alone longer audio/streaming times of 5-12hrs across the lineup.

challenge is on ;)

WOW ... ‌iPhone 13‌ mini's battery lasts 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 mini!!

Decisions ... man o man: Longer battery life, smaller notch chunkier body (I like me some chunky in my tech gals lol sorry being sassy) ... or ProMotion on the Pro.

I'm going to wait 40 days to see if any issues on Len's flare occurs.

Okay while I still have this phone for another week, I'll do that for a day but my point earlier was still that while I was in airplane mode during a flight, I still lost 40% of my battery:

I was flying all day and jamming to music for a bit then I read on my iPad and the phone still got drained.

Is the fact that I have 150,000 huge photos my problem? I have a 2 terabyte iCloud photos library. anyway I'll stop replying. clearly my phone is broken and I'm looking forward to upgrading.

That’s pretty good. I’ve actually been happy with my 12 Pro Max battery life until recently. Suddenly my battery health has dropped to 91%. My wife’s 3 year old XS still has 90% battery health and my dad’s XS Max has 94% battery health. I’m starting to wonder if I have a defective battery as it has never been exposed to extreme temperatures.
no, your batt is fine

Wait. Cinematic mode is only available on 1020 30p?
Makes sense from a technical point of view, but should have been pointed out as it goes against the idea of the iPhone being suitable for making movies (which it is, if you unlock its potential with the right apps and accessories).

I think a lot of people have missed that the iPhone 13 can now do Dolby Vision at up to 60Hz.

So-called rumors..... no always-on display missing; AW7 no flat edge case. Its why I never place any credence on upcoming devices.

Have fun making movies on your iPhone. I'm sure your grand kids will love them!

my iPhone 12 Pro has 89% health but my old iPhone 11 Pro that I handed down to my daughter still has 100%. This doesn’t add up.

Waiting for the YouTube videos comparing the 13 Pro max battery life to the 11 pro max.

Does it feature bigger batteries? They mentioned bigger batteries for iPhone 13. But nothing for the Pro models. The Pro models should feature Qualcomm X60 modem. This and the ProMotion display should count for wast improvements in power efficiency by itself. I don't really think the batteries in the Pro models will be that much bigger, if bigger at all. Then I would expect battery life to improve even more.

The iPhone 13 does not get ProMotion so they won't have this benefit and I'm not sure if they will be staying on the Qualcomm X55 modem or move to the X60 modem. If they are still on X55 then the non-Pro models would obviously have to feature bigger batteries to get their gains in battery life. The Pro models don't.

I suspect the increase in weight on the Pro models are tied to the larger camera array.

Still no headphone jack... I’m sticking with my 2016 iPhone SE for now.
Apple will never make me pay hundreds of dollars for inferior AirPods.

All of the 13 models will have the X60.

I'm happy about the watch rumor. I thought those flat edge renders looked like something you'd get from Wish. I haven't worn a watch since probably 2005 but I'm tempted!
