Will I literally start crying when/if an update comes, or should I be fine aslong as I'm not trying to cut Avatar II on my sparetime?
You have by no means been an idiot. As at least one earlier poster has already told you, it's always a sensible decision is to buy what you need when you need it. Because there is absolutely no way to know when Apple will update the MBP lineup, claiming that an update is "imminent" is the height of foolishness, it seems to me, even if those who predict it happen to guess right. After all, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Such reasoning is just a handy excuse not to buy what you need when you need it. Remember, computers are just tools. Thus, if your new MBP does the job you want it to do, you made a good choice. Period, paragraph, end of report.

More so for not making this decision/commitment before spending the money. Yes you bought an outdated product at a premium price, but anytime someone comes on here and asks someone else to make the decision for them makes me shake my head. It's one thing to ask for technical advice and another for someone to make a life decision for you.

depends on what you paid for it.

I'd say it depends on what you paid for it. If you paid full price you might not get all the bang for your buck, considering the laptops do need an update. But if you got if for less than the retail price I'd be sweet. I just received my new 17" MBP today (latest model). It was already about $300 bucks less on ebay and with bing cashback (thanks Microsoft) I got it at about $2,005!!! Of course when you buy something on ebay you risk getting screwed over, but the guy seemed reputable so I went for it.

Is that a great deal or what?? When/If I decide to sell this baby I might not even lose money.. :D

Actually, he made the decision already and was asking for opinions.
Kind of silly, true. But at this point he has a reversible decision, so it isn't a lot different than asking a purchase opinion. If we eliminated that kind of post around here, things would be pretty quite.

The purchase of a notebook computer is not on my list of "life decisions", so that bothers me not.

It's one thing to ask for technical advice and another for someone to make a life decision for you.

I agree that the OP's question was perfectly reasonable. I don't think it was "silly," however, because it provided a forum for a lot of good information and interesting opinions.

Sounds like you are talking yourself in/out (perspective) of it already. That should tell you something and most likely it's that you should have waited.

Chalk more wins up for the mothersh:apple: as yet another impatient soul tells them it's ok to **ck us this long by plunking down hard earned dollars on Apples currently old offerings. Hey you'll love your new MBP for a bit there is no denying it. But listen to yourself you already KNOW that when the new one's come out and we are all talking about our our {insert next gen MBP label here} C2D killers you'll regret not waiting a bit longer and that you spent alllllllll that money on inferior tech. Seeing as you had the balls to come right out and ask there is my come right out 2 cents worth. I truly believe most people who are buying now and not waiting, deep deep down inside there psyche know what I'm describing is going to happen to them as well. If you "need it buy it" common sense applies of course.

According to that chart, the Arrandale 2.53 beats or ties the 9900 in every test except that cinebench thing. Lower is better on the pi calculations, and the i5 is higher than the C2D in almost everything else...

Yeah, the positioning there seems off, or I'm missing something..

You are basically making a wager that the new models won't come out in mid-april. It might be a good gamble, and might be not.

On the one hand you got a great machine, but on the other hand you are paying apple regular price for older technology which they are getting for much cheaper now.

On a sidenote Apple must be making a boatload of money on the current lineup of machines their prices don't go down, but they are using the same components; which I am sure they have been buying for much cheaper for a while now. No wonder those bastards have all that cash in reserve. If I didnt know any better I would say this is why they are holding back the updates, to squeeze every last ounce of profit from these current machines lol.

great for stockholders, bad for users

unfortunately (fortunately?), I am both

Two questions to those who say apple gives their customers a return right of 2 weeks:

Is this a valid option for all countries? (I am from Norway)

When should I start counting days? From the day I ordered or from the day I receive the MBP?

Reason I am asking this is because I expect to receive my MBP in the next couple of days, and if a release is due the next two weeks, I need to know whether I should be ready to swap or not.

Cheers!

No, local consumer laws and regulations vary. Check with your local store to see what return policies exist. Here in the US its 14 days, but other locales it can be longer or shorter (probably longer in most cases)

When you take possession of the computer

If it comes down to looking at a chart, it might not matter that much. There are only a couple kinds of tasks people run on computers: 'instant' tasks and those that take a while. My experience has typically been that the performance upgrades that matter the most are the upgrades that make more things 'instant'. (And that's usually as much about software as it is hardware.)

Put another way, I just went from a 1.6GHz Pentium M to this shiny new 2.53GHz MBP. The new machine is easily three or four times faster than the old one, and the vast majority of the time, it's totally irrelevant. This is true more often than we tend to admit in this industry, which is why it's key to understand why, exactly, you need the level of performance you're paying/waiting for. To the OP... if your machine does what you want/need, then don't worry about it. They're good machines, the OS and build are both unique to Apple, and Apple's prices aren't terribly out of line if you look at the thing holistically, rather than as a percentage game.

My two cents...

(Edit: If you really do want to continue to worry about the new MBP's, worry about the other new things they might include other than the CPU... ie: better wireless networking, better displays, better keyboards, etc.)

People told me at Christmas to wait.

People were wrong.

My Christmas 17" has been a joy for 3 and 1/2 months now while the waiters just keep making new threads about how great the i7 will be. I am sure that one day it will. This is great today and will be so next year too.

I have seen people saying wait one more week since January...

I bought my MBP in early October and people were telling me to WAIT THEN!!!

I have had 7 months of amazing computing and guess what? its still just as fast!

oh wait its now much faster since I got the intel ssd! OP - enjoy!
yes faster, better are coming but I always think you have to go with what you need.

I upgraded my ibook to last gen MBP when the LED screens came out. Upgraded that to (sig) for the high res screen and amazing battery.

I really would like to upgrade again but in reality this does all I need. My main limitations are it now being a laptop vs desktop and 4GB ram.

Will I literally start crying when/if an update comes, or should I be fine aslong as I'm not trying to cut Avatar II on my sparetime?

How can anyone know the answer to that question?

As a general point, be comfortable with any decisions you make in life. Ingratiating oneself to other fallible humans or deities is something to avoid.

No, you're not idiot for ordering that... but you just wasted a lot of money. Right now is not worth buying an Apple laptop at the advertised priced.
Facts are facts, and those are that the technology that you bought is very cheap now plus the process of manufacturing it has been lowered (because it is not a new process like it was when unibody technology was presented...)

But... it's ok as long as you enjoy it :) If you're just one of those who want the latest of the latest from Apple, then yes... you would be an idiot ;) because you couldn't wait (till June), but if you just need an Apple laptop for whatever reason, I guess your needs were more important than increasing the profit of Apple.
