Ok so I guess a more important question is: will there be some of those features tricking down to “weaker” devices like iPhone 14 Pro Max? Or Apple is adamant to go with “all or none” in terms of AI features?

Apple Intelligence is the foundation for all AI on the device. I can't see them aking anything which skips this.

Apple should really push back iOS 18 by 3-6 months and take some time to get these features solid.

Why bother even releasing a half-finished iOS 18, just to keep an arbitrary schedule? Is there anyone actually clamouring for features that aren't related to Apple Intelligence?

Short answer: Yes.

Lots of us have NO interest in the ridiculous AI crap. We'd rather Apple had avoided it entirely. It's not a compelling feature at all.

This is exactly my point: why bother with the iOS 18 release at all? Just push it back a few months and call what is currently scheduled to be iOS 18.1 "iOS 18". If an interim release is needed before then, call it iOS 17.7.
why delay the AI work further?

Often what happens is the the #.0 release goes onto the new devices so they can get started. Then either by the time we get the software release or in the next month after, we see the #.1 release. There is no need to wait a few months for most of the new changes and new AI features. Some of the advanced features will take a little more time but no need to hold up the rest just to have a tidy release package.

I get the excitement about new shiny things, but most features won't fundamentally change how people use their iPhones anyway. I was contemplating upgrading my iPhone 13 this fall, but I'm not even sure if it's worth it. I'm more excited about the prospect of finally having USB-C than any of the new AI features to be honest.
I know people that have updated their phones to a new shiny phone, both Iphone and Android users, and yet they do exactly the same thing with their new phone and use it the same way. In other words, what they have been doing for the last 2 years or so, don't need a new more powerful phone.

i blame the networks, certainly here in the U.K, get a new iPhone because we want your money, also pay a fortune for it and for your data, even if you don't need it.

i know people have different needs, but my Android phone is around three years old, it cost me £130 and it works fine, it takes pretty good photos, pretty good videos, more or less as good as you are going to get on a mobile phone. Sensors are too small. I pay a fiver a month for 2GB of data, unlimited calls and text.
I will keep it working as long as I can. I think some people get an expensive phone to show off. i know somone who used to always go for the top Samsung and used to show it to everyone.

No doubt there are some people that will use all the new features of their super-duper phone.

When/if my phone goes belly up, I am not sure what I will do, since I now have a mac in one way it makes sense to go for an Iphone, but to be honest I don't like IOS and the price puts me off.

The rumors for the upcoming SE4 look promising at a lower price.

Haha, iPhone prices are indeed insane. I only bought the most basic 13 model with a good discount, and still thought it was too expensive. The only justification for me is, that the phones are really durable, and you get around seven years worth of software upgrades, which makes the expense more tolerable. Also, the resale value tends to be quite decent after three to four years.

I have been contemplating going for a mid-range Android phone for a change. My dislike of Google's privacy practices is so strong, though, that I can't bring myself to try it.

The basic SE in the UK is £429, that is still £300 more than what I paid for my Oppo phone and my Oppo phone has a better camera, longer battery life, more stoarge and expandable storage, if need be. . The Iphone SE, is a newer phone than my Oppo by a couple of years, so yes it is a bit more powerfull, screen is slightly larger and it has 5G, which is really not that important.
i expect the new SE will have more features, but the price will be the same.

I have never paid more than £200 for a phone and to be honest I don't want to start now.

My oppo cost me £130ish, around 3 years ago, still going strong, been knocked around a bit, but still working fine and the battery is massive and still last for a couple of days

If it lasts for another couple of years , I have certainly had my money worth.
i kind of agree with you about Android/google privacy, but is Apple any different? It sees no matter what device we buy these days, everyone wants a bit of info from us, even some washing machines these days.

Not really that bothered about updates, my Oppo has had security updates over the last 12 months, but i don't think it will get any new features, but that suits me, it does what I need.
I can browse the net, send messages, phone people and even take some p[hotos and videos if I need to. But I prefer to use my DJI pocket camera or my Panasonic mirrorless.

what'd they even market when the 4s came out? or did they not bother to bring it to slovakia?
Of course they sold it in Slovakia, but since Apple doesnt have an official "store" here, its only resellers. But its the same in the Czech rep. for example. They have an official online Apple Store, but they don't support Siri in the Czech language. They just flat ignore its customers, but at least they have some kind of support there. In Slovakia, we dont have anything that makes apple customer service stand out against the competition. They just sell us the product and thats it, no customer care. And the prices are the same I might add...So we are getting robbed and we are financing the other customers. Again, it's a rant, but maybe a cry for help. I would like to ask influencers and people that have a "voice" to hammer this fact in their public appearances. Its a long standing problem.

This is what we used to call vaporware. Announcements, demos, details. But no actual product in sight. Release date TBD.
I'm using many of the new features now, and the ones listed here seem to be coming soon. Apple is actually pretty good at avoiding vaporware. Most of what they talk about does end up getting released. Real vaporware is something like AirPower.

What’s the waitlist time for Apple Intelligence ? Hours? Days?
Minutes IME.

Yeah fair enough about most of it. I'm really thinking about Siri that actually works the way they act like it does. They've been promising that for a decade. They're still promising it, and we still don't see it.

I've never seen a £200 phone except for carrier subsidized prices where you are paying more over time for the service.

I mentioned earlier that while the bar is low, Siri on the 18.1 beta is much better. I'm hoping this means when the listed improvements are released we'll see a big bump that continues to improve.

You would not if you are in the U.S, as you use Dollars :) but there are plenty of cheap phones out there. Blu is a big name for cheaper phone in the U.S, I saw them on amazon U.s for $99 TO $150, Samsung have some for around the $200 mark.
Motarola and Balckview produces phones under the $200 range.

In the U.K, we have phones like the Oppo, the Chinese ones the U,s government decided they did not like. Looking at the U.K. amaozon listings for mobile phone and looking at the U.s, the choice we have is so much more, but then we don't have a paronoid government, well maybe they are, but not as much as the U.S. government.

I can get a Oppo a77 for around £160, good psecs certainly for the price. If I wanted something from a better know company, I could get a Samsung A15 for around £130, but not as good specs as the Oppo and I am not a fan of Samsung.
The Iphone Se is around £360, well that is what I have seen on Amazon, Applke still says over £400 and that is a two-year-old phone.

As I said before, I like my Mac and I did not mind paying that amount for a Mac, for a powerful machine the basic Mac mini is a good deal, I went for the Mac M2 pro, which is still a pretty good deal, but I must admit, it is more than I have ever paid out for a computer in one go. But paying over £200 for a phone is in my opinion crazy. If that is all you use and don't have a computer, then maybe.
