I am not starting this thread to have a glossy/poll discussion. If you prefer glossy this is not meant for you, you are well served by Apple.

I just hope that the 70% of us who prefer matte over glossy all send a complaint to Apple to bring back the matte screen option for the MackbookPro.
A laptop that needs an anti-glare sticker is just not Pro. You pay good money for it. Expect something in return.
Everyone: http://www.apple.com/contact/feedback.html

Make this a sticky!

that would be 70% of the 0.01% of macusers...

Done. I own a MB glossy screen & 1 Imac non-glossy screen.

I just hate the glossy screen due to the eye-strain. It doesn't look as good at my old Imac with the non-glossy screen.

The only argument for matte that makes any sense is "Too much glare", and for that you can get a anti-glare "sticker" for it. If it costs $20 for the sticker but you save $100 in manufacturing costs, what's the problem?

For everyone who said "The colors aren't calibrated correctly", you shouldn't be using a laptop screen for graphics work anyway. Invest in a good external.

I have nothing against the option as long as it wouldn't cost more OVERALL. (as in they'd raise costs over the whole line in order to offset the cost of materials and equipment.) If it wouldn't, why not.

Would make these forums a lot more tolerable anyway.

Sticking a anti-glare sheet to the glass makes the screen looks somewhat ****. Sticking the same anti-glare sheet to the TFT makes some fonts appear even more bit-mapped than they should be, same goes for lines drawn in illustrator... it's just not perfect enough in my opinon.

If i'm gonna spend money on a new machine, it should be perfectly desirable, otherwise Apple should give me a discount for starring in the glarey screens all day, everyday.

Like I said I understand your reasoning and I'm all for the option as long as it doesn't give Apple an excuse to raise the base price. There is no evidence to suggest it would, but Apple doesn't even offer the stupid remote for free anymore. I wouldn't put it past them.

Hell, if they made it a $50-$100 BTO option you'd be happy (well...happier) and I'd be happy. Less options is never a good thing, though I'd sacrifice something I wouldn't of picked up anyway for a cheaper product. Got to look out for number 1! :D

these arent eee pc's. why cut down on the options???

lets say 90% of all users bought a glossy display out of the old models, that still leaves 10% being non-content.

this is one of many negative moves apple has made regarding customers and what we WANT.

you can release an ipod in 10 different colors, but only one option for a screen?

and im not one to complain. i could care less about the new macbook pros since im very happy with my penryn, but this is a drastic change for many, and shouldnt be over looked in my opinion.

An excellent point! If they can go crazy with color options on iPods, why not offer options for matte/glossy or different color keyboards? It doesn't make sense.

If you are really truly a professional, why the heck are you trying to do real work on a 15" notebook screen?

Bingo. I made the same point above, but you have to feel for the "eye-strain" crowd. Luckily I like my laptops as bright as the sun, with a matte external for any color work.

All those suggesting to stick an antiglare film on the MPB should instead stick a piece of tape on their mouth. Sorry for being that rude, but I don't understand why they feel the need to convince us that these screens are any good. Also answering like "just go and buy a Dell" is really, really childish. However feedback sent in the exact moment that Jobs introduced the thing but I'm not too optimistic. I have not really faith in Apple's respect for its customers.
However, really, what's so attractive in something like the attached image (stolen from a gallery posted on this forum) ? I don't need a 2000 euros mirror.

i took my 4 years old sony vaio laptop and compared the same photos side by side in the apple store london today:
oh my god, the new screens are so shiny! i got a glossy screen on my vaio too but had never been bothered so far. ok i have to admit that the picture qualiy, colours, details looked honestly 5 times better on the mac however the glare is just incredible!
21st century?

come on what am i gonna buy now? wait till january hoping that add the matte option.
i mean i am still very tempted to get the macbook pro however i am scared of regretting it.
how many per cent of its value it will lose if i was to sell it in january.
hey but wait i dotn wanna buy it i cant stand the glare

btw, im no graphic designer! but just a normal laptop user

Why are you restricting this complaint to professional, MBP users? There's a lot of MB consumers that also want matte. If you don't hear about that, it's because the lack of FireWire is a TOTAL deal breaker.

Right. I'm not using the pro professionally, but I care for ergonomics.

As much as I hate glossy screens, I just don't see matte screens coming back anytime soon. There's a reason the screens are glossy, its the glass panel, which now provides a significant source of the display's structural integrity.

For there to be a matte option, Apple would have to re-engineer a new display, so it would not be as trivial as choosing you're preferred display type. The Macbook Air's display is already pretty flimsy compared to the rest of the laptop, so that glass-less design wouldn't work too well on a 15" [or bigger] screen without making it thicker; and we all know Apple isn't going to do that.

What's with the damm obsession of making laptops thinner just for fun? They don't need glass, just a thicker and stronger cover.

well, i for one am a professional and i use my 15" mbp all the time for work (fcp). i really can't see how a matte screen would be possible with the new design, which is deeply unfortunate because the glossy screen is crushing my desire to upgrade.

i also really wish they had gone to 1900x1200 resolution (an option available from other high-end laptop companies in the 15" category) so that those of us working in hd could view in native resolution.

Well I voted with my wallet. I spent all morning at the Apple Store comparing an old matte MacBook Pro with a new glossy screened one. I really wanted to like the new glossy screen, because I just love the new trackpad and keyboard.

But I couldn't do it. The reflections were horrific. The point of laptop for me is so I can work where I want to. Not just wherever I can find to minimise the reflections off the screen. The blacks on photos just didn't look right either.

So I bought my first Mac today and it's a new old MacBook Pro. That's progress for you. I got a £200 discount for it being old stock so it's not all bad. The sales guy there told me he's supposed to send back all the old Pros, but my complain about the glossy screen is not the only one, so Apple have allowed him to keep the matte ones in stock for an extra week. That might be sales guy BS, but interesting all the same.
