Welp, most of the time it's not a full-on puke, but more of a hitch. ;)

For instance, if you travel to http://www.vw.com/ and try to click on any of the active menus with Safari, it goes nowhere (I mean the "VW Models" "VW Etc" "VW the company" menus). Firefox doesn't have this problem. I know it VW's crappy website, but I keep Firefox on board for just those instances.

that vw site works fine for me running safari...

I don't see a difference between the way it works with either browser.
Really? When you mouse over those menus I mentioned, they should expand down...then when you try and click on one of the options, it just doesn't do anything.

VW site also works fine for me using safari.
I only use Firefox on the windows PCs downstairs. On my iBook I use Safari (only once has Internet Explorer ever been used on here).

nosen, are you using the Panther version of Safari or the Jaguar version? I notice a lot of incompatibilities with the Jaguar version, and virtually none with the Panther version.

Nosen, I get the same thing with Safari on the VW site -- everything works fine *except for the pulldown menus*, which all try to target "#" on the current page when you click on the selections, so they do nothing. But everthing else works.

This is what I think he's talking about:

Do these pull-downs really work for everyone else? I'm using Safari 1.2.4, 125.11, from the 10.3.6 upgrade.

I used to use Safari all the time, but since I'm on Jaguar it means it chokes on sites a lot. Then I flip-flopped between Firefox and Camino for a few months, since both offer almost 100% compatibility for me, however, Camino's lack of features and Firefox's non-nativeness kept me endlessly swapping 'till I tried OmniWeb, which, in the 5.1 betas, gives me all the features I want and nice compatibility, plus 'tis a true Mac app! Yaay!

Make sure you're over the text before you click. I can see that the link outline doesn't cover the entire menu rectangle, only the text.

Odd, but the site works perfectly on my Safari. But point taken. My self-service portal on Powerschool (owned by Apple but farmed out to another company!) does not work under Safari. Also, the "TV" shows at espn.com won't work properly under S. Firefox is pretty fast, everything works I have been to (besides the sites with some WIN only plugins), and it's just a matter of time I get rid of Safari unless they fix a lot in 1.3.

That is exactly what I get, on both my Macs, always. And I have the same build numbers as you. Really weird that it works for others.

Oh well, I'll still be able to sleep tonight. ;)

I take that back! I just got it to work...by not clicking on the text but actually clicking elsewhere in the box (about 10 times :)). When I click on the text (in the box) it just puts a # at the end of the URL. Oh well, bad example I guess! :)

i'm a safari user, i tried firefox but it was using up a lot more memory than safari, about 10-20 meg per page i had open.

besides that i like the look of safari better and functionally the only difference that pertained to me was in firefox the close tab button is just one way to the right, and on safari there is one on each tab which i like.

camino i like and if anyone can tell me how to get rid of the status bar on the bottom, or if its not possible i would be extremely happy

thanks

I used Internet Exploder to renew my driver's licence because nothing else was compatible.

Did you complain?
Do you want your government only supporting a bug riddled, waiting to be infected, monopolistic .. Browser !

I'm sticking with Safari. I can sync all my browser stuff through .mac so I don't have to Export and Import favorites when I put a new link on my desktop or laptop.

As for the PCs at work, most people are switching to Firefox. Man is it great being a Network Administrator.

If you realised how backward this state is, you wouldn't have to ask the question. They make MS look like over-achievers.

You beat me to it...I'm still trying to comprehend that I moved into a state that has capital punishment....I feel like I'm in a time machine. :(

Anyway, erm, *feels bad about off-topic diatribe*

I know the argument gets ping-ponged back and forth, but if firefox and safari and others really want to push IE into the grave, unfortunately, doesn't it seem like they will have to deviate from standards a little bit and support some of this non-standard stuff that's been built up around IE, to make sites more usable?

It's important for those of us using websites to remind the webmasters that their sites are non-compliant with the W3C validation and real standards, if they adhere to Internet Exploder. The good thing is that people tired of exploits, viruses, and security holes are fed up and moving away from it. Webmasters (and various web database access vendors) may finally realise that choosing the sloppiest code does not mean that it will work for everyone.

i've been using firefox. i changed because safari used to not load pages. i think the problem has been fixed now but i'm used to firefox so why change?
once tiger comes out, if safari is great then i might change back, or if i start to get problems with firefox.

Yes, it works for me that way too -- clicking off to the side of the text. There's still something not-quite-right about that....

Firefox v IE v Safari

the winner is....IE for me. Safari would have won, but right clicking in the window doesn't give me the option to move forward or backwards in my browser. Firefox takes too long to launch, and this morning, it wouldn't even launch at all.

The menus drop down fine, it's when you have to actually click a link in the menu that it's a little quirky.
