Am I being too picky?

Well I was in desperate need of a portable computer this week, and I did not have couple hours to drive&comeback to the nearest MacStore 
Is there like a "grace" period? where I get to have it replaced in some amount of day?
But seeing as the nearest MacStore is rather far away from me, I figured I'll just live with one dead pixel. The gap was fixed by the method recommended:
"slightly bending the top lid" and now the top and the bottom lid closes perfectly.
That brings up another question, however ^^
I haven't purchased AppleCare yet. Is that really necessary? With the student discount, I can get them for 250 (If I remember correctly), but that is a hefty price for an 'extended warranty' in my opinion.

*ps* After playing with the iTouch for 2 days now, my desire for a iPhone grew too big...though I'm on Verizon so there's no way for me to get the iPhone until the contract is over.. Why'd Verizon have to decline Apple's offer!!

Why'd Verizon have to decline Apple's offer!! 
It is normally 14 days. Check your receipt, there should be a return date or some sort of condition printed on it.
Take it back and get a new one b/c of the dead pixel in the center of the screen. The sooner you take it back after you purchased it the more willing they are to swap it out. The screen alignment thing is pretty common on the mbps so I would just live with that.
In the past I bought an ibook, had a dead pixel on the screen, took it right back, and they gave me a new one. But I'd take it back sooner rather than later.

Wait, since it's still under warranty, shouldn't he get it anyway, even if it were after 14 days?
I would definitely get a replacement, though.
I would bring it back to see what they can do.
I know my MBP has the aluminum is bulging out just above the monitor release. I brought it in and asked them to replace it, and they did not.
