That'd look cool, sure. But it'd be uncomfortable as hell to use. The Mini is small enough you can hold it from the bottom or wrap your fingers around it from behind without any issues. But the bigger iPad is (obviously) both larger and heavier. You have to hold it from the sides to get the best grip. If it didn't have a bezel, you wouldn't have a place to rest the edge of your palm when holding it in portrait.

The iPad's display will recognize if you have your hand or fingers on the screen and will not impair it when you take a second hand or finger to flick or gesture.

This makes no sense to me. Why release an updated iPad mini in the fall if a new one will be coming out in early 2014? Unless Apple is moving to 6 month product cycles?

Bad on Apple if they move to 6 month product cycles. That's just too soon. No one wants an outdated iPad only 6 months after launch.

Meh. I really want to buy a Mini because of the smaller form factor over my iPad 3, but I'm not wasting my money until the thing has a retina screen. Not going backwards.

Guess I'll just be using this thing for a while longer.

Hopefully

Has Apple fixed a problem with "errant" touches along the edges of the device? With the current gen iPod Touch, I have a constant problem where my big thumbs are partially touching the edge, which prevents proper use of touch on the device. I have to hold the iPod Touch on its thin edge "properly" to use the device properly.

I don't understand how this is not an easily fixed issue, to simply ignore touch along the edges of the device or at least understand the difference between a touch that might be involved in "holding" the device vs intentional touch along the edges.

Come on Apple, unless you have implemented this in iOS 7, I don't really want a device with no bezel where I can't use it properly unless I hold it in one specific way. This is a basic usability issue.

If the Mini is updated to be thinner faster lighter with perhaps less bezel, I would upgrade. Last year I was almost burned by the iPad 3rd gen (I bought it and sold it a few months later for a $50 loss), which received the Retina but was orphaned in 6 months by a better iPad. Makes me wonder if a 3rd generation Mini will receive the same treatment so I'll wait on upgrading because of Retina until that's just right.

This report makes no sense. A tablet is not a monitor or TV. A decent size bezel is needed to hold the device else the user is likely to accidentally hit a button or web link. That's just bad design and only leads to consumer frustration. So I don't believe the story. It's no like the mini has an enormous bezel as-is.

Wasn't there some talk a while back of a software driven virtual bezel where there was a full screen but touching the edges would not activate anything? I could see this happening and all sorts of virtual enabled buttons that one could toggle off or on? I could see endless possibilities here if so IMHO.

Decisions decisions

I have a 4th gen iPod Touch that's due for replacement. It's fine but it's starting to balk at newer software plus I want more real estate for games and to write on. I've tried both the full sized iPad and the Mini and keep going back and fourth

The mini is more portable
The full has a better screen
The mini is easier to hold and type on
The full is easier to type on with both hands
The mini has plenty of power for what I need
The full has the next gen A series chip so is better future-proofed.
A retina mini would tip the scales in it's direction.
No retina mini plus a narrower/lighter full would tip the scales in the other.

This is a tough call. Nearly 100% chance I'll put my money down and then have second thoughts.

First World Problems.

I think that was my idea I have posted a couple of times on these forums and I think would be a winner.

Take the screen right out the the very edge of the unit, then, if needed you could display a bezel on screen and ignore any inputs from the "virtual bezel" area.

Then of course, your bezel could be in any color you like :)

If I may help in your decision. I would go with how often you upgrade your products to determine whether future proof really matters. If you plan on taking your device with you a lot and can deal with the screen res. I'd say buy the specced up mini when it comes out. If it's mostly a couch device then get the ipad 5.

"Still not until 2014"

2013 is turning out more like an "all talk, no action, nothing truly new released" year... muddied with valuable time being spent on legal attacks and other questionable minutiae.

Although I'm certain Apple is not as rudderless as they appear to be, if not for the massive revenue streams flowing in from existing products I'd bet they would have delivered a new iPhone at the least. And while this year is far from over, the first half has certainly been a bust.

All this talk of a plethora of future products is getting awfully repetitive and losing more credibility as every day ticks off.

I think the iPad Mini's current style is excellent. They should just hold of their next iteration until the 7.9 higher resolution screens are available in my opinion

At the moment it seems that the iPad highlights the weak point of the iPad Mini, and the iPad Mini highlights the weak point of the iPad.

Once they release a retina iPad Mini, and a slightly smaller, lighter iPad, which has the same finish with the chamfering and metal buttons on the iPad Mini, they're going to be great products.

How about Apple just make the iPad a screen, with a simulated bezel and home button when it senses a hand and swiping, and non bezel at all when it senses a movie being played or presentation or note taking, etc.

Really hoping the mini or the ipad 5 doesnt turn into what the imac was (delayed shipping for like 2 months). Blows my mind how they dont have stock for these devices its like they didnt know years ago they were going to need more...

I'm sure apple realizes the potential problem u point out. So if they did release a "near bezeless" iPad, that problem would be addressed.

Well, I think Apple would suggest this. Buy the iPad 5, enjoy it for a few months. Next year, get the retina iPad mini and do one of the following:

1) Keep using the iPad 5 as your "couch device" and your new retina iPad mini as your "cafe device", something that compliments your iPhone on the go (at the cafe, on the train/plane, on vacation/holiday, etc)

2) Trade in your iPad 5.

3) Give your iPad 5 to a family member, perhaps with sharing benefits ;)

That's what I'm considering. Definitely First World Problems.

I don't care about thinness, lightness, or bezel size. I would like a user replaceable battery and SD card slot.

I'll be holding onto my iPad 3 until the iPad Mini Retina comes out whenever that ends up being. I'm fine with later rather than sooner. I need to save my allowance up for it anyway .
