Even more folks will be forced to use WhatsApp. Already most people that I communicate with who are on Android seem to prefer WhatsApp over SMS.

So Google wants the new standard, Apple is dragging its feet. But what about the all the other phone OSs being used by billions of people? :D
So the choice will between Google and Facebook?

Which technology would that be? Did I miss the part where they open-sourced iMessage?
They were planning to in the beginning, but did not get a warm reception from companies that encryption hurt their business model. They pivoted and made it a defining feature for Apple products.

Yeah, some stuff got leaked in 2018 or something didn't it, where Apple tried to get carriers etc to update SMS but wasn't successful, and that lead to iMessage being created.

Perhaps you didn't comprehend what I said. I acknoledged the security, but mentioned that G will still have access to the messages, thus no privacy.
The article says once the rollout is complete that messages will be end to end encrypted. Not sure how that means that Google will have access to the messages content. Do you??

For Android users, they choose between Google and Facebook.
For iOS users, they choose between Apple and Facebook.

In the end Facebook wins. Actually they have already won and the game has been long over.

It’s not a standard, it’s a protocol Google advocates, why would you expect Apple to help with making its competitor’s technology a standard? Apple has its own technology that it wants to make an industry standard, Google doesn’t help with any of those, either.

The problem is, Apple's iMessage "standard" isn't being shared for Android users or even Windows users. It's strictly a communications protocol in the "Apple sandbox", and Apple enjoyed leveraging it for years to boost the popularity of its devices. (Everyone else was using plain old SMS.)

I see this as the rest of the industry finally fighting back, really. Apple would be wise to realize the gig is up for them, with iMessage making their devices a superior choice, and just adopt the new standard.

Today from The Sun:
"GOOGLE allegedly admitted to listening to conversations recorded by Google Assistant even without a user's "Hey Google" trigger"

Google is the world's biggest advertiser. The lion's share of its huge revenue comes from gathering as much data on a user as possible to monetize that knowledge of each specific user. The more data it can gather on it the more the revenue. This is public record, it is not a secret.
Gee, what could go wrong with massive incentivizing of gathering as much data on a user as possible.
Apple got caught doing the same thing with Siri so they're not all innocent in this kind of stuff either.

Stupid idea. There's a better way.

(I'm purposely leaving my idea out because I might work on it in the future)
Hmm, just because you might have a better idea certainly doesn't make this one stupid. It's a lot better then the current state of SMS.

I THINK that was sarcasm. But yeah, there's no reason to implement this at LEAST as a fallback.

They (read: "Standards Committees", et al.) 'adopted' USB-C, and--frankly (IANF)--a port with a connector that incorporates a central trace-tab in the spec is a more-than-potential(ly) recipe for disaster.

I'm sure AAPL was supremely butt-head-ish in their stance (read: "our Way, or the highway"), but the 'Lightning' trace-on-the-port-wall is supremely efficacious, and much-more practical.

All that OT aside . . . I (basically) just want to be able to txt with my Androidian Brethren . . . at any time; for any reason.

Whatever it takes.

I knew this was coming.

How do they continue to hurt themselves by ignoring progress like this to silo their own features?

HomePod got dinged for not having an Aux port or allowing Bluetooth connections. Apple Arcade got negative press over Apple not allowing streaming game services even though they have different target audiences. iOS got negative press when RCS was first turned on, now it will just be highlighted further.

I’m sure they have their reasons but regarding two of the 3 I’ve mentioned I their stance makes little sense to me and years later no real benefit was gained from it.

Ah, another they all do it.

Both Google and Apple are for profit companies. Sainthood would be anointed to neither. They'll both do what is in the interest of their revenue streams. Yes, Apple had a worker in a repair store look at private nudies. Yes, Apple had some employees listen in on Siri. So of course that is the exact same thing as huge corporation corporate policy for recording everything you say, whether intentionally, unintentionally or the voice activation accidentally activating. Record every single word assign that to you, match it up with every where you go with your phone, every contact you have, the words you use in texting, everything you type and search for, every pic you have ever had, every site you visit (that has "analytics"script, most do) on and on and on. Google is surveillance capitalism's biggest purveyor. That isn't my opinion, that is a fact not in dispute. Apple isn't on the list.

But hey, they all do it. So forget about that data privacy thing. Yea, sure, keep telling yourselves that.

This is an argument that you and none of the quasi-twitter Android mob cannot win. You can only use post hoc ergo propter hoc and other logical fallacies as well as non sequiturs. Yet what I stated is fact. It is not a secret, not whatsoever, even if you choose not to learn the facts or choose to bury your head in the sand simply because you hate Apple.

Regarding RCS and its security, as was said, this is a protocol designed to replace SMS. While it provides the potential for end-to-end (E2E) encryption, what was left unmentioned in MacRumors' reporting is that support for E2E is optional and is left up to the carriers to adopt separately. They can support RCS without supporting E2E, and so far as I'm aware, that's what they've been doing up to this point (I haven't checked in the last year or two, so my info may be outdated).

Happy Samsung phone user here commenting. I have no doubt that Apple will eventually adopt the standard and in true to Apple form will do it better than everyone else.

How do I hate Apple? All my personal devices are Apple. You know nothing about me lol. What I'm saying is your stuff isn't really private with either. Third party apps on Apple devices have been gathering your data for years until recently being able to block some of that. Maybe it's more private with Apple but total privacy doesn't exist with Apple either. It's not like Google is hiding what they use data for. I don't hate Apple or Google bring on even more competitors. I'm all about choice, competition pushing each other and the best product for me.

I THINK it might have been too, but pretty sure it was laced with a decent amount of truth as well. Since you know, his idea is top secret.

No they didn’t. Siri conversations were recorded and analyzed anonymously, which Apple disclosed if you bothered to pay attention when setting up Siri. It did NOT listen and analyze your conversations BEFORE you said the trigger word. These situations are very different.

Apple would probably adopt it at some point. The first iPhone didn’t send MMS, Jobs believed people would be emailing their pictures instead of texting them.
