Only on stainless steel and ceramic.
Sorry, should have added more context. The quote I quoted was a response to what features LTE versus non-LTE has. You are correct that is only on stainless steel and ceramic cases.

You don’t need to activate the cellular. You don’t need to pay or buy a plan for it. What you will get it more features in the casing and also the ability to dial 999/911 etc

Or does 999 not work in the uk on an inactivated watch? I thought I read any device capable of phoning must be able to dial 999/911 even without a plan.

I know in the US, they have to be able to make the 911 call, it's the law. I don't know about European laws though.

I think the red dot looks good. I'm definitely in the minority here, I know. It compliments/works well with the dark bands I have.

I will be getting a cellular Series 4 (I'm even thinking of going SS this time around instead of aluminum :) ) but have no intention of activating the cellular. I want the additional battery life though!

The red dot? I really don't like it.

It's not the only reason, clearly. I don't feel strongly that I need cellular, and I'm not ecstatic about the monthly cost (EE essentially lied to me and convinced me to go for a more expensive data plan saying I could share it with a watch, but that isn't the case) but I'm going to be upgrading from my S0 to a S4 on release and part of me says I should go for the fully capable version. I just wish it didn't have the dot, which I find really distracting on the design.

I agree with you and passed on the current generation watch. I'm not sure this was the only reason I didn't buy this time around, but it contributed.

The red dot was also a very un-Apple-like element, in that it's the type of thing Jony Ive has complained about in the past (i.e., swooshy design on old PC cases to denote speed). My guess is that this was driven by marketing and that the designers will win out with the next iteration.

It seems for the most part, the red dot clamor has subsided. Its really a _non_ issue, its just preference. The fact is, once the watch is on your wrist, you can’t even see it. Most who were complaining about the red dot on Macrumors, actually have grown to ignore it altogether. I wouldn’t allow the red dot to stray me from enjoying the simplicity and technology the Watch has to offer.

Frankly it’s not. Your comparison is miles off.

It’s akin to Canon changing lens body color from black to white for L lens. Nobody made an it an issue then, or now. Not even “it doesn’t match my black camera body!”. And Apple doesn’t even change color of the whole body of LTE watch.
I’m not sure if it’s a generation issue or tech people just always needs pseudo outrages (“look at that ugly texture on Notes!”) or something else but it’s just ... boring.

If they had to put something on there to differentiate the LTE models, I think having a white Apple logo would have been nice.
I agree something like this would have been nicer, but Apple would have never let it fly given that the logo would not always be upright - from a design and esthetics point of view.

To be honest, I think that would be kind of tacky to have a ‘white’ Apple logo on the digital crown. Perhaps if the Apple logo was carved or etched into the Digital Crown without any color added, that would be a little bit more sophisticated and blend in nicely. But I’m also perfectly content with/without the red Digital Crown.

The red dot.... is really a non issue I don't notice it on my LTE Series 3 when wearing it. I do notice it on other people but that doesn't bother me.

Many people don't see the need for LTE on a watch, but if you are into any kind of water sport you will appreciate it. Swimming, surfing, fishing, kayaking etc. are all activities where bringing your iPhone was a bad idea. It really is nice being able to get that text, phone call, notification etc while at the beach, in the pool, or on the lake. It also is nice to just go out for a jog or walk the dog without having to bring your phone with you.

An LTE watch effectively serves as a backup phone as well. Misplaced or forgotten phone, dead phone battery etc. are more manageble when you have an auxiliary device like an LTE Apple Watch.

FWIW....I had a black dot on my SS Series 2. I never saw it if the watch was on my wrist. I would have never seen the red one.
I’ll be getting a Series 4 SS and I’m waiting to see what the onboard storage is. ( Series 3 cellular gave you more and that is the sole reason I would have gone with cellular in an S3 had I bought one...I wouldn’t have activated it)
I will be going SS again with the most storage available and unless there is a specific reason for me not to, (which at this point remains to be seen) I will be going down to 38mm. The 42mm was fine, but I find I prefer the 38mm. I just happen to dislike large watches, so the smaller the better for me. No concern over the small loss of display area. Never had a problem with the S2 42 display. Don’t anticipate being unhappy going to a 38 regarding display, but will love the reduced overall size.

I’ve never understood the concern over the dot. If I had found it too offensive I’d have simply removed it.
I have no fears around restoring the face of the crown after getting it off, but that’s just me.

I just was not going to pay T-Mobile more for service when I just wanted to finance a watch. I still have a first gen. It's not even paired up with my 7 Plus since I got a new 7+ after the botched battery replacement.

The red dot did look awful and I hope Apple drop it going forward. You can buy stickers to go over them though so if I owned a series 3 complete with dot I’d cover it easily. It shouldn’t put anyone off buying it due to easy workarounds.

I really did not like the red dot when it was released, but in use, it is fine. I would be more worried about the usefulness of LTE on a watch. In my experience it has been one of the most overhyped and ultimately underwhelming features of any device I have owned. All it does is help you realize how weak LTE signal and coverage actually is. I live on the edge of a large town (700,000 people), and the watch *might* pick up LTE outside of my house. It certainly will not work in most buildings. I have canceled the cell service on it because one, I found I actually don't leave my house without my phone nor desire to (although I thought I would), and two, when I have been without a phone I more often see the no connection notification than the 4 LTE dots.

This is my second Apple Watch, my original was the stainless with saphire crystal, I bought the three with cellular and stainless for that same reason, I am very hard on watches, I’ve hit concrete, rocks etc and never scratched the crystal, I don’t use the cellular feature but bought this because of the additional memory in the watch.

Honestly, I stopped noticing the red dot not long after I got it. And I never notice it on other ppl's watches either. And people who don't have an AW don't really care. It's like when people were all concerned about how the AirPods looked funny when they came out and early adopters were self-conscious to wear them. After about a month, so many people had them and became a common sight that it was no longer a thing that stood out.

If the "look" of the red dot is what's keeping you from getting the LTE version then you probably don't need it at all.

I cannot believe what am I reading.

You are a conscious human being with a free will, freedom of choice and therefore, an opinion. Whether you want a watch or not, that is to be respected, because it is your choice. Not wanting something doesn't make you stupid, nor does anyone have a right to call you so, just because you do not want it.

What is wrong with this world?

I'm also anti-red dot. And I've loved the "premium" look of the black dot on the SS models since the S0.

It feels too much like Apple adding a feature solely for users to show off that they have a newer model. At that point, why not add red dots to MacBooks, or any other product that looks identical year-to-year? I'd much rather see them solve this with subtle changes to the design, hopefully integrating new features.
