Do people really expect Apple to reinvent the wheel year in and year out?

Reinvent the wheel? No. Show some innovation and impress us? Absolutely.

I think a lot of us were hoping the 4s (zero innovation) was buying Apple time for something really great. And what we got was something that looks like a taller iPhone 4 with a spec bump and an aggravating new dock connector.

By the way, apparently someone who's not impressed with this phone is automatically a "troll" and shouldn't post their thoughts and rather they should just quietly "don't buy it". But someone who likes the phone can post their repetitive online drool rather than just quietly buying it. Why is that? By the way, I like Apple and have owed all 5 previous iPhones.

The s2 was the phone to have when it came out. It was also one of the best selling phones around. Whether or not you liked it is irrelevant with that in mind. Samsung didn't hold back. They packed everything into the s3 that was worth having. Overboard actually...I don't need HD FaceTime, nor do I care for NFC, but it's there to either be used or turned off...CHOICE...To compensate for no quad core in US versions, they doubled the RAM.

The iPhones have all android phones beat in build quality. Other than that, they hold back. Yea, something might not be awesome NOW, but it might be in a few months.

----------

S3 has all those features already.

Oh yea, apples est feature of all....it's LAWYERS.

Apple doesn't do it first, they do it the best.

Following Apples usual releases this was one of the top most expected, next year we'll get the iphone 5s, same look just faster. We DONT need a faster phone, my 4s runs perfectly and I don't really see the need to upgrade for a faster phone with a bigger screen! This was supposed to be THE EVENT where everyone would be WOWED and everyone would go crazy over the phone.

I understand how many of you have taken this to heart and are defending the iphone, thats because I do it myself againts all the android lovers at my office!

I think we should just look at the phone and say: are we really that hyped about it? I'm not, and I wanted to share that! As I see many feel the same way.

its times like this that I cringe and understand a little the accusations levelled against those of us who love Apple products that we are part of some kind of weird religious cult. The fact I can see it and compose a post like this one is a little reassuring.

He is just stating that I was expressing what I felt about the phone and many people just start to insult by the fact that I simple didnt like it! This is not a battle people, I have A LOT of apple products and love them all. I will not be changing to any other phone. It just seems to me that its not worth the upgrade for the iphone 5

they have only been innovative every new version for example the transition from the 3G to the 4!

Yeah, I think this is what is ingrained in most peoples minds (mine included) when it came time for new releases.

3G was a departure from the all aluminum back case to a curved plastic
case.

3GS was the same styling but with under the hood updates

iPhone 4 was a complete change in style from curved plastic back to flat glass back/external antenna etc. Very nice change of pace.

iPhone 4S was the same with, again, under the hood changes.

iPhone 5, based on previous "track records", lead most people to believe a redesigned style from the previous generation iPhone. This round, it didn't come except the fact that its slightly skinnier/taller/lighter. Improvements in themselves from the previous generation however not revolutionary; just evolutionary.

I'm guessing this is where most of the "hate" is coming from in terms of the way the phone looks. Some people were expecting the WOW factor like me but didn't get it. Others find the changes in the iPhone 5 to be just right. This is the first time a new iPhone release has come out and I'm hesitant about pre-ordering. Normally I'd always be there with the flocks of millions trying to get their pre-orders in b4 AT&T's servers crash.

Well, to be fair, going to 4 inch screen and a longer boy AND back to an aluminum rear casing is more of a body redesign than the Original to 3G change.

Just saying.

Same here.
I have a 16gb 4s and my wife has a nexus one that's all but dead. Plan was to get a iPhone 5 16gb and give her the 4s.

After thinking about it and looking at the price going up + the cost of the new connector adapter I figured it wasn't worth it (for us)

So I've saved myself 200 GBP and picked up a mint 32gb 4s with over a years warranty left...

Do people really expect Apple to reinvent the wheel year in and year out?

Interesting you should choose that phrase:

'To reinvent the wheel is to duplicate a basic method that has already previously been created or optimized by others. As it has already been invented, and is not considered to have any operational flaws, an attempt to reinvent it would be pointless and add no value to the object, and would be a waste of time, diverting the investigator's resources from possibly more worthy goals which his or her skills could advance more substantially.'

The iPhone 5 is another incremental upgrade and that's fine. That's the way companies work. They feed you just enough to get the majority of customers onboard to part with their money, whilst reserving a feature or two for the next upgrade.

I think what the OP is suggesting is that when Apple shout from the rooftops that 'the original iPhone changed the face of the mobile industry forever', and follow that with 'the iPhone 5 is the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone', then you really do expect something more than just an average yearly technical top-up.

It's better than the previous model and that's nice, but don't offer me a Ford Focus and tell me it's a Ferrari.

please tell me there is more people like me?

I love all my apple products and have always had iphones, but to be honest i'm not that impressed with the iphone 5. I feel as if this is an iphone 4sv2 :s

it just feels like an upgrade more than anything. No new design, just a bigger screen (which is nice) but really don't feel the need to go and purchase it like other releases.

Another thought is why add that "block" of aluminium in the back instead of keeping a complete uniform design. I mean look at all the apple products, its one piece, one design, all the macbooks are unibody and thats what makes them look really nice, all the iphones were unibody except for the first one.

It doesnt feel like an apple design, the back is cut into pieces and i dont really like it. Am i really the only one that doesnt feel the erge to go out and buy it?

I hope the next one or the iphone 6 will have a new look!

dude you are a newbie created from fanboy based android. Just st** and don't buy. K bye

Do I like the iPhone 5, yes. Am o going to buy it, no. I already have a phone, one x, and I love it. The iPhone 5 will benefit those who have the iPhone 4 and are eligable for a full discount upgrade. If you have a 4s it may not appeal to you much. All those who were expecting NFC, wireless charging, fingerprint recognition, etc don't know jack about apple. I knew the iPhone 5 would only bring a bigger screen and LTE as its major upgrades.

Why try to fix something that isn't broke? The iPhone works superb, apple slowly upgrade it year in year out! What more can you want?

If you looking for something different.... Go buy something different!

Go android. Nobody stopping you dawg.

Were u one of those kids that took his ball and went home in the playground?

You do realise there are a lot of apple fans out there that expected more this time around , telling them to go Android is pointless , they are loyal fans who never will. And honestly u have no idea what apples demographic is user wise, so telling users that they are not I apples customer demographic is absurd.

I think you need to accept that some apple users have design backgrounds and are tech savvy. Glad your easily impressed by the iPhone 4SL (litigation)

"Am I the only one that doesn't like the iPhone 5?"

Do you truly believe the answer to this could possibly be anything but no?

If not, do you truly believe you'd be the only one to start a thread with the same opinion?

If not, then why did you start another?

Wouldn't it sound dumb to join one of the many other threads started by people who don't like the iPhone 5 and post "Am I the only one that doesn't like the iPhone 5?" Another thread on it is no different.

There's no need to fix something that isn't broke, and that's exactly why I'm sticking with my 4s for now.

But what more do I want? A lot more if Apple tell me I'm going to get 'The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone'.
It's the inflated chest-beating that I find patronising and an offence to my intelligence.

Apple doesn't expect most 4s users to upgrade....its for people who a 4 or older iPhone. BTW the design might 'look' the same, but its really different construction (Unibody, aluminum)

Picked up a S3 a few months ago and an interm phone between my 4S that I sold and My New IPhone 5, I can't wait till the 21st to finaly get back to an IPhone. It will be my 5th version and even if I had not sold my 4S I would still be inline for the new one as it is defiantly a good upgrade.

After using the S3 for a few months I missed the syncing between my IPad and my phone and the level of service Apple offers. Will be in line for the 5S next year as I am sure it also will be an amazing upgrade.

Can't take OP seriously, he has no idea what unibody actually means. (see lumia900) He doesn't understand what a re-design is. He has no concern for performance and internals.

I'm tired of seeing the same old arguments rolled out, with no forethought at all. All you guys want is a drastically different LOOK, so that people do t have to ask which model you have. At least call it for what it is. It's fine if you don't like to swim, but stop saying its because water isn't wet enough.

You've nailed it! Keep your 4s then!

I'll be upgrading my 4s for the 5. Everyone is happy!

I think we are indeed calling it what it is: A phone that looks like a taller iPhone 4 with a mild spec bump and an annoying new dock connector.

Or we can call it "kinda boring". Take your pick.

Funny you say that, I'm a web developer and I have a graphic design degree, I have followed and loved all the Apple product releases, heck ive bought most of the releases. (rMBP is amazing!) So no, its not just about the design. I have a 4s and honestly I cant see why i would lock my contract again for 3 other years and pay 200 for a speedier phone. My 4s does just fine!

Now compare the performance of a 3G to a 4 and now were talking, but this just doesnt seem like its worth it.

I was expecting more from Apple and they disappointed, as many of you have said, its just a bigger screen, different dock and faster chip, doesnt that sound like a 4 to 4s kinda thing?

- Larger screen
- A6
- 4G LTE

I'm sold.

- Larger screen
--- Still so tiny it's a joke in 2012. Also the only so-called high end smartphone that's not 720p.
- A6
--- With the dinky low res screen, you can't really take advantage of it
- 4G LTE
--- So I can burn though my month's worth of data in 10 minutes instead of 50. *YAWN*. Not to mention this would have been big news in 2010 but it's not 2010 anymore.

I'd be sold. If they were competing with the market in 2010. In 2012 it doesn't even hold a candle to phones that are $200 WITHOUT a contract.
