doubling down on secrecy, lol pathetic

I don't think Apple cares much about these leaks, or they know there's no way to keep a secret that thousands of people already know.

The "secrecy" they're protecting is what surrounds what they're working on next. That's a much easier task. Where are all the leaks about "Project X-22"? They've managed to keep that one under wraps.

How long has it been since we got a juicy Apple iTV rumor?

While you're yukking it up about these leaks of a product we all know is coming soon, Apple could secretly sneak up behind you and double down on the backside of your head with their next big thing. You'll never see it coming.

It looks nice, but if they are going through the troble of making everyone get new cables I'd rather they switch to a standard like micro usb.

Unless their new cables provide more functionality than the micro usb standard, or more convenience, such as being able to plug the cable in either way.

If these cables don't have features that make them superior to micro USB, then they should have gone with micro USB.

...but I'm expecting more.

Because MicroUSB has a limited number of pinouts.

Apple uses these "connectors" to act as independent channels for direct video out, audio out, device control, etc.

In the 30 pin, there were S-video, component, L&R discreet audio channels, firewire, etc. Each of which needed their own pins.

I am assuming the new connector will have HDMI out, L&R Audio and device control at least... lots of the old connectors are no longer needed.

Why would it have HDMI or any video out? You need to jailbreak your phone to have it do video out anyway.

As long as the new design brings some new features, I'll be ok with it. For example, I'd love to see thunderbolt support, and the magsafe idea tossed around by some intrigues me. But if this change is just for the sake of a new look, then I'm not going to be happy. I'm not thrilled about the prospect of all my accessories suddenly being incompatible with the new iPhone, but I'm hopeful that adapters will be available.

The saying is "doubling down on secrecy"

Why do you guys keep getting this wrong? LOL

I believe Tim was really talking about providing their secrecy staff more food.

Little out of touch, are we? Video out has been supported a long time, and video mirroring is supported from the iPad or iPhone 4S via the HDMI adaptor, introduced last year, IIRC.

From the glance, it looks to be much more usable than micro USB to my eyes which can be pain in the neck to insert and always feel a bit fragile when inserted to a device.

After I saw the (supposedly) new pins, it just hit me that Apple had to put the audio output on the bottom if they wanted to provide a converter for the older 30 pin cables since this probably won't have analog audio output.

While there are only 8+1 pins on this alleged new dock connector, people are forgetting that the headphone jack has been moved to the bottom... next to the new dock connector. There's a reason for that: There are multiple additional data lanes in the headphone jack. Analogue video (VGA) in addition to separate L/R audio, mic input and playback/volume controls.

The 30 pins will all find new homes in this arrangement so any accessories needing those pins relocated to the headphone jack can have a dock that plugs in to both the new connector and the headphone jack at the bottom.

Oh, no question about it, but maybe Tim shouldn't open up his mouth and say “We’re going to double down on secrecy on products.”

This could all be a fake. Maybe Tim Cook supplied these iPhone parts that aren't the real thing. I think this fall the whole world will be like  and android fanboys will come crying home to their mommies saying "Android is done :(".

doubling up on security is not necessarily, NO "LEAKS" AT ALL, maybe these leaks coming from Apple itself, Why not to give one of the unsuccessful iPhone models, and you can steer people any other direction.

I bet if they were building their products in the US, there would be less leaks. I don't expect that to happen ever though. But it is a dream of mine...

it happens ever year tho..

A new iPhone is only happens but once a year, it is a special occasion.

Tell that to the millions of developers and users. I laugh at that.

You're kidding right? You can mirror an entire iPhone on a screen by buying some video out cables from Apple (HDMI)..No jailbreak required on my 4S

If it can go in either way, and it has a chipset on it, then it could also be a 17 pin connector - 8 each side and the body as ground. The chipset could switch the connection depending on the orientation automatically. I think its Thunderbolt and USB compatible with MagSafe since there is no compression / friction point you can see on the male side. Although admittedly there could be a friction point could be on the inside of the phone...

^^^ This.
Even if the plug is single sided but could go both ways then the socket is at least 17 pins with some sort of auto switching. They love magnets so they could have a small magnet in the tip have the port switch configuration before the pins make contact. or Multiple magnets like the Magnet Barcode patent app made public a week or so ago. different accessory types could have different magCodes.

They could make USB 3 cables single sided 9 pins and reserve the 8 "back" pins for device out function to accessories.

So, can we expect a USB 3.0 connection or a Thunderbolt one?
I'd love to connect my iPhone 5 via Thunderbolt and have almost instant backups and syncs.

It will be interesting to see if Apple uses high speed flash storage in their new devices. Especially if they are Thunder Bolt compatible.

Well, it sure as hell isn't a Samsung cable.
Check again next week, they'll have something similar.

Steve wouldn't have allowed the damn speaker grilles unmatched, either. I seriously dislike that, personally. OCD, i guess.
Ever looked at the top of the iPhone 4/4s?
wouldn't that wear down over time? with the plastic near the metal pins like that? kinda like the nike fuelband?
No more or less than every other connector I've ever seen.
But the term comes from "doubling down" in Blackjack. It's come to mean either betting more, or investing more on some idea/project/whatever.

Doubling down is still the right term. Even here, doubling down on security is a risk, since you might not get your money's worth out of the extra time/money/effort.
But "doubling up" is also used as slang, meaning doubling the number of sales or security personnel for some event, for instance. Which really sounds more appropriate to this quote. I'd say Tim isn't good at colloquialisms.

Jon Ive is still alive - he's the designer and not Steve or Tim. Also people keep forgetting that it has been said a million times that Steve left product lines worth 5+ years behind so this phone may as well be Steve's idea to begin with.

Surely it would make more sense for an 8 (or 9) pin connector to have 4 pins on either side, rather than having 16 pins all up?

There is something about this connector that just doesn't sit right with me. I'm not saying it's not what they will use, but if it is then I don't think it's the final version.
