the plastic keys are starting to wear off because of the oil from your fingers. Pretty much all plastic keyboards suffer this but it is more noticeable on your laptop because the keys are black. If I view the keys on my classic mbp at a certain angle, I can also see that keys that are used a lot have that "shiny" look you are talking about.

This is rubbish!
I've had 4 classic MBPs and now a unibody one. There's no doubt that the material quality of the new black keys is FAR inferior compared to the classic silver ones. On my classic MBPs there was no sign of use whatsoever after 6 months (before i bought the next one) of tough use. On the new one, the keys started to wear of after only two weeks! Especially the lefthand Apple key which I use very often (because of all the shortcuts).

And no, it's not grease or oil on the keys, they are simply being polished, smoothed down by my fingertips!

I find this very disappointing! I used to sell my MBPs after 6 months in mint condition for a reasonable price. It will be a lot harder to sell my now 6 months old MBP with keys as shiny as the glossy display.

Perhaps...at least they'll match. Why don't you people get the keyboard covers then!?!? Look on the bright side...if enough people are effected by this phenomena then apple might compensate you eventually, like they are doing for the first generation nano owners who complained their pods scratched to easily.

I brought a early refurbish MBP and My mate brought Unibody MBP in NOv08.

if we compare both machines , the keyboard is the key area where early08 MBP keys look better than unibody

Well I don't know about you, but my classic mbp keys (especially the a,s,d,f,i,o,u,e and spacebar) show significant signs of wear; almost as if they have been polished. This is pretty normal for plastic keys even on pc laptops.

I use a zcover keyboard condom to prevent this sort of thing. I found it a little strange at first but now I don''t want to type without it. It makes the keys feel much sturdier. I actually bought one for my new 17" which will ship on the 19th of Feb (hopefully).

This is disheartening to hear. I bought a clear iSkin and I love it. It gives the keyboard a more tactile feel. Just out of curiosity have any of you called or wrote to apple regarding this? I take care of my laptops like new cars and hope to be able to get decent resell. Jenny

None of my 4 classic MBPs showed signs of wear after 6 months. Can't tell anything about longer periods of use as I sold them after 6 months of use. But until then, they looked like new. No signs of use on any key whatsoever.
Maybe it's the silver coating, maybe it's the plastic itself, but there was some factor which made the silver keys much more durable.

When the SR mbp was introduced, the keys looked different to me. My friend has one and it seems like the keys were sprayed with a "matte clearcoat" to protect the keys themselves. You can see this on roughly used units whose coating is worn away and gets shiny much faster than the older keys whose plastic gets shiny.

i´ve only had my unibody macbook pro for about a month and my keys are really starting to get shiny...has anyone else started to notice this?? it´s starting to get very anoying since i dont like to use covers or anything. im not very special about these kinds of things but if it looks like this with only one month´s use...i can imagine how it will look in 6 months...and then 12.

If the shininess bothers you, you can always by a iSkin for it, thus protecting the keys from everyday where and tear. On the down side, it doesn't fee 'great'.

They also come in clear with black key's!!

Very upset with my keyboard

I just spent 2500 on a macbook pro aluminum and within weeks my keyboard appears to be 1 year old with glossy spots.... i keep clean and do not have oily hands or eat at my computer... its simply the wear caused by my fingers...

Im going to call up apple tom and see what they have to say
This is absolutely ********

Anyone know where the moshi clearguard is sold in canada, more specifically toronto

or any sites.... i looked at amazon but with the shipping costs it comes out to 78 dollars which is rather pricey for a 25 dollar item.

now i have to ruin the look of my macbook pro with a fkn keyboard cover

anyone know if keyboards can be replaced in the future and if so at what cost approx.

thanks

I disagree with people saying that all keyboards do this. My Early 2008 MBP's keyboard still looks pretty new. Even looking at it from an angle it is looks like it did when I bought it. I've had it since 9/14/08. Then again I usually try to have my hands clean before touching the MBP since it is my first notebook, so I want to keep it as nice as possible. I do think that the unibody MBP's keys are probably more likely to become shiny. I've felt and looked at it, and it is the type of plastic that just shines more easily.

yes my post is in reference to the new aluminum unibody macbook pro

the keyboard quality is absolutely disgusting

it has a nice feel and look, but once the wear begins it ruins the entire look of the computer.

And this is my first computer, I do everything in my power to keep it in pristine condition and my hands are always clean when using it.....

i want it replaced

still looking for the moshi clearguard in toronto anyone know where ican grab one?
