I have a gmail and an exchange based work account and I find the mail program to very clunky and hard to use - really wish there was a good 3rd party alternative.

Also coming from a blackberry device, I find that the iPhone email sucks.

You can't compose a e-mail and add attachments.
You can't reply to a e-mail and add attachments.

Why apple has to make this restriction is beyond me.

I fully agree with you...

Well, after searching a bit I found a "solution" for this.
If I want to send an email with attachments I use iFiles.
Just tap on the file you wish to send and you're done..

Less than 25 email's a day max --- can you say POWER Email user?. If that is the user profile Apple is using no wonder Mail is -- well the way mail is. Sending or replying to emails with Attachments is a PITA!

My 2 cents.

On the contrary I think iPhone email does a good job such as replying, forwarding, moving or deleting, the ability to view folders and move emails to folders, which blackberry/RIM who claims to be the pedestal of email can not even do one of those simplest things of viewing folders on IMAP or exchange emails.

The iPhone email client with it's big screen, full HTML support houngan enjoy viewing your emails the way they were meant to be viewed, been able to move my emails to any folder is priceless. Why is it that on a blackberry you can't access your personal folders ah?

Come on let's be realistic here, as most of us don't get Bill Gate rate emails. I myself get about 5 personal and 17 work emails a day and the iPhone 4/iOS email client does a superb job for me.

For past & present BlackBerry users to know, is the iPhone is primarily a consumer entertainment device. They have funny fart apps and all kinds of kids stuff. Take a look at the apps and you'll see. Even soccer moms love iPhones.

Apple has never taken business seriously, and only recently given it consideration to satisfy their desire for more money.

Therefore it's reflected in the email system. Slow, not that reliable, and without a fast notification system email is an aside with Apple.

That said, give them a few years and I believe they'll get serious and include a great email system

An iPhone is to be seen with. It's a status symbol to Apple enthusiasts. It's also for fun. Perfect for everything but getting things done in an efficient businesslike manor.

You can't send email attachments without 3rd party apps? Wow. That alone is almost a reason not to get one for me.

Also, as an aside, can you plug an iphone into a PC with USB or connect via bluetooth and download files to it like a USB keychain drive? I heard there is no equivalent of a Finder on the phone and you can't store files on it. That can't still be true right??

I've read recently that Apple was trying very hard to get business people to use their device and dump their old blackberry device...

In order for serious business's to accept Apple's request, Apple needs to "fix" this email structure. I do love everything about the iPhone with the exception of the emails... in this instance.. I wish I had my blackberry back.

i setup my gmail as exchange also.. still wish there was a mark all as read feature.. not that hard.. maybe next os lol but there are way fewer gripes on iphone than BB let me tell u... the video this thing takes is just amazing. go :apple:

Solution - is a 2FER - Have to keep your email device (BB, DroidX etc...) and Iphone.

My phone also seems to go to "sleep" sometimes wrt email push.

I have 4 exchange accounts configured and 1 gmail account (set up as gmail not exchange currently).

For the most part throughout the day, it pushes fine and I get the audible notifications. However sometimes, and especially during the night, it seems to break down. When I wake up in the morning, I grab my phone, open the mail app and all of a sudden it "wakes up" and it's just beep beep beep as all my accounts check and get up to date.

Never used to do this... Running 4.1

It supports HTML and isn't truncated. Works for me. I would like to be able to see if I have mail from the unlock screen though.

i do have my account setup as an exhange....

question for people with push properly setup on their phone using gmail

for example you unlock your phone to check the time will your mail indicator show message unread with the number even if you do not click on it?

or do you have to click on it and it then says d/ling messages???

thanks for the help i really love this phone and am not being negative just trying to get it setup perfectly

My iphone is also set on exchange because it gave me more options then if I just assigned it as a gmail account.

to answer your questions:

Yes, it will show unread mail w/out me having to actually go into the app. Also if its setup on exchange their should be an edit button that will help you delete multiple e-mails when checking your emails w/out you having to open it, I use it all the time considering I get some junk email from time to time

I set up my gmail as exchange. However my msn and aol mail do not show up. I have to physically go and click on mail and hit the check mail button to get it. Do I have to set them up as exchange as well? I have push on..

Nope, there is no direct file storage on the iphone and probably never will be from what I understand. The solution everyone seems to suggest is to use Dropbox. Dropbox has an iphone app which will allow access to the files sync'ed to it's online server from your PC/Iphone.

Anyway, this is my biggest complaint about the iphone. You should be able to store whatever files you want to on it via bluetooth, USB cable and Wi-fi. Then be able to attach them to emails if you want too. But sadly, it doesn't allow any of that.

iphone e-mail: horrible at the power of 10.

No, you are not the only one.

I too think that e-mail on iphone is beyond bad. I receive notifications, then the e-mail is not visible for minutes, then eventually it is downloaded from the server, and eventually I can read it (but only if I am lucky and the message IS actually downloaded from the server (sometimes the iphone hangs for 234 hours withut downloading sh***)).

Then we can talk about how to track incoming and outoging messages (i.e.: did I reply to this guy? what did I say?): a total mess.

Blackberry allowed me to deal with my e-mail without even having to think about it. iPhone 5 made me slave of my PC again. Puah!

ok so i have spent all night messing with this because email is very important to me

here is the verdict the iphone has push email with gmail when using the exchange option

BUT..... it is slow compared to my verizon blackberry

the blackberry was literally instant where this iphone takes 45 seconds to a minute to come through

this can be annoying when im on the phone wiht the customer waiting for an email to come through but it is something i am going to have to live with

EDIT:

FINAL RESULT OF THE NIGHT

it must have taken some time for the phone to update with google sync but now push is literally instant (like hit send and its in my mail box fast) my IP4 i am very happy just as fast as the BB

now if i can just hit read all i would be even happier!!! :D

Here's the problem I have and I too came from Blackberry (9 years). I have my company email setup through Exchange and the push works great. I sometimes sit at my desk and receive emails on my Iphone before they reach my desktop. HOWEVER, if you view the email on your desktop (MS Outlook) and or delete it, it will not delete the unread or deleted mail from you iphone until you open mail up. My Blackberry did this automatically without having to go in and open BB mail. This is VERY annoying!!!! I wish Apple would revamp their email system. This is one thing I really miss about BB.

Wow, way to bring back a dead thread!

Sounds like either your e-mail server or your internet connection is flaky. I don't have this problem at all on mine.

I don't know about you, but I have an icon next to my replied messafges that lets me know I've replied. From there it's two taps to go into my sent messages folder and see the reply.

You should probably go back to them. They desperately need you.

You probably need to have your IT department check the ActiveSync settings on Exchange. I have Exchange set up for my work e-mail as well, and e-mail on my phone and iPad disappears usually within a second or two after I delete it from my inbox on my Mac. I've even made lock screen mail notifications disappear this way.

Might want to update the title of your discussion so as not to give people the wrong impression.

Something like "Resolved: am I the only one..."

Glad you got your issue ironed out!
:)

Everything I use on iphone was used on BB. So, I do not want to know about servers, connections, OS, whatever. BB works, Iphone sucks - period.

I certainly have the "replied" icon. However, 2 taps do nothing different than one (i.e. opening that message). To see MY last reply, I have to do the follwoing:
1 - Check at which one of my accounts that email was sent (I use 3)
2 - Go to my mailboxes
3 - Slect the appropriate one
4 - Go to my sent items
5 - Search for the reply I am looking for

No, seriously, are you kidding me or what???

You should probably go back to them. They desperately need you.

And I most certainly will.

I think I just resloved my issue! I went into my Iphone's mail settings and selected "Mail Folders to Push." I only had my Inbox checked to push. I also selected the Deleted Folder to push also. I tested and it was a little delayed but it worked. I'll take it!!!!

I've even made lock screen mail notifications disappear this way.

So, after you delete from your MS Outlook inbox using Exchange, your email is automatically deleted from your phone without having to open up mail FIRST? Both my Outlook and Iphone do sync but only when I open up mail on my Iphone is when it syncs. Blackberry would do this without opening up it's mail program.

Here's an example, I came to work this AM and had 15 emails on my Iphone and MS Outlook. I deleted all 15 from Outlook but when I looked at my phone's home screen 20 minutes later the mail icon still showed 15 unread messages. I opened mail up and it connected, synced and then deleted the messages. This is very annoying and if anyone has a fix I would love to hear it.

Thanks!
