👍 100% agree.

Or at least restore the option to turn it off (as there was a few iterations of iOS back…)

Yes! The option to see the photo that plain optical physics dictates would be good. I can see the future will be akin to people wanting analogue audio over digital music. I know the iPhone lenses cannot compete with proper camera lenses, but I would still like to see images that have not been automatically manipulated to look “better.” I would like to decide how much, if any, digital enhancement I want to see. Many of my photos are for my own historical records of how the weather actually was, for example, but not what will impress people the most on Instagram etc.

iPhone 17 models are expected to launch in September 2025, so they are still over a year away.
Seriously, thank you for including this, for those of us holding onto older phones (13 mini) who sometimes have to look up what the current model number is!

All four iPhone 17 models expected to launch next year will feature an upgraded 24-megapixel front-facing camera, according to Apple analyst Jeff Pu.

In a research note today for investment bank Haitong, obtained by MacRumors, Pu shared a chart indicating that the iPhone 17, the tentatively-named iPhone 17 Slim, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will each be equipped with a 24-megapixel front camera with six plastic lens elements. By comparison, all iPhone 15 models are equipped with a 12-megapixel front camera with five plastic lens elements.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed that at least one iPhone 17 model would be equipped with a 24-megapixel front camera with a six-piece lens back in January, so this upgrade has now been rumored by multiple sources, making it more likely. Kuo said these changes will "significantly improve the image quality."

With a higher 24-megapixel resolution, photos can maintain their quality even when cropped to a greater degree, providing more flexibility in post-processing. A six-piece lens would also slightly enhance image quality, as each element is designed to correct for various aberrations and distortions, leading to clearer, more accurate photos.

iPhone 17 models are expected to launch in September 2025, so they are still over a year away. Rumors about the two-generations-away iPhones always begin quite early, as Apple develops and prototypes products well before they are released.

Iphone 16 pros need it first. Apple is so far behind competition it is embarrassing to charge a premium

Yawn, megapixel race with no real user benefit. The “crop” argument, 90+% of iPhone users have no idea what crop is …

I was hoping for no front camera.
iPhone [2G], iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS already exist...

Even if Apple decides to ditch front facing camera, there would still be a blank spot or hole on the screen for the Face ID sensors... Unless Apple brings back Touch ID in the form of ultrasonic scanner like the one used by Samsung and eliminate Face ID completely...

It's clearly in their best interest to over-spec the cameras at this point to generate larger image files -- because then if you want to keep all those big image files you have to either shell out for more storage on board ($$$ once) or pay for iCloud ($, but on an ongoing basis forever).

Apps don’t work anymore on those, web sites tend to not work on its browser, no NFC or modern Bluetooth, and 3G networks are being turned off.

No Face ID as well, of course (instead Touch ID on the power and/or action button), unless they can make it work under-display.

24mp on an iPhone is nothing but a marketing number.
That's not true at all. Just like "Live Photos", it's purpose is to waste storage by taking unnecessarily high resolution images, forcing people into iCloud subscriptions.

I can't recall ever feeling like "Man I wish my selfie cam had more megapixels"
This is what I was requesting until iPhone 6s introduced 5MP front facing camera, iPhone 7 introduced 7MP front facing camera, iPhone 11 series introduced 12MP front facing camera...

iPhone 4/4S - 640 x 480
iPhone 5/5c/5s/6 - 1280 x 960

For a photo taken with a front facing camera, I don't think we should go beyond 12MP

After all, the 24MP [shot using the main camera] on iPhone 15 series has a weird resolution and is not using a 4:3 aspect ratio like 12MP

This kind of upgrade should have been in the 16 series. Apple’s HW is lagging Android counterparts at the same price points.

Already thinking of the 17 while the 16 has yet to be reveal 😅. Good thing I'm not upgrading this year.

I've used the front camera on iPhones about two times since 2007 (I do use Face ID), and on my Mac I have them taped up.
My iPhone 6 was great, the 11 was a bit too much detail and now the 15 Pro is WAY too much detail 😅

I have tape over my 2010 MBP but I wont do that to my M3Pro MBP. I actually heard it can damage the screen due to tight close tolerances.
