I’m in the minority, but I’m holding onto my XS Max. I utilize 3D Touch for text correction constantly and prefer it heavily to the Haptic Touch method. Not that this rumor is true, but no front camera = no purchase. That would be a dagger.

I’ll probably replace my battery sometime in the next year and hold onto this phone for at least another two years. My Max has aged better than any other phone I’ve had before it.

but somehow these schematics contradict themselves.....ok in both smaller notch, in both slimmer bezels...but in one, they talk about larger antenna cuts and here is the same slim cuts

no front camera means no facetime, no selfies and no faceID....it will lose a lot of customers..
It means no FaceTime and selfies. Face ID is a different camera. He stated that he never uses ft or takes selfies. I’m in that demo too. Never use FaceTime and never take selfies.

The notch is essentially "the curse of Jony Ives". Someone now with authority over there has got to say "enough with this s%%t" and come out with a reasonable looking display (as opposed to ridiculous).
They really painted themselves into a corner with the notch - will be interesting over the years watching them trying to backtrack away from it

Where would you have put the sensors and cameras?

I rarely use FaceTime and never take selfies, but I do find the front camera handy when I use my phone as a mirror to see behind desks and computers for cable tracing or jack # reading.

I am terribly disappointed though in the rounded corners that seem a hold over from the X instead of using a tighter radius that more closely resembles the 5s. The larger corner is fine on the iPad but loses too many pixels on the iPhone.

It´s only me or the smaller it is the uglier it becomes?

You're the only one. The least distracting notch is v-notch at edge.

no notch > v-notch > pin-hole > u-notch (because it resembles a peepee) > narrow notch > wide notch (think of balding)

Unfair comparison since you’re comparing iPhones to competing brand phones. It’s hard to focus on the notch only when there are differences in bezel size, screen size, addition of a chin, and OS UI elements. The other two phones don’t match the iPhone’s design excellence so it’s a tainted experiment at best. Once we have the iPhone 11 next to the 12, then we can see for sure.

Where would you have put the sensors and cameras?

Exactly.

People always say "Apple should remove the notch"

Sure... but where will all the stuff inside the notch go? There's actually a lot of hardware there! Should Apple have just made a bezel that goes across the entire top of the phone instead? But bezels are bad, remember? :p

Another popular comment is "I can't wait for under-screen cameras and sensors"

It might come as a surprise to those people that screens are solid.

The few attempts to put cameras "under the screen" are half-baked. Look at this image below of a supposed under-screen camera. There actually is a cutout in the screen for the camera... with a bunch of low-res pixels on top. Sure it looks like the screen extends over the camera... but it really doesn't.

The truth is... the screen is solid... and they just made a hole. Then they covered the hole with a smattering of loose pixels. It's NOT a camera that shoots through the screen.

Asking for a camera that shoots through a solid screen is like asking for a DSLR that shoots through a lens cap!

A iPhone without a front camera would be handy. I just want a pocket iPad, never once used FaceTime or took a selfie.
You're in the minority of people. Especially during a time where everyone is using video chat to keep in touch with family and friends.

That is indeed a nice notch. Shame about the chin.

I tried an iPhone XR but the notch bothered me. I thought I'd get used to it like seemingly everyone in the online community says, but I couldn't. I dislike it when viewing photos and videos, but more than that was how much I disliked not being able to see whether my VPN, alarm, etc. were on. I switched to an iPhone 8 Plus and I'm going to stay with it until I can get more information in the status bar.

I have a feeling I'll be waiting a couple more years until the under the screen camera technology is developed more.

A pretty limited demographic I would guess.

I completely agree with you. At the same time I would buy a phone like without any reservation. I don't even know if my iPhone 8 Plus's front facing camera works. I've never used it.

Talking about a phone without a front camera is like discovering a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Never going to happen from Apple for phones sold to the public.(maybe some top secret stash of phones or something doesn’t have them)

Especially during these times FaceTime is the most important app on the phone for at least us.

That’s ridiculous. Nobody cares about the notch except some whiners and trolls. They sell these things by the millions. And people love what the notch gave them - faceID.

for the vast majority of people on the planet it’s a total non issue. Your comment is complete hyperbole.

Couldn't agree more, the speaker can be located in the top bezel and losing the front-facing camera is a good trade-off for better screen design.

The Ultrasonic fingerprint will be a good stop-gap for biometric authentication on the iPhone 12 before Apple can understand how to integrate the camera sensor under the screen.

How are people enjoying their FaceID technology in the masked corona virus era?

Until then, they’ll milk “removing” the notch for all its worth...1 millimeter at a time, for the next ~3 years.
Yeah no. “Milking”, as if there’s some benefit to prolonging removal, and they wouldn’t get rid of it now if they could 🙄

Smaller notch this year, smaller again in maybe 2023 when they can figure out how to make sensors even smaller, or at least lower profile. Maybe it’s gone by 2025/26 or maybe another shrink, and complete removal in 2028 or so.

It sure would be nice if there were magic, but there isn’t... just magical thinking. It is what it’s is; affordable technology has various constraints. If you prefer the approach taken by other manufacturers, reward them by buying their phone 🤷‍♂️ Problem solved.

Can’t wait to replace my X with this, as long as it’s not 64Gb is base config.
So a $50 upgrade to 128GB would be a dealbreaker? That’s where you draw the line. Ok 🤷‍♂️

Nah. What is ugly on these Android phones above is the THICK chin, inconsistent with the bezels.
These below represent how it should look and it looks pretty good to me. (renders from EverythingApplePro)

Hard pass. Waiting for no notch. Might consider the SE now.

Agreed, Apple can sell an external device like lightning to camera module which will be a good idea for people who want to use it for facetime calls until Apple can know how to integrate the camera under the screen.
