I wonder if it will have a bigger screen? Since the 3gs people have deemed the S upgrade on a phone to be only a certain amount of things, like its a written law on what apple will allow. The 3g to 3gs wasnt a minor upgrade, by comparison to todays tech it might be, but back then (i know it hard to remember what tech USE TO BE LIKE) that was A HUGE UPGRADE. It brought about the new age of smartphones. And yes the 4S upgrade wasnt as big, and may be some slick marketting quick at work, but these two examples shouldnt lead anyone to believe that their are rules to be followed on what an upgrade should include! Open your mind !!!

Not sure which one will be more boring.

The actual keynote or the phone.

Was looking through the iPhone 4S keynote...god, there was no excitement at all.

That could have been partly because the people up on the stage had probably been told very soon before that Steve Jobs was close to death or had even visited him. Probably that could have put a dampener on the event. Only takes changes to inflections in the voice to change the mood. I bet the last thing they wanted to do that day was launch the new phone.

The outer design will likely remain the same. Apple is saving too much from economies of scale and not having to repurchase machinery to change that anytime soon. :p

I honestly think their may be something going on that we don't know of yet. It just seems odd that Apple has the iPhone 5 with only a 2 pin connection but this one is showing 10 pins. Like others have said it just seems odd that such a simple button has that many pins.

I/we may be looking too much into this but it really does make me wonder, is there something we are not seeing? What's the change for?

Certainly does seem curious that there are so many connections required for a button that is currently either pressed or not pressed. It may be nothing, but it does seem like a significant change to that component and by implication, a change to the role if the Home button. .

Nottingham must be even duller than I remember, that you bothered to reply to a thread that you find ever so boring.
I am not sure what people expect, the s version of any previous iPhone was just a slight upgrade. It is not going to be very exciting, but for some people it will be enough reason to upgrade as usual.

It's an exciting place; if you found it dull you were probably too busy looking at iPhone parts or replying to coments like mine with drivel. I find posts about people getting excited about phone parts far from boring; it helps me realise I have a life for the moments I sit on the toilet reading this nonsense!

I don't know why this site has attracted a coordinated plague of non-Apple users that don't like Apple. Are the competitors paying people to do this?

Fact of the matter is that I'm looking forward to the iPhone 5S, I have a 64 GB iPhone 4S now, and also have iMac, MacBook Pro, and Apple TV, plus an assortment of iPods.

I really don't care what the competition is doing or offering, I'm not interested in a huge screen, and there's nothing they could do that would tempt me away from Apple. I'm invested in the Apple ecosystem, and the system operates at optimal efficiency with other Apple products.

If your only purpose here is to denigrate Apple products and extoll the "virtues" of the competition, please find another forum. You people are dreadfully BORING!

3GS was a huge hardware bump, but its design was still the same. This was okay since most other phones still had bad designs, and the 3G was atrociously slow (exact same hardware as original with the exception of the 3G radio).

Notably, until the iPhone 4S, Apple kept adding new features that the competitors didn't have. For example:

3GS added the compass, which allowed for better map viewing and augmented reality. Also added autofocus to the camera which, which really improved pictures. Also added voice commands, though that should have been there from day one.

iPhone 4 got the retina display, which would have sold plenty units by itself. But they contined to add a gyroscope, HD video, flash, and a front camera for FaceTime. At the time, I thought this set the bar for apple upgrades. They would have stayed ahead if they kept innovating at that pace.

iPhone 4S... No real features except Siri, but at least it had that. iPhone 5 has no exclusive features unless you count an extra row of icons as a feature. Every software function on the 5 also is available on the 4S -- which is pretty indicative of how lackluster the hardware update it really was.

It's getting stale. iPhone 4 was a huge upgrade; even if the iPhone 5 was the immediate successor, it'd still be more lackluster than the 4 was. Now with the 5S all indications are that Apple will simply make a faster 5. No new features like NFC... Maybe a fingerprint scanner, though that seems doubtful to me. Apple is stale now.

Samsung may have essentially released a galaxy S3s, but it's still so far ahead of the iPhone. I've decided that I'm going to wait to see what Apple does. Unless they really surprise me, I'm going android.

One thing doesn't make sense with the photo of the clamped iPhone 5S home button. Nomarly such button doesn't require a 10-pin socket to be connected to the mother board, for example iPhone 4 uses 3 pins (possible for the two states of a button: pressed and unpressed) and iPhone 5 uses only a 2 pin connection.

Why would they fit a 10-pin connection when only two pins are requred at a minimum?
Great question

----------

A fingerprint reader for this kind of device would just require a very thin rectangular opening for the user to slide their finger. It's not round in shape to be integrated into the Home button.

I would love to know how u know this

You left one very important word out of that quote...... not.
"It does NOT seem apparent"

The original article had a typo and did not have the word not in there. They later edited the article to include the word not. That's why it was confusing for a while.

If you have a corporate Exchange account you're most likely forced to use one. :( I would like nothing better than the option to bypass the "swipe" to open altogether. Just click a button and I'm in.

I'd like that, too. I get my 8-character password wrong about 1 in 5 tries. Fingerprint authentication would be great, as long as it's reliable. My experience with it (a LaCie drive with a fingerprint sensor) was mixed at best.

Even if the 5S is a flop I'm pretty sure that 90% of you will pay hundreds to get this phone and possibly more to get an early upgrade, so stop complaining about the lack of innovation. Maybe if all the fan boys/gals stopped drinking the Apple coolaid we would see some changes in design/software more often. The fans are the reason why Apple is successful, no fans = more drive to be more innovative than the competition.

What do you think would happen if the 5S release was a flop and the 5S actually wasn't sold out in the first 8 hours of online/in store pre ordering? I bet there would be some sleepless nights at Apple.

I can say I'm on the same page as you, with the exception of the last statement. I don't like Apple (I'm only on the 3GS still) as most do, I'm no fan-boy. I do REALLY enjoy iOS though, but moreover I REALLY REALLY love jailbreak. But I do know from experience the differences between Samsung, HTC, and Apple products. I personally have used a galaxy s3 (for about a week), an HTC from a bit later than my 3GS was released, an iPhone 4, 4s and 5, and 3GS. I use my phone for pretty simple things; Email, Surfing a few websites, sometimes d/l a torrent remotely, watching Netflix, Text Messaging, Phone Calls, some App Games, Maps, Twitter, Facebook (rarely), Cydia, Pandora. I set somethings on my phone for travel as well. I Use androidlock xt. I can admit that Google has done some cool things with the Android OS, and I wouldn't have fallen as in love with my iPhone if it wasnt for jailbreaking. but originally I never really knew about JB when i got my phone the Xmas before last. and as far as these features, I consider myself pretty geeky, but i like to live life, Participate in the REAL world more than the digital. I like to Torrent, go on my forums maybe 1 time per day, leave a few posts, read a few articles on New Technology or JB tweaks.

My point after all of that ^^^ is that i don't give a FLYING eff about have of the newest "NEW" features. Like i said I AM WITH YOU on what you said about all these hardware upgrades from the 3G-4 - beyond that I don't live in Star Trek Fantasy land like the 10% of users who want these futuristic features, i don't even know what NFC is for? for transferring files?? yeah having a fingerprint thing would be cool, but again im not so worried about "protection." Yes the possibilities of having our phones stolen exist, but if that happens... I guess i deserved to have it stolen if i forgot where i put it, or left it in a vulnerable spot. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm weird, or i am a black-sheep in this new evolving tech community. And i have a degree in Graphic Design and Advertising. I love Computer Technology, but i guess the Desktop Reality is 100% different than the Mobile Reality in terms of what is considered important..

I like apple for 2 reasons with the phones, Vertical Integration and Build Quality/Materials. No other company compares. I have held the S3, and I'm pretty certain the S4 is about the same. Its good, but apple is better. Replacing the battery is easier, but the avg Lit Ion battery will last 2 years. I will either try to replace the internal one via a Service that fixes iPhone's(a reputable company) or just have to buy a new one. Some say iOS is outdated, and it is a bit. But these simple things just wont make me stray from the 2 reasons i gave for liking them. IF Samsung was able to do these 2 SIMPLE things as well, then HELL YEAH I WOULD SWITCH. but they aren't yet. So Ill stick with the 2 most important factors from a phone or system I like.

I also have an iPad 4 and love it for what it is, and love using for Tablet activities, but again i just DONT KNOW how it could be better, unless i had all sorts of BT accesories, and it could run windows/apple PROGRAMs like a real PHOTOSHOP version, even if it was a version 5.0.

I agree that the update to iphone 5 was rather underwhelming in terms of features (when compared to previous updates). However, I suspect that was because of the new slimmer, lighter design. That WAS a major technological leap forward. It just wasn't one that inspired me to upgrade from my two year old 4.

I love the idea of a fingerprint sensor on my iPhone. The extra security will make iPhones more acceptable to those who work with sensitive / secure data. It will also make iphones less attractive to thieves.

I hope that the 5S will provide more useful new features. For example a camera that can take good quality images inside (when rooms are lit using energy saving light bulbs). I would also like 128GB option so I can carry more music and video with me.

Not that would ever purchase or not purchase a phone based on a home button, but..... Seriously the iPhone home button sucks. I owned three different iPhone models and the home button was DOA for one, and soon wore out on the other two. Hope they make on that can stand up for at least a full year.

Oh lord Jesus you said that like you actually know what you're talking about, unfortunately you don't. First, the front and the back of my iPhone is glass. NFC can transmit 6 inches, possibly more. Even if my phone where metal it would have little to no effect on NFC transmitting through the phone. We NFC requesters don't want a "cover" we want it integrated and it is possible with very little overhead.

Sure buddy

Here comes the kicker!

So it will pass through several millimetres of stainless steel.

Thanks for the research, having used NFC before on other devices. Even as far back as 2002, I took apart my phone when I was living in Korea and put the NFC chip from my subway card. I love that we can have a more active card built into the phone that we could turn on and off and to transmit what credit card or membership card we wish when we want.

I imagine roxxette's remarks were based on ignorance and the fact that he/she just isn't interested in the technology. (until Apple releases it, then will think it's the bee's knees.)

LOL weird that i spent most of my time in the alternative to iOS forums  maybe you are only interested in trouble making ?

When i see a complete metal phone with nfc working i will agree to the "let me google guys like you" :) seems weird to me the htc one nfc ship is placed around plastic parts and not in a random place surrounded with metal

No trouble making here. I stated it would work, you gave ridiculous replies to me.

Don't forget, the front of the phone is glass, it could pass through that easy, and the metal on the back is thin, compared to what it could pass through. If anyone here is causing trouble it's you. Look back at you snarky replies, based off what Android handsets are doing?

It wont work !!! Find a damm nfc phone and put a metal back cover ! Nothing happends ! Try that myself with a nexus.

Now your talking about the glass/screen  yeah good luck.

Trouble maker..... Sorry that your used to apple fan club and just go in attack mode lol never even say if it was a good or a bad thing yet the guy allready claims im fan boy and starts the attack  trouble maker.

First comment: OMG NO FINGERPRINT SENSORZ?! NO BUY

Comment of the Day/Week/Year

I agree that the update to iphone 5 was rather underwhelming in terms of features (when compared to previous updates).

I think it was because of two reasons:

1) Everything was leaked about the iPhone 5, no surprises.
2) iOS 6 was shown off in June but wasn't released until September
