To me iPad 1 is a little more than a proof of concept. iPad 2 however, can be taken seriously. After I spent all the time ridiculing iPad 1 last year, I now bought iPad 2 and am pretty excited.

interesting rationalization. we call that "eating crow". how's it taste?

Keep Austin Weird

I doubt 1mill units sold because I doubt 1 mill units were made available to sell. Almost every unit they did stock sold out in the first hour or so, so calling this "first weekend" is disingenuous. They only had stock for an hour and it was gone. And at least in my area, no shipments since the first (and this is Monday noon).

They had iPad 2's for sale in the Austin pop-up store on Saturday night. It looked like there were plenty available - I saw a few stacks of iPad 2 boxes laying around, and the helpful sales associate didn't mention that any models were sold out.

Of course, maybe Apple is preferencing the Austin pop-up store since it's right in the middle of SXSWi and there are ten thousand geeks wandering around, all ready to pounce on the first FAIL! they see (they're like that). Or maybe the store ran out right after I left.

What I loved about the haters is that they called this 1.5 when in reality, this should have been the iPad and what those crybabies did was buy the iPad .5 before it was fully developed. Don't hate us for buying the new version when the product was complete. Hate yourselves for not being able to wait for a completed project. You guys got screwed by Apple, not us.

poppycock. ipad1 was and is of daily value in my business and my home. like any other tool it does a job and does it well.

what youve said above is just an elaborate bit of cognitive dissonance in order to justify your opinions & behavior. psychology 101, mate.

Of all the things you listed here, the one possible reason I'd want to upgrade from my 1 to a 2 is the screen mirroring. I don't have a problem with video and 'Keynote' mirroring, but when trying to explain how to do something on a personal web page, the 1 cannot mirror that web page on a projector. Also, since I don't have an HD projector, I do hope that mirroring works with SVGA projectors as well; it's what I use and I'm not willing to spend more hundreds to upgrade to an HD projector just yet.

You know what... that was the kicker for me. I had heard that the Digital AV Adapter would work with the iPad 1; however, it would only be good as a "Video Out" for apps that support that, but the iPad 1 would not support "video mirroring". When I read that it pushed me over the edge to go for the iPad 2. I am far too often in situations that I wish I could share my iPad screen with an external display. The iPad 1 is great for preparing a lesson and referencing your notes while giving a lesson and even having class participants read highlighted sections in annotated PDFs, but the one thing it would not let me do was share the display on a big screen. That one little feature is a huge usability increase.

I am not looking to use an HD projector though -- just a large screen HD TV. But I see your point -- would be nice if they support mirroring through the VGA adapter as well.

Yes we can!

Also, since I don't have an HD projector, I do hope that mirroring works with SVGA projectors as well; it's what I use and I'm not willing to spend more hundreds to upgrade to an HD projector just yet.

I've read several places that iPad 2 can do mirroring to (S)VGA (in addition to mirroring to HDMI).

If I'm gong to shell cash out for any white electronic it better look good. And the white ipad 2 looks effing awesome.I got the impression from the press clips that it was going to be cheap looking. Hell no!
And the quality of the device is rock freaking solid.

With you on this one. Being able to mirror what you're doing on the iPad has so many potential applications in business, education and entertainment. I can see myself using it for presentations. I exepct a number of apps built with this in mind for sharing the creative process as well as showing off finished items.

Couldn't get to the store on Friday by 5pm because my wife "forgot" to return the car until almost 6pm. And she wasn't answering her iPhone plastered to the bottom of her purse. Her car went into the garage on Friday morning so definitely am feeling like this wasn't meant to be....

Got about 48 hours of travelling on an airplane starting next week so really wanted the iPad before I left. Given the nonexistent stock at Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Apple Store since about 6pm on Friday (no evidence any of these stores in my area got any more shipments; if anything, it is clear none of them have seen a shipment), it doesn't look good.

This is Monday and so far all phone calls reveal a big fizzle. Looking again tomorrow though Walmart is saying 2 weeks now. Um, no thanks. Hard to restock if they aren't getting ANY shipments since the first small shipment on Friday.

If I can't get the iPad 2 before my long trip, I pretty much don't care when I get it. A month? Eh, who cares...just want it for the trip. Otherwise, really no rush and I might as well price shop like I do everything else.

I think given a little patience, you can definitely get one. Take tomorrow morning off, get to your Apple store at around 6 or 7 in the morning and wait it out. I've heard second-hand that all the Apple Stores in Atlanta are getting Tuesday shipments, and my local store in Baton Rouge implied they would as well. Diehards should have already done their line-waiting, so you may be the only one there.

Demand has been crazy. I was #18 in line on launch day and they were out of the one I wanted. Oh well, I just upped to 64gb.

Adults Only

Explain to us how a "static inanimate object" deserves anything? It's nothing more than a touch screen adult toy.

Adult toy? If you can more fully describe your vision of the iPad as an "adult toy", I can implement it in code. We can make millions! iPorn!

This same thing happened when the original iPad launched. Analyst after analyst lined up to project bigger sales numbers than the last. Then when Apple announced the real numbers parts of the media rushed out stories declaring the iPad a failure, a disappointment, a device consumers had rejected. So here we go again!

Best Buy Sucks

After standing in line at Best Buy for over an hour I will no longer be buying anything there. They had blue tape line to stand in line running all over the store floor and almost out the door long enough for about 300 people. They would not say how many iPads they had for sale and after handing out an estimated 50 tickets for new iPads finally announced that they were all sold out. They could have told the other 200 or more in line that they only had a small limited number for sale instead of making us all wait in line for no reason. Big waste of time there. I bought 3 iPads on my way home using the Apple Store app on my iPhone before leaving the store. With customer service like this it's only a matter of time before Best Buy goes out of business like Circuit City did. Best purchase I ever made was my TV-B-Gone Pro that is a blast turning off all of the TVs on the back wall in Best Buy before I left. :D

The demand was out of control, I didn't expect this at all. On Friday I stopped by Target in Portland, OR and called Best Buy and the Apple stores around 5:30pm. The 3rd parties were sold out, and Apple still had hundreds of people in line.

Luckily on Saturday a Mac Store in Salem, OR had iPads and no lines. Pretty crazy though.

Personally, I own the iPad 1 and I had my iPad 2 order in at 1:01am. Many iPad 2 buyers I know could care less about the camera or FaceTime. The things that sold most iPad 1 owners on this are things like:
- More memory
- More speed
- Better Graphics
- Video Mirroring
- Thinner/Lighter Design

and, amazingly....
- Smart Covers

Cameras, FaceTime and Gyroscope will be cool, but those are bells and whistles and not stuff most users will find themselves using all the time. Albeit, these features are extremely important to some users and I am betting those who really want a good camera will either pickup a Motorola Xoom or wait for the next iteration of iPad.

My guess: iPad 2 HD this November in the "Year of the iPad 2". The new iteration will have decent cameras, LED flash, and a Retina Display and maybe (just maybe) 1GB RAM. Thereafter, iPad will become an October/November launch.

I think what you say may be true of iPad 1 owners, but this article suggests a large percentage of those buying the iPad 2 are new iPad owners. Majority of those people don't care, or know about the specs. There is a huge untapped market right now with the moms, grandmas and even kids using the cameras and games. It's not the MacRumors nerd crowd apple is going for here, it's the Nintendo Wii crowd IMO (at least that is the crowd that is going to drive significant market growth of the iPad.)

IT DOESNT HAVE A RETINA SCREEN!!!! WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

.

I read somewhere that the reason Apple hasn't come out with a retina display is that all the apps would have to be re-optimized for the screen. Is that true? The apps didn't have to be re-optimized for the iP4 right? Is this not what they call resolution independence?

Anyway, I also believe that Apple will have an iPad 2 HD in Oct/Nov time frame. Small successive increments to the specs and features will keep the iPad hype up and may kill the competitors.

But, I'm hopping the competition will dig in and develop their apps and hardware to the point of giving the tablets some serious computing power and Apple some real competition. That's the full potential of the tablet, so why do we have to wait 5 years for Apple to develop? Bring it on HP, Motorola and Samsung.

Make no mistake, I love Apple products, and will be buying an iPad 2 soon, but I don't want to wait around for iPad 25 to get OSx, plus USB.

For now, kudos to Apple for selling so many. Maybe it'll spur someone to get off their behinds and give it a real shot, not just try to copy Apple.

I thought it will be a fail without retina .... ?

Mine should come in the mail soon (arrival window 18-25) ... didn't feel like standing in line in the cold weather (and wouldn't have done it in warm weather either)

I'm in the crowd that hasn't bought one yet and is waiting for "retina". But what you posted just proves why Apple didn't include retina on the iPad yet. Why do it when you get a reaction like this...

what model?

They had iPad 2's for sale in the Austin pop-up store on Saturday night. It looked like there were plenty available - I saw a few stacks of iPad 2 boxes laying around, and the helpful sales associate didn't mention that any models were sold out.

What model was left? I wouldn't touch the white 64-gig ones or any of the 3G ones myself.

At 6pm on Friday here in CT, I couldn't find any stock of black Wifi models. A couple of stores said they had stock but when I got there 20 mins later, there was bupkis. I didn't ask about white models or 3G, but after 6pm on Fri you had better chance of spotting a yeti than a black 16gig/32gig WiFi iPad 2. You had to be there at or before 5pm to get one or like me, you'll still be waiting for someone to get more stock.

I am beginning to wonder if this is a special edition product and there was only that single shipment last Friday. Not even our 2 Apple Stores got more than that single shipment on Fri.

iPad 1 was the prototype. We have all seen this before with the iPod. Looks like Apple is going to repeat this with tablets now.

Whenever you launch a new product type you have to hedge your bets. You can't be sure it'll be a success so you tend to go conservative with your first offering. That's not to say it isn't a complete offering but rather you can't go all out. In this regard Apple is no different to any other company other than it probably launches more new types of product than most.
