If Apple put all the features you could want in the phone at initial release, they would have no way to stay in the spotlight. They withhold crucial features, and supplement them with niceties that we don't NEED to make up for it.

And then they have a keynote. Where they awe the crowd with the **** they left out in the first place.

...something a Nokia 3210 could do weren't possible till now..

You (as in Royal you) can't cherry pick features. I gave my wifey my iPhone in preparation for Friday. For the next few days I'm carrying an AT&T Tilt. Sure it can copy and paste, but every time I use it I throw up a little bit. I feel like I'm only left with a phone, and a craptastic one at that. Who doesn't love to reboot to make a phone call?

I would be inclined to agree with you except your points are true for everything. Phones, OS, washer/dryers, etc.

Software development is not magic.

Features aren't just pulled out of a hat.

Sure Apple can make a cake. But don't you want that cake to taste good?

I'll admit to this myself, but don't you guys just think that all this hype surrounding the 3.0 release is just for a bunch of features that should have really been on the phone wayyy earlier than now? Things like MMS, Video and Push - stuff which has been on other phones for soo long?

Should Apple really be getting a medal for this one?

Awww, someone call the WAAAmbulance...

The way I always try to look at this situation is that Apple "could" do like a lot of other manufacturers, and ONLY allow the "new" features/software for their new handsets. i.e. iPhone OS 3.0 "could" only be offered for/on the iPhone 3GS, essentially forcing people to buy the new handset to get the new features. Nokia is notorious for this, with their many different "feature packs" for the same version Symbian OS. But, Apple at least makes most of the features/new software to where they can be installed on older handsets (iPhone and iPhone 3G), to at least breathe new life into devices they could just leave by the wayside, if you will. They could say "new features = new device" if they wanted to. I say be happy that they even offer the ability to add these features to the older handsets to start with, even if they do seem "late" compared to most manufacturers.
