The high resolution of the retina display is fantastic. It is very annoying that it is not available with an anti-glare screen. Apple initially claimed that the screen has significantly reduced glare, but, in the Apple showroom, it looked just as bad as the regular glossy screens to me. Apple's love affair with "glossy" just baffles me.
Honestly, it is not as bad as the last gen MBP's. There is glare but you will definitely see a big difference gong from cMBP to rMBP.

Have you actually seen one?

This.

If you haven't seen it in person then you don't have a clue.

From all the notebooks I've used the screen is by far the best and just adds to the whole experience IMO.

Go and have a play with one, come back and tell us your thoughts.

sorry but this is absolute BS. "almost every application"? a VERY limited selection of software has been updated for retina/hidpi. and the mac UI is NOT all vector based or else why would you would have to create multiple icons of different sizes for apps.

True, but "almost every application" displays text. And it's on text that the biggest difference is seen, whether or not the authors know it (unless they use their own text renderer, and there are relatively few of those and most of them are now fixed).

I sort of understand the OP's point, in that not having seen a Retina screen he doesn't get why pixel doubling will help. But it's not pixel doubling, it's pixel halving, and (particularly with text) that makes all the difference.

OTOH, if you get one, be prepared to hate your existing display. I used to use a 30" Dell monitor at 2560x1600 for everything, but although it works fine from the rMBP, it now looks awful by comparison. As soon as there's a 30" retina display I'll buy one.

I was ready for what it was because I'd already had an iPad3. To be fair, at first I wasn't blown away by the iPad3. It was only after a few days when I picked up my old ipad2 that I realised what was going on. So I was ready when the rMBP turned up and it was precisely what I expected -- stunning. I could imagine that someone who hadn't had an iphone 4 or ipad3 would not quite "get" what they were seeing if their first retina device was a rMBP.

As to "cosmetic", that's just nonsense. No matter what computer you have, 99% of the information it gives you will be through the screen. Even 25 years ago I always used to recommend that people bought whatever computer they needed and then spent extra on a really good screen (in the PC world). I used to change computers every year or so, but would buy the best screen money could buy and keep it for several machines in a row -- I still have my NEC 6fg, and the Viewsonic unfortunately died a few years back. The next one will be Retina, without a shadow of a doubt, I'll keep the Dell until then...

----------

Eeeeek! I just found an article about the NEC 6fg, and it's there sandwiched in between adverts for dBase, Borland Paradox, and the new MS-DOS 5 upgrade... that makes it suddenly feel like quite a long time ago!

As for the technical it`s been explained enough; Retina is easier on the eyes, better viewing angles, greater contrast, more accurate colour, you have the ability to alter the size if your workspace on the fly thanks to scaling. portability is up, overall it`s really a great portable.

What i have found is that as you use the Retina more, you really begin to appreciate the machine more and more, five minutes in the Apple store not going to cut it. The only absolute downside if for those who like to tinker and the Retina`s extremely limited upgrade path.

Some will have genuine issue with the retina, the "Hater`s" and the rest...

As the individual you must filter the content of the internet very carefully, everyone is a "Pro", everyone the "expert", for the most part they are not, some are well informed, most far from it . If you need help to make a significant purchase, or qualification on hardware, wait for a recognised source, not the kid with 10 minutes hands on in Best Buy ;)

psssst i give you a tip, all MBP are going to be Retina soon, Apple`s not noted for elaborate product lines ;)

You obviously are clueless about the computer techs in Bestbuy. They have 40 hours a week, listening to STUPID customer ask the same questions day in and day out, probably some of the same stuff we see here! In addition they do mandatory upgrade training for each computer model. Are they the ULTIMATE PRO, probably not, but I bet they KNOW a bit more than you give them credit for. JMHO

I've played with one, and it's much nicer compared to the current MBP, but compared to a matte screen it just seemed like more of the same. I'm quite happy with the 1440x900 on my 13" screen, and I was quite happy with the 1440x900 on my 15" MBP before it.

The benefits of a retina screen is very real. And considering that you will definitely be looking at the screen every time you use your computer, it is definitely a worthwhile investment. However, the bigger question is - is it worth the trade offs (higher power consumption, dearth of retina-optimized apps, more taxing on gpu).

I have a retina MBP and for the most part, love it. The display itself is amazing, but un-optimized apps and things outside of OSX can get annoying. (bootcamp sketchy at times and Linux is unusable)

Admittedly, i'd have preferred a 1080p or better yet, a 1920x1200 panel. :)

Definition of Hype

Let's be clear...there's a significant difference between the Retina and Non-Retina displays for those that have reasonable vision to see it. This is not hype, it's fact.

hype (noun) extravagant or intensive publicity or promotion.

hype (verb) promote or publicize (a product or idea) intensively, often exaggerating its importance or benefits.

That's a match for what is typically posted on this forum...

Fact is it's real clear, retina is all the hype.

It is too small a screen for professionals, you have to plug into a larger screen at home or office, it isn't great on the road, I use the retina eyefad and will be buying the 13" retina macbook pro for the tours. Seventeen inches is perfect to completely replace your desktop if you wanted to and remain productive, or do like me and have 3 TB displays and those are the only things on my desk when I plug my 17" into them.

If I ran a company like :apple:, I would do things real different. I would trash the macbook pro line's 13 and 15 inchers, make the 17" the queen of all laptops, upgradeable to no end with a retina display and slim powerful form factor, in the eyefone 5 sleek black finish etc. Give the airs all retina so 11" and 13" airs with retina. Get rid of the eyemacs while keeping the macpro and giving all the TB displays retina. Trash the big eyefad and keep the 7 incher.

Less hype and fad choices, leaving more reliable and really (decisive) professional options.

The first thing you should learn is the actual name of the products.

The first thing you should learn is the actual name of the products.

...the thing is... you should learn new things too, we're all learning together. but first you need to learn to read between the lines, you'll miss a lot of things in life if you just take things face value, fo sho. you need to embrace your inner child and play with words, let them express what you really mean... etc and stuff...

PLUS: no one is paying me every time i use the 'actual' names of these 'products' so there.

Perhaps.....however in this case, the "hype" is worth a look as opposed to being ignored.

Look see but don't buy!

Perhaps.....however in this case, the "hype" is worth a look as opposed to being ignored.

Just look don't buy.

I'm near-sighted and can read text fine at an arms and some lengths away from the screen on both late 2011 17" (anti-glare) and the retina (set to 'more space' scaling). There isn't much difference to me, it is really clear but only next to the current 15", 13", and their airs, next to my late 2011 17" I really can't tell the differences. Only difference is even retina set to more space, there isn't actually more that is on the screen than on my 17" hands down.

The retina runs a ton hotter performing the same huge tasks as my 17", but my 17" cools down considerably quicker. That is why I got a refund for my maxed out retina macbook fad. They should have come out with a 17" retina Maxed Book PRO. Would have made much more cash, if they updated all the Airs with retina, scrapped the 13 and 15 inchers in the macbook pro line and updated the HECK out of the 17", shame on :apple:.

I'm glad you don't run apple. 17 is far too large for my use, and the 13" models are too slow. The 15s generally pack the same horsepower as the 17" models with a smaller footprint.

+ I find the retina MacBook to be more useful even in clamshell mode. I can output to 3 monitors without having to use Apple's displays. In windows, the HDMI can even do 2560 with no fuss (I really hope apple allows that in OSX soon)

No, you're not. It is hype - and truthfully it's not even that fantastic of a display compared to higher end displays on Windows-based laptops and even in comparison to the regular displays used in the MBAs and cMBPs.

Not to mention it is plagued with issues.

I find the exact opposite to be true when comparing my rMBP to my '09 MBP 17" w/Hi-Res Display

Yes it is. You can complain about certain retina misgivings but that ain't one of them.
Some PC's have IPS based laptops screens with 180º views. Not at the same density and with messy matte coatings though. The rest have 60º-80º viewing angles and are TN based and have incredibly slow response times. Maybe give us a technically spec'd PC manufacturer and panel specs and we can discuss but otherwise you are just saying emptiness.

Yes it is.

It's just an opinion. I personally don't think it is that much better of a display than the "regular" ones, and I have seen IPS displays that look much better.

Again it's just an opinion - not a statement made on a technical standpoint.

Perhaps.....however in this case, the "hype" is worth a look as opposed to being ignored.

The excitement on this forum for the rMBP is a repeat of the MacRumors SSD fad that swept the forum after the Intel MBAs were announced and third-party SSDs became available. Predictably, SSDs (and now the Retina MBP) are touted as the computer equivalent of the Second Coming, recommended in many threads even when they don't address the OP's reason for starting a topic or within a stated budget.

Many Mac users do not need the Latest and Greatest hardware; many people use only a fraction of the computing power available in base model Macs. And yet you can count on MacRumors forum denizens to insist that only the most expensive Mac is worthy of consideration and that the more affordable alternatives are yesterday's technology. Apple laughs all the way to the bank as its well-tuned advertising machine works its magic with consumers who are trained from an early age to spend money they often don't have for technology they don't really need.

I never said that the Retina MBP should be ignored. Just take the usual MacRumors forum hype with a grain of salt and be sure to take a close look at what the rMBP has to offer before plunking down your hard-earned cash. (Or adding more $$$ to your credit card balance...)

What you initailly said was:

Ignore all the posts trumpeting the retina display and Be Happy.

I said you should not ingore anyting, take a look and judge for yourself.

This I do agree with and essentalliy have suggested the same.

You can either believe the ^^^ "hype", without citing any examples or check it out for yourself and make you own decision.

Should I have to cite examples when giving an opinion? I'm not composing a research paper.

With respect to being "plagued with issues", you have a two week return policy to get one that's perfect just like mine.

Good luck!

Yep because what you should have to do with a computer to receive a proper one is return it 17 times. Good point.

No..but if you are trying to help people make a correct decision it should be based on facts and you should back them up...otherwise your statement is just an emtpy opinion. So which displays/laptops are your suggesting are a reasonable alternative??

17 times lol....mine was perfect right out of the box, just like the vast majority.

It's just an opinion lol. I have seen IPS displays as well as "regular" displays that look better to me than the Retina screen of the rMBP. What is so hard to comprehend? Why so defensive?

17 times was obviously an exaggeration, you know what I mean.
