The iPod touch isn't really important to Apple. The iPod touch is sort of like the step child of the family. The iPhone is more important to Apple, not some product catered to the teenage market.

According to this breakdown of the most recent Apple financial results, 11.6 million iPod Touches were sold in the last three months of 2011 - - that makes approximately 40 million iPod Touches sold in 2011 - a pretty good chunk of sales for "some product catered to the teenage market".

They did update the price, it went from 229$ for the 8GB to 199$ for the 8GB.

Also, what planet are you on? The 4th Generation supports iOS 5. In fact, based on Apple's cycle, support for the 4th generation won't be dropped until halfway into iOS 6 (and based on how well they're supporting the 3GS, maybe not even until halfway into iOS 7!) Which apps are broken? I haven't seen any that fail to function properly on the 4th generation iPod touch not counting apps broken from the start or apps designed to be used by the iPhone (e.g. Navigation, etc.).

I'm sorry, I didn't realize an 8GB SD Card or USB key was an MP3 player, digital camera, internet communicator device that plays HD videos and runs a full fledged non-limited smartphone OS. Yeah, GREAT comparison. /scarcasm

Also, take the number of iPod touches activated and used. Compare that to the number of other PMP that offer the same features (like the Galaxy Player). Compare the cost. Oh look, the iPod touch is cheaper and more popular!

In my opinion, the iPod touch is perfect. I would expect the next revision to offer a boosted camera (maybe a 3MP - 5MP), upgraded to match the iPhone 4S (since the iPhone 5/6/4SR/whatever-the-hell-you-wanna-number-it-idgaf will also be releasing along side) and MAYBE a 128GB capacity relacing the 64GB as the largest size, and bumping the whole product line down (32 becomes 249, 64 becomes 349, and the 128 becomes 429). Then it would be set for another two years.

If anything, I would rather the shuffle + classic to be updated.

So, like the Macbook Air, I think the iPod Touch is a perfect solution to have all the capabilities of the iPhone 4 except 3G or Phone.

BUT, and I'm going to tell it all, I know that since Steve Jobs death Apple do not care about customers or innovations anymore since there enough stupid people not just to buy their product, but not to complain.

For exemple, the iPod Touch has been upgraded at all, I'm not only talking about hardware but also about memory capacity AND the ****in PRICE in 2 years !

Even though Apple had the decency to at least upgrade the memory capacity or to cut the price when didn't plan on updating their devices, with the iPod Touch is the first time that Apple doesn't even bother. Do they really sell a lot of iPod Touch? Do people really pay 200 euros for 8GB of memory and a hundred more for 16GB?

It will not be two years until September/October so edit your title. The Touch is a mature product so it is on an every other year upgrade schedule.

If you don't like the product, don't buy it.

The big problem is, the app store doesn't hold previous versions of apps that work with the earlier iOS's, so the device continually loses apps over time, as devs upgrade them to work with iOS5+.

I have an 32GB 3rd Gen here, bought in 2009, two years ago for my SO. The firmware updates stopped at iOS 4 a year later. Six of the 20 apps I had used on it previously will install today. Soon it'll be a paperweight. ...a shame considering the hardware works & is good as new.

The 32GB iPod touch 3rd generation is still supported at 5.1. If you were really concerned about that problem you would of checked the iOS 5 requirements page and realized that.

If Apple keeps the 3.5 inch display what else can Apple do with the ipod touch?
Give it the A5 processor?

Improved battery life.

Better processor, more ram, more storage. And when available, better rear camera as well as updated WiFi and BT.

The first 2 are important so the growth in App size and complexity doesn't leave the iPod Touch unable to run them.

I recently had to purchase one for my work, and I wished the timing had been better (as I assume they'll probably update it relatively soon, maybe next Fall?).

But (apart from the slightly dim and yellow tinted screen), it works pretty well for me. I definitely have in the back of my mind that I purchased an older iPod touch that will probably be updated soon, but it's still a nice product.

How about improving the god-awful sound quality - surely the no. 1 priority for an audio player?

Are you being sarcastic? Every iPod I've owned (I'm on number 3 now) has had excellent sound quality, and I would call myself at least a borderline audiophile.

You should recheck your standards, then. The ipod touch 4G, 3G, 2G have a noticeable worse sound when compared to the best audio quality iPods, which were iPods 1to5.5G (the very first), nano 1to3G, mini and touch 1G, iPhone 1 and iPhone 3G.

I'm dissappointed that it was not upgraded in 2011 but understand that Apple is interested in the money makers.

By not updating it it gives the ipod touch users a bump towards the iphone if they want upgrades. The ipad and iphone are the biggest money makers for Apple so it makes sense.

The ipod touch isn't going anywhere, not only does the device sell well it also makes them profit at the app store.

I think we will see a bump in specs this year just to keep it compatible at the app store.

As far as some saying carrying two devices isn't practical (or modern), I disagree on the simple fact that battery life in these all in one devices suck especially when used frequently. The battery on the iphone would not last through my usage on apps and music let alone using it as a phone.

Before I even consider going over to the iphone there needs to be an improvement in battery life. I still feel two devices workout better than the all in one devices.

Documentation? This is the first I personally have heard of this. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't true, but I'm going to need some help to get there.

Do you have a source where this is verified? What is inferior about the sound?

Wow! Consider me educated! Well done, sir.

I know about the benefits of Wolfson DACs (my 3 year old Pioneer blu-ray player features them for CD music playback), and it outperforms comparable players costing 3x as much!

I never knew any iPods featured this processing! I wonder why they went away from them? Power consumption when the Energy Star spec changed?

I'm sorry but as the owner of a 64 GB iPod Touch 3rd Gen, I assure you that 5.0 (and 5.1) run fine on it. Firmware updates surely didnt stop, you just apparently decided not to load them, and now you are preaching about Apple forcing you to upgrade when they have done no such thing.

I for one would be expecting another 3 years at least on top of that of useful life.

A 2009 iPod Touch will still be a great iPod in 2015, but your ability to run the latest apps of that era will be limited.

That's the shame of free market capitalism, monopolies needless to say doesn't innovate since there are no competition.

I fail to see how an iPod touch not supporting a latest app makes it landfill material. Maybe it cannot support the latest features but it is nowhere garbage. The only time it should be in the landfill is when it physically stops working.

Even without being able to upgrade to a IOS version 3 or generations newer the older iPod touch's still do exactly what they were designed to do when they were purchased. They play music, run a lot of apps, surf the web and act as a personal organizer. Sure you cannot upgrade the OS past a certain point but is that really such a big deal? As much as I don't like it either we have to keep in mind that these are self contained non upgradable hardware devices that get significantly faster with each new model. This isn't the same as a computer that has had enough horse power for basic taks for many years.

The reason why the iPod touch should not go away is the cell plan in general. Parents don't want to have to pay to get their kids a $60.00 a month plan when they can pay $0.00 a month to get them an iPod touch. They also make great gift ideas. I bought all three of my wife's siblings iPods last year for Christmas. I just could not have done that with iPhones. As much as they would have liked them myself or their parents would never pay for the phone plan.

The other thing to keep in mind is that some people don't have the disposable income like some of us do. Maybe to some of us $60.00 a month isn't a lot of money but to some people that struggle to pay their bills or afford gas that is a lot of money. Especially if there are 4 people in the family that want an IOS device. $240.00 a month is just insane if money is tight. Some of us need to stop thinking like elitists and keep comparing our own financial success to what others may have. Some people would like to be able to use an IOS device without that constant monthly burdon over their head. Honestly more people should be buying the iPods instead of the iPhones.

...
Much truth here. If it can't support the latest features, someone would be glad to buy it or get it as a gift.

When the battery on my 3rd gen iPod Touch gets to be useless, I will have to make the decision between replacing the battery or buying a new iPod Touch. Right now, I would go for replacing the battery. If a new iPod Touch does get released before my battery goes, I would have to look at what improvements it gives me before deciding on a new battery or a new iPod.

Now an important issue, I can drain my iPod Touch in a few hours of use. My flip phone needs recharging every few days under heavy use. Under my regular use I try to charge it once a week. I'd hate to miss an important call because listening to music or watching a video drained my phone battery.
You can also drain an iPhone (or any smartphone) in a few hours use. Comparing a dumbphone battery life to a smartphone/tablet-type device is useless. Not trying to be snarky, it simply is. If you were to use an iPhone for nothing but phone calls, it would last for days, but not if you use email, internet, gaming, etc. I charge daily, and did with my Touch, also.
