You mean like Pac Man, back in the day of quarter-drivend video games?
OP -Just because you've played out the game doesnt mean everyone has. Remeber the
"gee-whiz" feeling you got upon purchasing and playing Angry Birds? That's how millions of new purchasers are feeling.
Old man Bernie is right -- Although most of us played it a long time ago initially, there are two official reasons why this title is Monarch title of all other games in its class:
1) Reason Number One - The mass appeal has gone critical mass. After it was popular, it became super popular. At first it was the game everyone was playing, then, even people who skipped it, went back and downloaded it to see what the fuss is about. Everyone was impressed upon trying it. The sounds are so simple yet so cheaply effective to all humans and especially fans of cutesy-ness, it was a complete subtle masterstroke. The physics are cool too.
2) Reason Number Two - It only gets super addictive once you are really good at it and are looking to get 3 stars on the level; THATS when it becomes crack --the second time around. A lot of people made comments which were wrong because they only played the game on a surface scale but all these people who brought the game to critical mass continue to play because they are trying to get to 3 stars on every level which takes a long time and strategic skill and this extended advertising saturation just balloons the amount of people interested.
So pretty much there are many little elements. The sounds advertise for the game because they are so goofy and intense and cheaply iconic. People either recognize it or are curious about what all the goofy jolly and glee is about. Then the initial impression with the physics and the silly-yet-entertainig visual design and overall premise keep you hooked long enough for the long term strategy to kick in. Its simple enough to pop into quickly/briefly, or deep enough to play for months trying to solve the puzzles.
In game design terms its a masterstroke of genius. It covers all the usual design hot points extremely effectively.
Once you're addicted to getting a perfect outcome on all levels, while pooping, you welcome all those extra holiday and rio editions because it feeds the hunger.
I have played others but they never quite got on the mass appeal level of Angry Birds. Tiny Wings lately matches it in pick up and play simplicity but it gets old faster (Yes I beat it and flew through level 4 while of fire). Cut The Rope, although its an even more polished game, its not quite on the level of depth and puzzle solving intensity. Doodle Jump was never in the same league and was retarded gaming. Flight Control was so boring why would I keep playing that? It just stressed me out and started wayyy too slow every level.
If you analyze those elements, it makes sense that Angry Birds is so popular. It pops up everywhere in pop culture and it has had a massive slope of spread and growth, popular and critical success, and has completely changed the way we poop.
