I know Apple think we all need to think the same and have all icons and buttons all the same.
Paranoid, no? If you want to customise the thing to death, get an Android device. Apple's device is as user-friendly as it is because they have locked it down and limited what you can mess about with. I want a tablet that I can just use and have it perform a job. It's not a designer piece of technology that has to be "mine"...

Folders within folders is a good way for users to lose track of Apps (and therefore chew up space) and I don't see an elegant implementation for it (if you wanted to re-organize things you could end up spending hours dragging icons around in a maze of folders-within-folders-among-folders etc.). I thought half the demands for iOS were for multitasking and widgets, but people also want to bury their Apps behind multiple touch interactions. There's no arguing about it, people are used to the desktop OS way of doing things I guess.

I think things are fine without it. Apple might make it happen and do it in a usable way. Whatever.

Just to add that I love them, but I really really feel you should be able to make at least 1 level of sub folders.

I would like to have just 1 folder called games.
And in that, sub folders, called things like "Sports", "Arcade", "Driving", "Puzzle", "Card", "Board" etc.

Would be a lovely neat way of doing things.

Please Apple allow at least 1 level of sub folders.

It's not perfect, but basically I categorize my home screens as my "main" folders - a games screen, a news screen, etc. Then within those screens, I have "Arcade", "Driving", "Puzzle", and so on folders.

Not perfect, but it works pretty well :)

I dont like the fact that you are only allowed a certain amount of apps in 1 folder.. They should be limitless. (for stock non JB iOS)

I just wish I could say, hit a button that'd put them all into folders for me. Into the categories that they're supposed to be in.

Folders are the best way to keep things organized and I use it. You may not use it if you don't like, problem solved.

This is what I do as well (probably common) and with this in mind, maybe a screen title would be nice.
i.e. Have a screen titled News and on that screen have folders named World, National, Finance, Sports, etc...

I don't care for them..

They are okay, but I don't really like themmm...

But I mean what is Apple supposed to do? Lol. They did that so you can actaully see the apps inside the folder, so you know where they are.. but different colors and things could be nice... you know you can go and suggest that to Apple... just go to apple.com/feedback

I use them on my iPhone but not on my iPad.

Doesn't seem right on the pad IMO. Hard to explain.

This is a reasonable idea, if one change was made. That's the ability to have different backgrounds/wallpaper as you scroll left/right to different screens.

So having a folder called "games", and within that folders for "arcade", "puzzle" etc. is a way to lose apps? Riiiight... It's not about burying apps, it's about minimizing the amount of scrolling around you have to do, because you either bury them in folders, or you bury them in other screens somewhere. Don't think you are clever by implying that people want to use it like a desktop, but at the end of the day, that's what it is, and on my desktop I have folders within folders to help me organise what I have, and I know where EVERYTHING is. If you forget where something is, you don't need that app, simple as that.

Folders/screens/labels, whatever, it's just a form of metadata, and to that end, the search in iOS makes it very easy to go straight to your apps, but then I guess you totally forgot that existed, given you can't even remember what apps you bought (or *cough* stole *cough* on your jailbroken iPad, and thus have way too many to keep track of).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I'm the same way.

Though I was going to like folders more than I actually do. I've ended up only having one on my iPhone and iPad, to put the apps that I hardly use in.

But, nice having them for when I change my mind.

I do pretty much the same thing too, except that I'm happy to leave regularly used and new Apps outside of folders. I find that this approach works well and is much easier to browse than a nested hierarchy of folders. For example, if I'm in the mood for a game a few swipes left or right will show me the majority of games that I have and let me pick one. If they were in nested folders then I'd have to repeatedly drill up and down to see the same information.

One thing I would like to see however is an expansion of search. Currently search only works for finding a specific thing. What I would like is something closer to iTunes where you can choose either all songs or a genre and then choose now you would like to sort the results (alphabetically, by last played, by last added, by most played etc.). I think something similar for Apps would be a good alternative way of finding what you want.

IMO, folders have been an obsolete user interface since the GUI.

Searching is better.

There should be a bunch of categories you could use to filter - recent, frequently used, games, utilities, etc. Apple should be tagging them anyway, so it wouldn't need any user tagging.

But folders ... hate the things. Except for moving stuff around, or backing stuff up, but that's not the point here is it?

I wouldn't say that I 'hate' folders but I agree that we should be looking at something beyond them. The problem with folders is that they are only suitable for asking one pre-defined question or series of questions. For example, the artist-album folder hierarchy for organising music is fine for finding the albums that a certain artist has recorded; but it's useless if all you can remember is the song title or that you listened to the track yesterday. Plus the user has to do all the work of organising new music when it gets added.

Quite what comes after folders is the difficult bit, at the bottom level these are likely to be database queries, but how do you express these choices in a way that everyone can understand. Maybe the iPod interface would be a useful starting point, it allows multiple questions to be asked in a way that lots of people are familiar with.

I dunno :)

Just done a count, I have 197 apps in total, including the standard ones the iPad comes with.

That`s a big `ole pile of apps Piggie.
I can see now why you need folders :)
I will get round to organizing mine as I do prefer things to be "put away".
I like the idea of folders, just need to get round to organizing the iPad a bit

I like them. I don't really care for the way they are displayed (all the tiny icons in it) but I like how I can shrink my 3+ pages of apps down to almost 1 page.
