Why would someone want to generate an image if it’s not realistic, or only have a slim amount of categories that can be created? I’ll probably still play around with Image Playground for a little bit, but I’m sure that’ll be short lived. I’d rather Apple take Google’s approach, even if the images created are inappropriate. I guess I can’t really complain a whole lot since I signed up for the wall garden and gate keeping of Apple.
I do this for my child using voice commands, and not even in English, since GPT understands any language! :) For example "Draw a happy, toddler-friendly rabbit happily eating carrots.' Design it in a way that encourages my child to enjoy eating carrots as well. "

This technology is fantastic! But the problem is, my child still refused to eat his vegetables.

Don't understand how Apple is getting away with marketing a phone as having something that it doesn't have. Now they have no choice but to release their AI even if it's still garbage which is what I expect.
All the ads I’ve seen here in the UK have a disclaimer strapline on them saying “Apple Intelligence coming in December 2024” or similar, but blink and you could well miss it.

It’s pretty obvious that Apple’s original plan was to release all of this in iOS 19, but they got caught off-guard by the speed with which others are rolling out their “AI” stuff and so jumped the gun and are rushing to get it out asap, hence it coming piecemeal.

I'm surprised the stuff like Image Playground and Genmoji are delayed. Image generation isn't the most difficult thing to train up - hobbiest do it on their home PCs.
You may be thinking about this in very general terms. I agree that the training is easy, but Apple has very clear goals for its art styles in this feature and they likely want to get it spot-on before releasing, like most of the AI features.

Never would have happened under steve jobs, what is going on? you don't get to just kick features that were supposed to be release with 18 down the road..
What do you mean, “supposed to be released”? Did Apple fail on a promise? Do you know what their completion dates were supposed to be?

Apple has always said that the features will be gradually rolled out. And this is a good thing, because although we wake AI for granted from other companies who have been doing this stuff for years, much is still new to Apple incredibly. So they’re taking their time to get each feature right, rather than just releasing it all and spending less time refining each.

When one sees the features that they’re building in that quite literally do nothing except consume water, energy and cpu cycles one realised that one can get away with an iPhone 1 and really not be too badly off. The more I look at this the more inclined I am to put off upgrading. I was a serial upgrader. This year I’ve said no as I didn’t see anything advantageous in the upgrades worth the money. I can see them focussing more and more on nonsense like the Siri glow and other rubbish I never use. Give me a phone I need to charge once a week with a big screen and a Siri type thing that actually doesn’t mishear and doesn’t say sorry I can’t do that and I’ll be happy with decent sound and memory so I can store lots of music on it (I live in a remote area so phone service means I can’t guarantee to get Spotify etc. plus I hate subscriptions).

That’s because your child hasn’t yet been assimilated. ;-). That’ll come in ios 19

Fan or hater?
If you mean me? Fan. I got my iPod in 2006, which led to my my first White Plastic Mac Book in 2007, Mac Book Pro 2009, iPads 1-4, last bought was 10.5" iPad Pro (want new one as I'd like iPadOS 18 on it), Apple Watch G1 returned, Apple Watch 6 second hand a year ago.

Been tech editor, and tech reviewer on various Apple Dev related books.

So yeah, im a fan of Apple. I prefer Apple over PC (except for gaming, but SteamDeck mostly covers what the Mac struggles with). But this set of OS releases is an ****ing shambles, highlighting things that at this point aren't going to be till mid next year.

It might not have been as big a draw this time around but they should have done another Snow Leopard release. Instead we have lots of little bits that will be fun to play with, but by the time they come out people likely won't care and will be wandering about macOS 16 / iOS & iPadOS 19 and are they going to have to upgrade HW to get those.

Everybody will be tired of these boring AI features nobody asked for before they're actually released, and partly because MacRumorus keep posting about them. We know already, you mentioned them yesterday!
I don’t have any inherent dislike of ai but the fact is it’s expensive on the environment (I’m not some environmental activist but I think we should try and look after the only planet we’ve got) and to spend money and pollute for a Siri glow or some stupid photo collage thing so talentless people can suddenly claim to have talent I find really quite obscene. This technology should be restricted to fixing the big issues of our world. Poverty, hunger, crime, overcrowding, global warming, inequality, disease and hopefully lead to a reduction in war and terrorism as a result. Instead we get the Siri glow and google and Microsoft’s equivelant. It’s disgusting.

You're right, they have not made this clear. I believe it is the Pro versions of the iPhone 15 and later. And then iPads and Macs with M1 or later. Hard to believe a phone you bought last year (iPhone 15 or 15 Plus) won't run an operating system just releasing now. Standard Apple bs move. I'm pretty sure if the four year old M1 can run it, a year old A16 and two year old A15 Bionic can do it too.
I believe deliberately make people confusing about what features requiring AI. it even worser for some of the new features are only available for certain regions (not disclosed in Apple web) for supported websites in English US only. I checked safari highlights on iPhone 16 in one of our local Apple Store. I could not make it work for any websites, but did not known if it is requiring AI, or not available in my region.

Per 9to5, it sounds like the “new” natural language search in photo app is also part of AI. But not so in macrumors.

How many people have been swayed to buy a new £1200 iPhone partly on the premiss of getting AI. Apple should have kept AI under wraps until either ready for a full roll-out, or for the iPhone 17 release. It's a bit of a PR disaster.

I think you're right. Apple got caught sleeping at the wheel! Now it's panic stations!

You snooze - you lose!

Gotta wonder what Apple's developers have been doing over the last year and month since these features weren't ready at launch.
I think the entire industry knows by now the reason why Apple is always late to the game. They’ve said many times they put safety and privacy of the user first, because of this it takes a much longer time to figure out how to implement these features.

I meant the post! It was sarcastic because it sounded like it was easier to list was is available.
Totally agree with you

Email categorization is NOT an Apple Intelligence feature, it's simply a "coming soon to english iOS" feature like there has been lots of these past years.
Email clients like Spark have been doing smart categorization based on email senders and surely other data for years now.

Honestly the pressure on the Apple devs to get this stuff out within a year is pretty intense. Even with a full complement of staff, the testing time required is short, and we are seeing it with the slow rollouts and bugs. Forcing the OS to be part of the sales pitch to sell hardware I think has caused a compromise in quality. I love new things and I enjoy watching the OS ecosystem morph, but I think this latest release is the buggiest since iOS13.
