But it would just go to home screen the same as the current Touch ID iPads do. Why do you think they would implement this one any differently? I pick up my 1st gen 9.7" Pro, touch the Touch ID and it goes to home screen almost immediately.

iPad Pro and iPhone 11 have faceID. This means that as soon as you pick them up, they unlock without requiring any user action. This means that on those devices, you only need 1 action to get to the home screen (swipe up).
With this new iPad Air, instead, even if you pick it up and the screen turns on, you still need to perform 2 distinct actions to get to the home screen:
