Hope it has Face ID. Just can’t go back to a button to unlock. That would mess with the flow of using my iPhone and iPad Pro.

No it won’t have Face ID. It will have the same touchID as the Air 4

also if true looks like the mini will FINALLY HAVE A CAMERA FLASH ON THE BACK OF THE DEVICE

I am a pilot and only use the iPad mini in portrait. That's how it is mounted on the yoke of the airplane and holds all my charts and geo-referenced approach plates. I put the power port at the top so it can be more easily plugged into the aircraft panel to charge.

How do you feel about this redesign then? Does it still fit your use cases?

I knew it! As I saw the new aluminium mold I always said this will be the final design because it absolutley made sense. Like the design

Happy to see the full sized Apple Pencil for the upcoming mini, but volume buttons on the top will be a weird experience
To be honest I’ve kinda gotten used to it because when you have the iPad aid docked in a keyboard case the volume buttons are on top. This actually means that they’ll be on the side when the mini is similarly docked

That’s a good point, mine is also almost always in landscape/keyboard mode

Nice catch! That would make it the first non-Pro iPad to receive a rear camera flash. Finally. That really needs to be standard.

That sucks, won’t be buying one if that’s the case.

indeed. Maybe Apple can quietly refresh the Air then this year to include a camera flash as well if this ends up being true.

You do realize that it won’t happen for some time. FaceID is expensive AF and secondly the Air 4 doesn’t have FaceID. Why would you think it will have FaceID when the Air which is more expensive than the Mini doesn’t have it 🤔

Speak for yourself. For me, all the iPads I had since the very first one were 95% used in portrait orientation.
Interesting. I don't own an iPad - well, I technically do, but they're "my kids'." They use them almost exclusively in landscape. Occasionally, something like Osmo will require portrait. But the vast majority of time, it's landscape. When I have had iPads in the past (aka: used them more often than I do my kids' iPads), I too used them mostly in landscape orientation as well. Fun part is: everyone can use them exactly how they want. ;)

That said, I'm reminded of all the portrait videos being shot now. While I get that some of the environments in which they are shared are portrait-friendly, if not only) play a role. But every time I see someone shooting video vertically, a part of me dies. Nothing like going to watch a video on (say) a TV and it's this small picture with sides that are just black voids. There is a reason television sets and movie screens are landscape. Because our eyes are side by-side and not stacked. Our field of vision is wider than it is tall. Vert vids are the suck. Get off my lawn (boy)!

I actually prefer this solution, my question is which one will be volume up and which one will be volume down? I’m hoping (and expecting) the one closer to the sleep/wake button is volume up, but you just never know. But that way does make the most sense for whichever way you’re holding it.

The iPad mini in particular is an excellent portrait device because you can actually hold it with one hand in portrait and read it like a book.

Not saying it can't also be used in landscape but I prefer using my ipad mini in portrait.
That makes complete sense when using a Mini. Using 10.5” or larger landscape makes more sense, especially reading where you see two pages side by side.

I wonder what Steve Jobs would have thought about a stylus on the iPad. 🤣
Probably would be all about it since the Apple Pencil is COMPLETELY different from what he was describing during the iPhone launch. First off, the Apple Pencil isn’t required for touching the screen, you can still interact with your fingers, whereas a stylus was the only input method for phones etc at the time. And second, the Apple Pencil is a tool thats used for art and writing, again complimenting the input method of touch. It’s a tablet, not a phone, it’s two completely different conversations trying to say that Steve Jobs‘ comment about a stylus has anything to do with the Apple Pencil.

Absolutely agree. The whole thing is as tiresome as Safari is snappier.

Prudent of them, moving those volume buttons. Maybe the other iPads will get the same treatment going forward - the Pencil gets in their way on the iPad Pro 11.

It's just a teeeeeny bit too close to them. Apart from the general lack of repairability, that's my only gripe about the iPad Pro 11 inch. Otherwise it's perfect.
