Why is it whenever this stuff is brought up, everyone conveniently forgets that the Mac has had non App Store apps since day 1, and the world never imploded?

This shilling for the mega corps is getting old guys. Choice is good.

Also, it’s optional. You can ignore it entirely if you want

They are usually upset about no longer having the choice to have no choice.

One thing I would love to see in iOS 27.x versions is that in the App Store app, you see tabs for up to four different app stores with four others available by swapping in and out of the tabs. That way, you can Apple's own App Store, Altstore, Amazon's own App Store and even Epic Games' own app store visible.

That sounds awfully user friendly.
Not sure we can do that Sacto

Not sure this is anything that matters in any way. But it will be great for grifters, cons, apps that steal info, apps that don't work as promised and there's no way to get your money back. I mean, if you don't like your local electronic store there is always a shady guy in a van outside the roller rink who has computers too! And so much freedom, right? What's funny is - these stores will all pop up, and then go away. Probably taking a bunch of money they stole. Have fun!
You realize that we dont have this problems on a massive scale on macs, yeah? what makes you think something that’s still far more locked down will?

AltStore PAL offers several other apps created by independent developers, some of which have functionality that's not allowed in the standard App Store.

Like tracking your location 24 hours.

Good luck.
You are already being tracked on your iPhone. Macrumors is collecting a bunch of data on you.

Good to know about this. Expecting other such stores to open in other countries due to various regulations in different countries.

As you say, it's optional, so don't know why people get so het up about it. If you don't want to use it, then don't.

I didn't download anything from the Mac App Store until about c.2012...and everything before that was either by disk, USB-stick, or download.

I didn't have the choice when I started on Mac/Apple hardware, and everything had to be installed from 5.25/3.5" floppy discs. Don't think anyone could actually buy anything from an app store in 1988's System 6, or 1991's System 7, or 1997's MacOS8, etc.?

This, same. Hell, my *macrumors account* predates the existence of the mac app store

Do Walmart have links to the Amazon store or directions Sam’s Club in their stores?

I've bought printer ink from walmart, in store, that had labeled on the back that it was quicker and cheaper to buy it online directly from them.

Bought a Harry's razor from Target, and the packaging heavily promotes ordering from them directly.

I agree with @Art Mark, having these other stores on a phone is silly.
And, consider the development and support for these features that few use. There’s always finite dev resources and there’s a non-zero amount expended to support App Stores, alternate browser engines, etc. which means other areas don’t get the attention they should get.

Imagine being forced to create a framework of API’s for alternate browser support, having to have automated tests created and tested for every new beta and release and having to continuously validate that the feature still works… when NO one is using it. This is good money going nowhere indefinitely thanks to the EU.

I dunno. I’m not really losing sleep about the security of my Mac.
I mean, it basically sits there in one place in a known configuration, I wouldn’t be concerned either. 🙂 I’m guessing your Mac doesn’t come across as many unknown bluetooth devices or network configurations as any iPhone. And, it’s much less likely to be stolen.

So, yeah, the Mac is less secure and the folks with Macs are ok with that.

Because no one ever takes their laptop anywhere with them…?
