512 GB pure solid-state in a 7mm-thick iPhone, it's amazing how far we've come. Very much overkill for me though.

Apple is not known to be generous with base model products, especially when it comes to storage. Don't count on it.

True however it would be nice if they give their flagship 10 year anniversary phone a bump in storage specially if it demands a hefty premium over the 8 or 8+
 
At first reading of the thread title I was all like
"Damn! thats a lotta gee bees!"

I'll go for a 256GB model, currently have a 128GB 7+ with about 8GB free

I wouldn't say that. I have 588 songs, 131 videos, 3197 pictures, 141 apps (including a few games), and still have 11.8GB free on my 64 GB phone. I think a lot of people can get by with less than that.
