I am a big fan of apple as well, but find it hilarious coming here to read posts...More for pure amazement..I cannot believe how much emphasize as a society or collective group we put on a phone...Amazing really....People are actually concerned and calling apple to make sure the delivery date is truly on the 21st and not the ship date...People calling into work sick to be at home for UPS??? Last time I checked it was a phone that would operate the same as my current iphone exempt for some nice added features. Still will be able to check my mail, text messages and other features all the same way correct???
Makes me ponder about world events and how spoiled we have become. Kinda Sad when you think about people having much bigger problems than wether a new dock will link with there car...

Posts like this wind me up. It's possible to be obsessively excited about a new phone and to care passionately about the bigger problems in the world. Everybody has interests and hobbies. For many people it's electronic gadgets. So what?

+1000. Just because I really care about something, doesn't mean its the only thing I care about at all!

The door is that way... -->

If people put the combined effort of their time and money invested in iPhones, we could cure malaria in about 6 months.

You're exactly right. I cannot believe how much productivity is lost by people obsessing about the minute/second it will go on preorder and the actual date it could be delivered. Seriously? I hate to say get a life but come on people!

Who needs to get a life - the people talking about the new iPhone or the people watching the people talking about the new iPhone?! My vote is for the latter.

We had malaria all but wiped out but then they made DDT illegal

As for spending time worry about the new iphone. for the most part it is harmless. For most it is just a hobby, something they spend the money they worked for on.

I tend to not get to excited about what others spend their time ot money on, the next thing you know we will be told what size cola we can buy.

All collective growing pains as a race as a whole. We are truly blessed and privileged to have the time and resource to concern ourselves with such matters.

Thank You... for this excellent post :)

I think that's the OP's point. Perhaps we should feel "blessed and privileged" about things of greater personal value.

I'm as big a fan of Apple products and engineering as the next guy (most anyway) but am kind of embarrassed to be associated with some of the fanaticism I see regarding iToys. It just says a lot about our culture these days.

It isn't about turning our backs on real problems in the world, it is about escaping them for a little bit and being happy. A crime, I know, right?

We're bombarded all day long with the trials and tribulations of the world. The last thing we need here is this kind of negativity.

I'll save the world this weekend. Today I'm talking about the iPhone.

I've done combat tours in Iraq and afghanistan

Is it now okay for me to sit my ass for a little while and get lazy and worry about something fun for a change?

Or better yet mind your own damn business and stop giving a **** about what gets the next man giddy.

I so agree with you. I've spent the last 15 years working with mentally ill children. I'm with them everyday and some people can't believe what I tolerate on a daily basis. And if this (iphone 5) is one of those rare things that I can celebrate and feel giddy about, then I would be wrong to not take advantage of the moment. It is all a wonderful distraction.
