Since we are playing the guessing game (with some pretty compelling evidence or you can call it whatever you'd like):

I'm predicting all the secrecy and you know Apple will drop a bomb come this tuesday. I'm not even that surprised if they changed the entire design of the phone considering the antenna gate scandal broke, it has been egg on face for Apple since.

What I'm wishfully thinking is Apple may even drop a huge bomb and the next iPhone 5 will have a quad core cpu or gpu. The iPhone is their bread and butter. I would not be surprised if the next iPhone 5 trumps the current iPad 2 specs; because if I were on Apple's iPhone team, no way in hell would I let google/samsung come back with the SG2 (even though it's a great phone spec wise) to slam the iPhone 5 even before it's released.

Then again, Apple can just sit on it's laurels and just do something similar to the SG2 specs. That would suck because no longer is Apple in the forefront of innovation. Specs do not make the phone a hot seller but for sure the power needed to make the next gen iPhone stand out is required.

I would not be surprised if there is some quad core cpu or gpu in the iPhone 5.
edit: Maybe after thinking a bit more, dual cpu, but quad core gpu seems more fitting.

plus the millions of the exact cases

there's 2 different sets of cases floating around though, one that's a redesigned phone, but the others are iPhone 4 ones with the mute switch on the other side, so if the fact these cases have been made are an indicator of what's coming out, then it's 2 phones.

Also how do you explain the 3rd gen iPod Touch cases with the camera hole the other year? Cases made do not prove anything.....

saying that, wasn't there some cases for the iPad 2 before it came out that turned out to be wrong?

the "frame" around is not nice.. looks like the old iPhones, hopefully it's just a mockup

The "prototype" was created based on leaked design documents. So the frame may or may not be correct. But the fact that it matches the icon that was released in an iOS 5 beta, almost exactly, tells me that 1. We are getting a total redesign. And 2. it's most likely going to look something like the prototype. It's more square, but its ust like the iPad2. Which makes sense.

There's one problem with what you just said; this 'mock up' is actually smaller than the current iPhone, while the 'millions of exact cases' floating around are all-around larger than the iPhone (except thickness).
That's what I noticed. I don't know what the heck that physical mockup was based on but it's not the same technical drawings ALL those cases used. This mockup doesn't match the size of anything we've seen so far and doesn't look big enough to even have a 4" screen.

you know that's not the iPhone 5....right?

I know nothing. Just like u and everyone else. All we have are rumors. I was simply pointing out that the leaked design documents match the icon released in an iOS 5 beta...almost exactly. For me, I don't think its merely a coincidence. The fact that u don't agree makes Tuesday's announcement all the more exciting.

Explain yourself though..why do u think my post is incorrect?

that icon could mean nothing, as was pointed out to me back when that icon came up, apple have used random icons for things like that before, on at least 2 occasions, so really, you cannot put a lot of reliance on that icon.

So is it a coincidence that the generic icon apple decided to use (which quite frankly is far from generic) matches the leaked design documents exactly? Maybe, but not likely. Or maybe Apple got their hands on the leaked documents and designed the icon based on it.

SUPPOSED leak design documents....

i'm not saying that the icon in photostream is not what we will see, just saying not to get your hopes up based on an icon, which is a small icon that really it doesn't hold that much weight..

also who's to say that the person that designed the icon for photostream has even seen the new iPhone? Apple compartmentalise, so it's highly unlikely someone working on iPhoto will be near the new iPhone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

That little icon, and AT&T stores getting matching cases are the only things giving me hope. Mostly the icon. Fingers are crossed big time, but if it's a 4S I'm just waiting on the iPhone 6 since my regular 4 runs perfectly well.

Well, there will be a redesign if you mention the mute switch being put on the other side based on the AT&T cases.

All the proof you need is that Apple hasn't squashed the rumors of the iPhone 5. If they didn't have anything redesigned to show on Tuesday, they wouldn't want people getting their hopes up.

Remember the rumors before WWDC? It seemed that almost all the news outlets simultaneously reported "inside sources" saying there would be no iPhone at WWDC this year. Apple wanted to manage expectations so people weren't upset when all we saw was Lion and iOS 5.

I guarantee you, if there was only going to be a slightly revamped iPhone 4, "inside sources" would be telling MacRumors, Engadget, etc that there was definitely no redesign this year.

actually there's no proof they've received them at the store, people are saying that AT&T stores don't get them packaged like that, that AT&T repackage them, so between that and an icon in photostream that was designed by someone who has, most likely, not seen the new iPhone. so these are very flawed reasons for hope.

But isn't that happening? The latest feeling among MacRumors, 9to5Mac, etc is that Apple is going to release an updated iPhone with the same design as the iPhone 4.

My one problem with this theory is if it was just a generic iPhone icon, why the elongated home button? Wouldn't they just put the typical circle home button that's been on every single iPhone to date?

Not the same. The sites now are saying, we don't know, but it's starting to seem less likely. I think if there really was no redesign, about 4 days ago we would have gotten "NO IPHONE REDESIGN ON TUESDAY."

Like this article from Mossberg: http://allthingsd.com/20110328/no-iphone-at-wwdc-2011/

have you look at the other post i linked to? they were used as a generic iPhone device image, one was even used in iTunes itself for the iPhone and looks nothing like an iPhone that's been released. I'm not saying it might not be right, but alot of people are putting far too much stock in it. Also the icon is small, so maybe a proportionally correct home button just didn't look right, only the person that made the icon will know, but as i say, it's highly unlikely the person had even seen an iPhone, Apple compartmentalise departments, the iPhoto lot that made the icon will not have been near the iPhone lot, but its just funny how people ignore common sense and logic sometimes...
