Underpowered for what? A machine is only underpowered if its not able to do the tasks you ask it to, or if it does them too slowly. Just because it doesnt have the highest specs doesnt make a machine "underpowered". If you bought a white macbook in the first place then you aren't using it for anything that would max it out anyway.

Make a decision and go for it.

Well, if I had the money I obviously would have gone with the 15" i7. But that's way out of reach.
And the machine does most things I want to do now. But, in a year from now, I don't know if I'm going to be able to say the same.

I chose the White Macbook Unibody for the way it looks. Have you seen this thing? It's sexy. I was planing on upgrading the ram and hard drive but based on the scratches I already have, I am now re-considering maybe going Aluminum.

i don't see why people go "oh no my macbook has some scratches on it", my old ibook was trash, the bottom case didn't clip on properly, the frame as cracked, the lid was srached, i could go on but, it worked so i didn't care

I have both, the aluminum and white. The white does scratch, but the aluminum does as well. I actually bought my white one so that my aluminum didnt get beat up at work, because it shows scratches and stuff worse than the white does.

These machines will be more than adequate even 2-3 years from now. My aluminum MB runs circles around my co-workers machines, even those with "superior" specs. All I've done to it is added RAM and HD space, and its the slower 2.0GHz C2D.

Because thats what buying a mac USED to be about, a machine that worked no matter what. You used to buy a mac because you needed one. Right now its trendy, and the focus has shifted from "function" to a lot more "form".

I have just became accustom to Apple providing high quality products. Don't get me wrong- they still do- just this white polycarbonate should NOT be scratched with LESS than normal use in 2 days. It's been about 4 days now and I don't really see any other scratches. I'm starting to wonder if someone used my computer when I wasn't home and was wearing a watch or something.

And about the white vs. aluminum for scratches...

I've used both now (my sister has a last gen 13 mbp) and I have never felt worried about scratching that.
Right when I got this out of the box, I treated it like gold.
I still love the look of the white but I may return/switch to aluminum.

Hey guys.
I just got back from the Apple Store and I am currently writing this on my new 13" Macbook Pro.

I really appreciate all of your help with me choosing!
I'm not going to jump to conclusions like I did with the Macbook but...this one seems like a keeper.

Which version did you go with? Updated or previous generation?

I am actually contemplating selling my macbooks and going with a new MBP 13". There is a good deal around here on the previous gens, but that extra battery life, RAM and better GPU makes it hard to go that route.

I got the new "updated" latest gen 13" mbp. The battery life is really great so far. Much better than the White Macbook Unibody (which I thought was great, too.) My guess is that the White Macbook and the last-gen mbp's use the same battery as they both claimed 7 hours. The new battery is great.

The computer is overall much more speedy than the macbook. Whether thats due to the extra ram (which macbook owners can add) or the better gpu (which they cant't add), I'm not sure. But I like it.

The thing I miss most about the White Macbook is the rubber bottom. I know that a lot of people don't like it as it may get dirty easily but it made it stay put on a desk. The mbp's will slide if you just try to close the screen and the 4 rubber stoppers don't do too much.
The backlit keyboard is a huge plus on the mpb. I've never had one before but now since I do, I won't be going back to non-backlit.

The RAM helps a lot. I have an extra 2GB in my aluminum MB and its quite a bit faster than my white one. Well and the 7200RPM HD helps too, which would be installed on the pro if I get it.

Actually, my white MB is selling this morning, tomorrow I am going to pick up my MBP, and my current aluminum MB becomes my spare machine, until my wife yells that I have too many computers again lol.

So it comes to this? Apple's products can sometimes be otherwise so near to perfection that we must complain about micro-scratches?

It's no wonder they're trying so desperately to machine the perfect laptop, any less and they get their arses chewed out!

Um, what?

If Apple can't make a *perfect* laptop, then they shouldn't charge premium for it. Simple as that. And no laptop is perfect. The scratches were only PART of the reason I changed to the Aluminum mbp. The other reasons were the spec changes. This computer is much faster and fits my needs much better than the Macbook (base models). I love the look of the Macbook White Unibody but (edit) A (/edit) cluster of scratches, even if they are light, should not have happened within 48 hours. Why does it bother you so much that I wasn't 100% satisfied with my purchase of a Macbook? I wanted other users advice on what I should. My choice was to either keep it and let it scratch more. Keep it and get a case and cover up everything I liked about the Macbook White. or Return it and pay the difference for the mbp.

I chose the last option. No big deal.

apple charge a premium because the computer and os are made to work with each other, not because of how they look new macs just look like pc's anyway

Mine had tiny sratches right out of the box

Hi,i bought my white macbook 4 days ago at the apple store,as soon as i took it out of the box i noticed tiny micro scratches all over it,this must of happened just during the packaging process,i had a friend that said hers had small scratches on hers too right out of the box,it actually drives me nuts, but i cannot afford the extra $200 right now for the mbp,i am disabled and just recently got out of the hospital after fighting a life threatening infection, while i was in the hospital my house was broken into,i had my 15" macbook pro 2.53ghz which was only 6 months old stolen,a tv,my daughters laptop and several other things were too,so here i was sitting without a computer,i barely scraped up enough to get the macbook, and i too love the sleek white look of it,i put a custom colored skin on the top and on the palm rest and a clear skin on the bottom, and am going to pick up a keyboard protector, hopefully everything will keep it from getting anymore scratches,i mean granted they are tiny and you can only see them when you turn it towards the light, but still when you get something brand new for that kind of money you don't want scratches. One day when i have more money i'll get the mbp but for now this is all i can afford,i just pray it won't scratch anymore or it will probably drive me crazy!:D

I don't think thats 100% true. Actually, I don't think it's true at all.
If Apple made 'ugly' computer then only the professionals that need osx would get them. I love osx and the look of my computer equally. Once one is gone, I don't care for it anymore.

And, I don't tink the new macs looks like pc's

Explain further?

See! I am not crazy. Thanks for posting! I hope everything is well for you!
Like I said before, the computer is great and very nice looking. I didn't have any cases/protectors on mine (which I don't think should be a necessity if you want your computer to look nice past day 1) but I'm sure yours will look great with all the protection you put on it.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I really enjoy hearing the different points of views. :p

I still haven't decided what I'm gonna do.
I will keep you guys updated, though!
Anymore advice is appreciated!

Although I love the 13" White Macbook, I'd consider taking it back and bumping yourself up to a 13" MBP. Especially as the new models are out.

when i say they look like pc's i mean they look more like pc's than most of the mac's i have (g3 - g4) and i don't think they are ugly i love the look of both the white and aluminium macbooks i just think they look more like pc's than some older macs

I have the new white mac unibody, it has scratches on it. But they dont bother me because well it's a laptop, not a diamond. So it has a few scratches, just live life....my best advice, even better, just enjoy your laptop, :D

Yea we know it's a laptop and not a diamond, but for a thousand dollars you shouldn't expect something to come out of the package with scratches already on it.Apple really needs to find another material besides the high shine polycarbonate body, all you have to do is sneeze at it and it scratches,i don't remember the previous polycarbonate macbook scratching so much,it must have something to do with the high gloss shine they put on it.Either way it scratches way to easily!

just saying, some plastics look as if they have lodes of tiny scratches in circles in citron light even if they don't, seen this on loads of cd's
