I had both the 2016 MacBook (for personal use) and the 2017 MBP (for work), which were some of the first USB C MacBooks. After about 2 years with both of these laptops, the USB C ports became a lot more loose and would eventually start losing connection, no matter how carefully I treated them. The USB C in my current M1 MacBook Air seems a lot more stable. If the iPhone is going to get USB C, I’d rather have them figure it out for a few generations before I jump on board. Especially with all the dust and grime that tends to get into iPhone ports. Really happy to get a stable lightning port one last time on the iPhone 14. Yeah, it’s going to take longer to transfer files to my pc, but to be honest, I can’t even remember when the last time I did that was anyways.

Agreed @Vazor. I’m a happy Lightning Luddite. Almost everything I use (13 mini, 9th-gen iPad, MagSafe Battery Pack, AirPods Pro), except for a Nintendo Switch with USB-C, has a Lightning port.

Lightning came into being in 2012 with what would be my first iPhone, the iPhone 5—thus I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for it. It’s sad to see it fading away instead of Apple continuing to improve it while retaining the same overall form.

Ideally, Apple would provide, along with the color and storage options, a connector option (USB-C or Lightning). :D

Outside of those who heavily use video and photo transfers needing high speed transfers to their Macs, I’m not sure why so many people feel so strong about USB-C.

When I travel, I usually have my Apple Watch. iPhone. iPad. MacBook. I don’t charge each of these things one at a time. I charge them all together, usually at night. So I need to bring all the cables with me as it is. Usb-C iPhone would just mean a different cable, but still an additional one.

Maybe I’m the minority here 🙃

Agree with OP. It really is a shame that USB-C has won out because, apart from availability, it is certainly the worse connector (bigger, less stable, more space for grime and dust etc).

It's not that USB-C won out but that Lightning would never be universally accepted because of Apple's tight control over it and the licensing associated with it. The market would never settle on such a closely held proprietary interface.

Honestly, I've never understood the fuss over iPhones getting USB-C. I've got more lightning cables knocking around than USB-C, and I can't really think of a single advantage that the latter grants over the former that matters to me.

I'm not against iPhones switching to USB-C, but I also don't care that they haven't.

No, you are not the only one. Many Apple apologists who think that Apple can do no wrong are fine with Tim Cook disrespectfully ripping them off by giving them a 22-year old technology (USB 2.0) for an exorbitant price.
