Interesting theoretical explanations from many of you, but they don‘t change the fact that ALL Apple Watches after one year sell for approx. 50% of their original price on ebay etc. So yes, the resale value of the SS watches is kinda crappy, but no, it is not more crappy than the resale value of the Alu watches.

Of course the 50% you lose on the SS watches is more $ than 50% you lose on the Alu watches ... so if you upgrade to the new model every year, it may still make sense to go with the Alu watch.
thats exactly why i don't opt for the SS version simply its less $$ lost, i find the alum and regular glass works just fine for my use so no need for sapphire and stainless steel.

My wife and I did not get an attractive offer from Apple when we looked at trading in our AW 3 GPS. I can't remember how much it was but it was so low that we just gave our watches to family/relatives when we upgraded to the AW 5 GPS. We'll be doing the same thing for these when we update again I assume.

I would have a heck of a time justifying a SS AW even though I've always wanted one.

Yeah, it’s hard to sell any watch. If you look at it on a % basis it doesn’t matter which level you buy. A GPS Series 4 that sold for $429 new is selling at almost 50% of that used.

Buying a SS watch is like buying a premium car. Those who do it are more interested in things other than resale.

This is how it has always been for all devices Including phones. The resale price floor is set by the base model. same has been true in the car market as well forever.
I wouldn't think that this applies to all devices.

Macs hold their value on the used market pretty well and is not usually set by the base model, especially if there are certain upgrades, such as GPU. Some upgrades do not always hold in value though.

Good luck finding a year old used iMac in good condition @ 50%.

As for cars, I wouldn't say that this applies either, unless you re talking about wholesale markets. Although, I guess this might depend on the model.

I think that the Apple Watch would be similar to iPhones though, maybe not as dramatic of a price loss, but similar.

The ‘premium car analogy you used is appropriate. As an example, if you’re somebody that is new to the Apple Watch and you purchase the sport model, you wouldn’t really look to upgrade to the stainless, because you probably wouldn’t appreciate the subtleties for something like the sapphire and 316 L stainless.

But for somebody that is already a stainless owner, it would be harder to downgrade to the aluminum, because Of the experience with the sapphire and the substantiality of the stainless casing.

Look at it like this, it’s kind of like if somebody was in a vehicle that has leather seats, heated/cooled everything, but then downgrades to a car that has cloth seats that doesn’t have any type of luxury features, it would take away from the experience.

it’s not that you get nothing for the upgrades, it’s that the return for the base product might be 50%, but the upgrades may only return 20, 30, 40% compared to their original cost.

I think if you upgrade every year maybe the aluminium option is best...the difference in resale from aluminium and SS is basically the same...maybe £50 difference

I just love the look of the SS though
