I don't think you have to worry about the next generation, unless they release it in August. The terms of the upgrade program say that you need to make 12 payments before you're eligible, nothing about a true calendar year. So in theory, as long as you get a new one in September you should be fine if the next iPhone is released in Sept/Oct.

I stayed up to place order through upgrade plan, but you did not get the choice of having it mailed to you. The only color choice at the three stores in my state in the 7+ was rose gold. I wanted a black one. I made a reservation, but now thinking of cancelling because I am not thrilled about color.

Same boat here.

I live an hour from Nashville, and I couldn't find anything but Rose Gold anywhere in the eastern half of the country.

What I did was use the "upgrade another line" option and it let me re-enter my phone number and essentially start a new iPhone Upgrade plan and I've got a new phone being shipped Sept. 23-27. Would've been the 16th, but I kept getting errors. When it gets here, I'll activate it and just return the other phone to cancel out the program.

Keep trying -- I've noticed that stores around St Louis originally not showing any reservations are now showing reservations and they have inventory. Some kind of strange delay.

I was on when the site opened:

We’re not taking any more reservations to upgrade your iPhone right now.
Reservations will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on September 17. Please come back then to make a reservation.

Most likely we will not be able to get the next generation on release day because of this. I know..first world problems, but....
No issue here as far as the system allowing me to make a reservation, in fact it allowed me to do it twice for two different phones that were both on the upgrade program and used two different Apple IDs. My only gripe was the complete lack of ANY jet black iPhone 7 Plus at ANY Apple Store in the entire state of Florida (and it's looking like anywhere across the country judging by this forum).

Got two reservations in for pickup at 8am on 9/16: Black (not jet) 256GB iPhone 7 Plus and a Gold 256GB iPhone 7. It's also worth noting the system allowed me to choose ANY carrier, so I chose Verizon for both and I hope that come pickup day I'm allowed to stick with what I chose despite having a T-Mobile account as I need the CDMA modem when we go on vacation in Brazil.

No problems here. I was 100% Logged in to my Account on my iPad Pro and reserved my 7 Plus 128GB Matte Black

My speculation is Apple gives preference to accounts logged in on Apple devices if your on a PC or Mac you don't get bumped to the front of the line.
Nope. I was logged in on my iPad Pro and iPhone and did manage to get a 256 Rose Gold, no black anywhere in my state a couple of minutes after Apple Store went live. It went just as fast on my Mac, just chose the app to complete the purchase.

It was hit and miss for me. I was able to make it work but not in the way I fully wanted.

I upgraded "my" phone by making a reservation in store for a silver 128GB 7+, which is my wife's phone of choice. I then started a new upgrade program account and had a Black 128 GB 7+ shipped to me, set to arrive on 9/16. When that arrives I'll stick my sim in it, and then later that day I'll go to the Apple Store, trade in my 6s+ on the existing upgrade program, get the 128 GB 7+, and put my wife's sim in that one.

Hopefully it all works lol. It's convoluted. I wish they'd open up family ordering through the upgrade program. The way they have it set up is crappy for consumers.
