Was it ever said there would be a screen under the trackpad? All we ever heard was "glass", I thought. What if there isn't anything under it?

So what would be the point of it? If you can't see anything through the "glass", why not keep the existing trackpad?

Um...So pro users can have more options (toys), and entry level can stay near the $1000 mark? Why change what has always worked?

They are not going to be that much different now with the new models. Drop the "Pro" name now Apple!

And MacBooks are not toys.

What do you mean, "always"? They've made Macs for 24 years and used the "Pro" moniker for two years. They sold plenty before they started calling them "Pro" and they'll sell plenty after they drop it...

Do you see LED-display and graphics cards different than Intel Integrated Graphics on the new MacBook?
LED displays, yes, Non-integrated graphics, no. Might be Nvidia onboard graphics, if the rumours of the MacBooks going to Nvidia motherboards are true. But integrated/onboard graphics nonetheless.

So Pro Sports are corny? I think the word Pro means Professional therefore not "Amateur"...

The MacBook Pro is not that much more "professional" than the MacBook (especially will be true in the new models).

Just accept the "Pro" name drop already. It is not going to affect any thing that much. I think it is actually going to simplify everything when "Pro" name is dropped.

woo hoo! I can't wait to see the new MacBook and pros. It is always great when Apple updates their designs to keep them ahead of the game. I am sure the new one will be very funky and everyone will hbe to get one.

I am not trying to troll, I just want to know where you get this concrete evidence that the pro lines will be dropped? Last I check 1/3 of the Mac line is designated "Pro"?

They won't drop the Pro name. There will be a distinction in the name Pure common sense. It seems logical to make it one line, but people who spend that kind of money for a Pro probably want there to be a distinction. Humans are like that. Apple marketing and Jobs knows this. Why drop something that has worked and worked well?

Of course this is only my opinion. I laugh when people say things like it is a fact. I could be 100% wrong. Wouldn't be the first time or last time.

You need to have some sort of differentiation. And, speaking from sales experience. No one will buy a $2799 Macbook. They will, however buy a $2799+ doller PRO laptop.

And yeah- it HAS always worked. Why mess with it?

Yeah. The only problem is that the big ol' desktop is called Mac Pro. If they drop "Pro" from that, it'll be just "Mac", and it doesn't get more non-descript than that. "I just bought a Mac". "Oh, you mean the Mac Mac, or just a Mac?"

Great argument, but...
You didn't actually say why Pro should be dropped. ;)

I don't know how you can say that. The pro models have;

1) Faster CPUs
2) Backlit keyboards
3) Larger and higher resolution displays
4) Much faster and more powerful discrete GPU
5) More connectivity and can mirror or drive 30" ACDs
6) Larger and faster HDD options
and probably a few other things as well.

Just because they will supposedly be using Aluminum cases for both does not make the MBP any less superior to the MB. Function-wise the MBP is far superior. Fashion-wise they are equivalent.

iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 worked and none of them had "Pro" in their name?

Why are you people always so afraid?

You cant compare it like that.

iBook is a simple name. Powerbook has a differentiation. It is a higher end computer.

What you people are suggesting is that there is a 3000 dollar Macbook on the market. That won't go over well.

Ooh, I hope they keep the optical drive. Burning disks on a MBP is slow enough as it is. Having to do it over USB would be horrible.

If I wanted a slim laptop, I'd get a MBA. Considering I have a Pro, I obviously don't care about thickness, and I don't see why it should have to get any thinner.

And I use both my FW800 and FW400 ports at once. I simply can't afford to lose FW400.

Plus, isn't the FW800 port thicker than the FW400 one?

Still, does not make the MacBook Pro that much better except #4. With the new models, I think you can call the 13" MacBook: "13" MacBook Pro" if you want to, thus making your arguments moot.
Just when Apple releases the new Macs, see them for yourselves.
I am done with this thread.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it is far superior. I have had both and I don't think it is far superior. That is where I agree with kabunaru to a certain point.

I agree with both. Considering Bluray isn't picking up very quickly, dropping an optical drive wouldn't be a good idea.

And yes, I personally don't care about the thickness. I would rather see it drop a few pounds and stay as "fat" as it is.

Why not? They bought $3500 PowerBooks. There were no Macs called "Pro" before 2006, and MBPs are no more professional than the G4 PowerBooks were. If you're a professional, you'll buy the stuff that fits your needs no matter what it's called. If you buy stuff only because it says "Pro" on it, you're probably an amateur.
