Personally I don't need or want any sort of mini iPad. My current iPad 4 is mainly a couch device at home. Outside I'm satisfied with iPhone 5.

As my next iPad I'd actually rather buy a 12" version (Apple can leave the 2048x1536 resolution, PPI will still be very good). Why couldn't Apple have 3 sizes? 8", 10" and 12" (all 3 with the same 2048-by-1536 resolution, not to complicate apps).
12" Not going to happen.

If Apple made the big and mini iPad with the same specs bar screen size and charged the same price for both it would rid the whole cannibalization issue and just give people the straight choice of either bigger screen or portability.

Personally I would still buy the iPad mini because i want portability over screen size.

I am itching to buy a mini even more if they make it bazeless, but the absence of retina is too much to overlook, when reading text and watching HD movies, documentaries etc it plays a huge part. I might buy a five this year, than get a mini when retina becomes available next year.

Apple did not forget that too much variety in the lineup once nearly killed the company. You start with 8", 10" and 12" and soon you'll look into 6" and 14" as complement and - BOOM - you're about to lose focus.

I'd rather have them doing the few offered sizes right instead of catering to all potential (size) niches.

Now with software it's a little different imho - they should offer some sort sof skinning for both OSX and iOS and let the user switch. Does not even come close to logistical challenges and cost associated with hardware variety...

Oh please no... I want higher resolution for iPad mini!

Just give it to me and I just give you the money, okay? :p

not really sure lighter and thinner is neccesary. will probably look really cool though.

Thinner and lighter is always better. Go look at the first iPod, the first iPhone, the first iMac... I feel the same way looking at the iPhone 4 versus the 5 and can't wait to see how much further they can take it. Everything looks like a fat pig after you have spent time with the latest iteration of that device.

I think the bezel on the current mini is fine, I'd have to hold a bezeless model before passing judgement. I'm happy with my Current mini till retina comes out

OF COURSE THEY ARE DOING THIS!

1. Apple leak features, one reason why they are 4 years behind.
2. This is to suck the money out of people, they buy the first one, then because the second one has minimal bezel they buy that, then the third has retina so they buy that, 4th has a quad core and then, they turned what SHOULD have only been 600$ (australia price), into $2400.
3. Yeah, Apple always use this minimal bezel, but I don't think they know what it is, have a look at phones with on screen nav bar, THAT is minimal bezel.

When I bought the mini knowing it would be replaced when retina came out I bought a 32gb, I really want a larger sized 4g, so when Retina comes out that's what I will replace it with.

Waste of money to buy this w/out the retina. My 1st gen black is a fine design.

The iPad mini confused me enough despite the fact that it doesn't have a Retina display. It was to my knowledge that the iPad mini was to target the e-reader-esque market; those who wish to consume digital material. Yet the current display on the iPad mini does nothing to compliment this fact. My eyes would explode if I had to read a newspaper or magazine on that display.

From a technical perspective, why can't there be a retina mini?

The iPhone 4S had retina (October 2011)
The iPad 3 had retina (March 2012)

Seems like the mini 2 should have it!

Is there a TECHNICAL reason for the delay? (as opposed to a sourcing or financial reason?) Probably not.

But I'm guessing they want to avoid the iPad 3 debacle, where a (what people come to believe as an underpowered) retina model comes out, and then a "proper" retina model comes out shortly thereafter.

I think the reasoning is strategic.

So, the 2014 retina rumors seem valid to this casual observer.

it would have to still be a bezel there of some sort, otherwise you'd get smudges on the screen. Besides, it also a place where to put fat fingers.
