Is the A14 faster than the A12x?
We don’t know yet of course but likely not.

A leaked iPhone 12 benchmark tells us that the A14 will be much faster in single core and about on par in multi core workloads compared to the A12Z found in the latest iPad Pro.

So, yeah, the A14 is gonna be faster than the A12X. Graphics performance will be a little bit slower than A12Z, but about on par with A12X.

First of all, that was a rumour, but if true, it would only be faster in single-core, and as you said, not faster for multi-core or metal. It's actually significantly slower than A12Z for metal, and somewhat slower than A12X for metal.

Single core performance usually determines how speedy a machine is in everyday tasks. The A12Z is gonna be on par, at best, only in a specific subset of tasks in heavily multi-threaded applications.
On the A14, most apps will load and run faster and the system overall will feel much snappier.

That's not quite true in my experience. For overall snappiness, it's a combination of both single core and multi-core, but leans toward multi-core these days. The single-core-determines-overall-feel hasn't really been true for many years now IMO.

For example, the A8X iPad Air 2 feels a lot closer in real world usage to the A9 iPad than it does to the A8 iPad mini 4.

For single-core, A8X is about the same as A8, but for multi-core, A8X is about the same as A9.

This is becoming more and more a "too good to be true" rumor with the touch ID button and CPU. I can't recall Apple ever doing this for the Air before.

It'll definitely be a wow from me if the Air drops with A14, but hopefully not long to dwell on. Jon Prosser said the iPads were coming week commencing 7th September.

Three years into the iPhone X era and I still absolutely hate that I first need to unlock and then typically swipe up twice to get to the home screen. Having these action separated into two different buttons at different locations will make this experience just so much worse.
What do refer to exactly with 'need to unlock'? For me, the unlocking happens while I am picking up the phone without me having to do anything.

Or do you dislike that after swiping up, you get to the last used app and not the home screen?

I hope we will be able to use the Logitech folio touch keyboard with this one as well as the iPad Pro 11”

Cool. So, without those pesky bezels everyone is so upset about, where does one put ones fingers when holding a device like this -- you know, without accidentally triggering touch surfaces and all that? I'm genuinely quite curious, because I use the bezels on my iPad Mini all the time for exactly this.

FaceID fails for me a lot, so i frequently need to enter the passcode.

Even if it did work as intended, FaceID unlock lands me on notifications, which is pointless for me.

One swipe goes to the last used app, two to the home screen.

This whole process is so much faster and more reliable for me with TouchID.

(I really wish there was a setting to skip notifications and go straight to the last used app after FaceID unlock.)

Well if this is accurate then Face ID will continue to be a big one because this Touch ID implementation is the worst thing imaginable.

It would be ok if it existed on devices with Face ID as an alternative/backup/2-factor/choice/option. As a standalone option? Puke.

Why do you like terrible user experiences? Or are you that focused on the bezels that you don't realize how much this matters?

Wow, the way you stated your opinion made it almost sound like fact. You confused me there for a second. Almost actually believed that nonsense. 🙃

They need to retire the Air name. It should just be the "iPad". Same for MacBook. Keep it consistent with the iPhone branding and let the "Pro" features and hardware trickle down to the base models every generation. The "Air" moniker has outlived its usefulness.

This makes sense for the MacBook lineup as it currently looks, where there is an entry-level product (Air) and a higher specification product.

Not so much for the iPad, which has three levels, low (iPad), mid (Air) and high (Pro).

I agree that the “Air” moniker should have been put to rest when the 12” MacBook was introduced (which was smaller, lighter and more expensive) but some type of naming convention is needed to distinguish between the three distinct iPad types.

If Apple would introduce a cheaper (than the Air) MacBook option, rebranding “Air” as “better and lighter, but not Pro” I think the naming would make sense again.

I like how FaceID 1st step unlocks my phone so I can read my notifications, like an email, but when I put my phone down the message is hidden from others seeing it. Also it is nice that swiping right on that message takes me straight to my emails since the phone is unlocked.

The only problem I have with a TouchID button on the edge of the unit is that it has far less optimal of an image to work with - instead of a roughly 3/8” circle, it’s going to have a strip that’s, what, 1/8” wide?

Who cares as long as it works well. Technology improves over time. If Apple can make a fingerprint reader that works as well or better than their previous generation reader, with far less data, then that's great.

Apple stuff usually works well. Not everything of course, like the butterfly keyboard. But their track record is good enough that I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.

Nice, will be interesting to see what features distinguish the iPad Pro from this model -

  • Face ID
  • Camera
  • Pencil 2 compatibility
  • Screen size
  • Processor(?)

What else?
Pencil 2 would work with this, if it's USB-C. I don't expect this model to support LIDAR like the Pro does. Certainly the Pro will still have greater storage options. And I wouldn't necessarily expect ProMotion (120Hz refresh) in this one either.

Unless your fingers are getting smaller, there’s still minimum amount of area required in order to achieve the same level of security. I agree that Apple stuff works well most of the time. My distrust isn’t of Apple - I figure they won’t ship it if it isn’t secure, my distrust is of the likelihood of rumors being true for a sensor with such a small surface area.

I do not have lock screen notifications enabled, so after unlocking my phone is just a very expensive and impractical time and date indicator, a job my watch (which is now 43 years old) does much better.

If I could configure it to go directly to the last used app instead I could see the next required turn in maps while walking or continue reading an article while waiting in line without repeatedly needing to take my gloves off in sub-zero weather just to swipe up.

You are aware that the navigation screen is already shown instead of the lock screen when you activate the screen (eg, via raise to wake) during an active navigation?

Does not work with Waze. Anyhow, navigation was just an example, I could think of hundreds of things I’d like to continue viewing without needing to touch the display first.

Well I live in the Caribbean so I can't relate on the sub-zero weather, but Apple should offer more settings for what you just described. Hopefully in future software updates.

Not sure if I missed part of the discussion, but how is that better with TouchID, you still need to touch the front of the device?

That particular part is not better with Touch ID, it is just that Face ID fails to be better than Touch ID when it could be.

Touch ID allows this in a single motion by clicking instead of just touching the button, but Face ID requires a second activity (swipe up) after unlocking to perform the same action.

If it does indeed feature Touch ID on the power button, then the LFT would be a no go. The Magic Keyboard would be the only option.

See, now this is really interesting. I was curious so I just pulled the box down from my shelf for my iPad Mini 5 and took some pictures:

This leak definitely looks legit to me, the subtitles are all in the same places with only slight variations.
You do realize that anyone who was going to fake this would have access to the same information you just referred to?
