The second phone I carry has this feature totaling 12gb of ram. I wonder if Apple would ever entertain something similar to how they do swap memory on MacOS or page file on Windows

They should be required by law to disclose the amount of RAM in the phone. This isn’t a trivial spec, it’s the single-most important thing that will determine the phone’s lifespan. The fact that they don’t want people to know speaks volumes.

I hate when people say "specs don't matter". They do when they impact performance and longitivity of a device.

I like to think there's an alternative universe where there's not duopoly in phones. Where phone technology stopped around 2006 for the average consumer, and those people aren't online to the extreme that we see today. And those that are (enthusiasts) and have smart phones have a choice of OS and hardware to the point where one could upgrade the ram on their devices.

That would be a really nice world to live in.

Apple never publicly advertises the amount of RAM included in iPhones, but MacRumors has confirmed that all four iPhone 16 models are equipped with 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence. We uncovered this information in the latest version of Apple's developer tool Xcode 16, with assistance from @iSWUpdates.

This means that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have an additional 2GB of RAM compared to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have the same amount of RAM as the equivalent iPhone 15 Pro models.

New RAM amounts:
  • iPhone 16: 8GB
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 8GB
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 8GB
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8GB

Previous RAM amounts:
  • iPhone 15: 6GB
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 6GB
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 8GB
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 8GB
The same Xcode files accurately revealed RAM amounts for the iPhone 15 models last year and in several previous iPhone generations.

All four iPhone 15 models will be available to pre-order starting Friday, September 13 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time in the U.S. and nearly 60 other countries and regions. The devices are set to launch one week later, on Friday, September 20.

Unless you're a pro photographer, apart from a third camera, there are hardly any differences in the features between the standard & the Pro phones.
Never thought I'd see the day 😏

In other words, wait for 12GB RAM unless you prefer to have the bare minimum for AI.

Look yo, I've got an iPhone 7 32GB that I use for my business line; and iPhone 12 mini for personal line.

I'm soooooo over apps crashing; not being able to watch a Discord stream while using ChatGPT while scrolling on Reddit.
I'm soooooo over Zoom crashing when I switch to look for a document to share.

Wait, wait wait wait wait is always the mantra. I've waited. like 7 years and 4 years; I'm ready man.

Oof planned obsolescence on these right out the gate. Apple Intelligence 2.0 requires 12GB of RAM featured in the iPhone 17 and up.
17 Pro is rumored to stick with 8GB according to Kuo. Only 17 Pro Max will get 12GB. The 17 “Air” is also rumored to get only 8GB of RAM.

LOL yeah, that was the iPhone 6 with 1gb ram 😆😆😆
Next year we got the 7 with double the memory (2gb) which solved everything.

I’m definitely waiting for 17 with 12gb of ram
Are you planning to get the 17 Pro Max because according to Kuo, that’s the only model getting 12GB.

same phone with a couple new buttons, maybe they know they'll get most people on 14 or earlier to upgrade to 16 Pro, then 17 will be the one for annual upgraders!

Think of iPhone 13-14 users, they will both be obsolete the same year. I feel like Apple is gearing up to do that with the series 6-8 watches (pretty much same tech in all), and maybe even with iPhone XR/XS and 11 gens next year.

But 8GB base seems fine to me for a phone. Don’t the higher capacities have more ram usually?

My S7 and 13 Pro are still going strong. But I will consider replacing the watch next year with a true anniversary edition that seems to be coming.

16 Pro looks good but I'll wait for reviews and probably the 17 Pro. I'll almost certainly be ready by then. Hopefully a better update coming to that one.

And here is where RAM-aholics get it wrong. 8GB of RAM is a massive amount of runtime memory. But no amount will be enough if software is bloated and non-optimized. By keeping RAM at reasonable capacities, Apple encourages developers to optimize. It's better for consumers. The last 16 years is proof of that. Only rarely has insufficient RAM been a real problem.

Adding more RAM is a fruitless goal. Because then no amount will be enough. The goal should be efficiency.

With this RAM news, I’m struggling to see the value in the Pro, apart from some very niche features.

Coming from a 13 Pro, I’m very tempted to just get the 16, maybe the Plus.

Quite surprised.

...in which case i'm likely keeping my 15 Pro another year.

RAM upgrade would've been my only other incentive.

I think 8 gb ram is pretty dope. I’m typing this on my iPhone SE 2 that has 3 gb ram. Apparently the se 4 will also have 8 gb ram. Maybe I’ll get that phone eventually.

I don’t care how much RAM it has as long as it works well. They’re probably also looking at how much power is needed to maintain 50% more RAM.

I still love my 14 Pro and for the first time I feel no inclination to replace it. At all. And I’ll live happily without the AI features.
