The not-Pro iPhone is so good this year. So good it looks like Apple is trying to push AI more than selling Pro phones.

Which make me think, Apple Intelligence subscription in 3…2..
It will have to be really good and useful for that to happen.

Right now the benefits of an AI infused OS are marginal at best.

Having a thoughtlessly composed email rewritten by a machine or checking your mom's flight status are not really features worth spending a subscription fee on and I'm pretty sure Apple knows it.

In the mean time all that Microsoft could muster in terms of AI in their OS was a screenshot indexing feature, that was nothing but a constant security risk and a privacy nightmare, so Apple definitely has to step up and make something leaps better than that.

Nice option, but I don't really care, because I'll always charge my phone overnight.
I do too, but it's very nice to have on unexpected or long days. Like when traveling. If I can just pop it on the charger for 15 minutes at an airport, or for 15 minutes between getting to a hotel and going for dinner. More convenient than having to carry a battery bank. Even if it's just to 60-80%, that will usually last me an evening.

Hard to believe they didn't mention this during the keynote. Especially since the 16 Pro has so little new features this year and this would be one of the major ones, at least for me...

Yes, it means it can charge faster (with an appropriate charger) and also wear out your battery health faster.
Nope, not with apple iphones, what they don’t tell you is that IT will charge up to 45W until your battery hits 80% then it drops to below 7.5 w until it hits 100%. Unless you disable battery charging features on the settings that’s the default standard.

keyword is up to, not all the time.

If this were actually going to be functional, it would’ve been one of the major announcements. So, guessing it may be there, but limited by apple.

Possibly in the future. But I think they really just want to boost lagging iPhone sales and compete with the Pixel which is advertising the same kind of things.

Biggest upgrade this year for me on top of the bigger 33 hour battery. I will be going from 15 Pro Max to 16 Pro Max.

This sounds like it may be similar to the iPhone 12 situation. At launch charging was limited but they eventually unlocked faster Qi2 charging with a software update. If this was available now I'd expect it to be on the website.

Why didn’t they mention this? It’s a big improvement over 27W.

My theory:

1 - they didn’t want to upstage the MagSafe improvement

2 - MOST people use the 20W adapter, so no change will be experienced for them.

3 - additionally to 2, even the 35 W charger with 2 USB-C ports can’t reach this high, only the ones that come with Mac’s, and most simply won’t do that.

So I don’t think they mentioned it because most will still be charging at 20W and few will ever experience beyond that, much less 45W

That's a nice feature to have in a pinch for sure but wouldn't want to do that daily.

I wish there was a way to set the charge speed for those that want it. Like, between 9pm and 6am at home, I want it to charge as slowly as possible. 5W is plenty. Anytime I am charging anywhere not at home or at work, give it to me as fast as possible. Heat and battery health be damned, I want it to fill up faster than Joey Chestnut at a carnival.

If true, they really should have said it in the keynote.

For me at least, if it does charge a lot faster, it's now one of the biggest new features in this lineup.
I was also waiting for this update and was confused by Magsafe charging now being faster than usb c? Apple obviously wants to mention their branded chargers over usb c, but I hope they didn't make the asinine decision to have Magsafe charging faster than plugged in.

Does this mean it charges faster? If not, what does this mean?

the Apple page states

Fast-charge capableUp to 50% charge in 35 minutes with 20W adapter or higher paired with USB-C charging cable, or 30W adapteror higher paired with MagSafe Charger
Yes. This was first posted on The Verge many hours ago where the first line of the article notes, "All the new iPhone 16 models unveiled this week can reportedly charge more than 50 percent faster through a wired USB-C connection than the previous series."

Of course. All AI whether Google, ChatGPT, Apple etc do/will offer a subscription since uses an incredible amount of compute that costs money. And at Apple's scale they would certainly need to charge for that, but is great that currently all three of the main players do offer a free version. As time goes on the different between the free and paid may increase for all those companies or one or more may eventually get rid of their free tiers or add ads which is the common strategy for most all companies with such subscriptions.

That's interesting.
I think we will not see a big improvement in charging time.
Maybe some higher peak power (45W max) when starting the charge, but i'm sure there is no real faster charging in total.
The Verge article that reported this hours earlier noted would be over a 50% increase in charging time. 45w is inline with the Samsung Ultra for the past couple of years, so definitely don't think they are referring to peak power. This will be a significant increase in charging speed.
