Apple makes kindles?

i loled at this, as much as i like apple we arent exclusive
i love my kindle and here in Australia free 3g :D

Wen ebooks came it was a dream come true. I read alot and my library doesnt suffice, and dont like to buy a paperback for $25 wen i will read it once. I got a kindle and couldnt be happier with my reading life.

I feel like i could never read on a ipad, too bright, too heavy, too expensive. and i had no need for one... i like them yes but they wouldnt be worth the money for me. I had a netbook, iphone and a kindle so wat would i use an ipad for?
this thing looks awesome and cheap too :p

The iPad can do a bunch of things, but to me it was never a real e-book reader. There's no point reading them with the screen of the iPad.

Besides, the Kindle is quarter of the price of the iPad and it's light. You may buy one and enjoy reading books. That's it, no games, no gimmicks, just books. But when you do that, you can actually see the letters without going blind.

I like this about the Kindle. Because with the Kindle I can't get distracted when I'm reading and can just focus on the book :)

If Amazon can charge an additional $50 for 3G AND Whispernet, one should wonder why Apple charges $130 for 3G alone.

Because Amazon subsidizes Kindles in hopes the book sales make up for it. Amazon is in the book selling business, not the hardware business.

Looks like a great product at a great price.

I've been using Kindle on the iPad and much prefer it to iBooks. In the UK at least, Apple's iBookstore prices are insane - the Kindle store is cheaper and has a better range of books!

+1

no frills just a book reader w/ feature i want on a book reader, casual internet browsing, dictioanry and music player.

There are two brilliant moves that Amazon has done since the launch of the iPad. Turned Kindle into a platform that allows iPad owners to use Kindle in a great app on the iPad and these new prices.

My first experience with Kindle was the iPad app and I see the utility of buying the cheaper Kindle to keep at the office or read where the iPad is less ideal.

I kust noticed...

The listing claims:

"Never Gets Hot
Unlike a laptop or tablet, Kindle never gets hot so you can read comfortably as long as you like."

They also claim that you can read in direct sunlight. The next thing will be that you can hold it any way you want. :)

I may end up buying the WiFi version. I had a 2nd Gen. Kindle, but since it didn't have WiFi, I got annoyed having to hook it up to my computer to put books on it. (Couldn't pick up the network at my house) I ended up selling that one. This new one is an amazing deal and I may end up getting one.

Great move by Amazon, really affordable pricing, and improvements on an already great product. I've never owned a dedicated e-reader before but now i'm really interested.

I was eye-ing up an iPad to cover my reading needs, but the sheer weight of it was never going to be workable. Still interested in buying a pad, but for only £109 the kindle seems the perfect way to make the transition to ebooks.

umm ok

if urs so bored with this thread you dont need to read it... although some people are... did i miss the memo saying ur opinion counted in what threads can be here?

ps does anyone watch better off ted? if u do then u'd understand the ref ;)

Okay, I thought long and hard about this, and I can't figure out what this has to do with Apple. Because the iPad competes (and not really, even) with the Kindle, a new revision of that device gets announced here?

Likewise, shouldn't there be a news story every time a new Best Buy or Walmart opens? They sell Macs and iPods.

My thoughts exactly :apple:

Still no colour then? That's hopeless for children's books or magazines.:(

Also, for all of those who complain about reading on the ipad (sending them blind one said!) don't you all read throughout the day on your iMac or MacBook? Better watch the drive home then!:p And who wants to read in the sun? You should be gardening or sleeping!

What a useless list of complaints and that is! So you only garden or sleep outside? Interesting...

I believe the whole point of the Kindle is to resemble (as close as possible) reading a book i.e. print rather than back-lit screen. So no colour is actually a feature. Don't know about you but I stopped reading children's books a long time ago.

Not a big reader?

Nice burn.

Seriously though, I'm biased as I have a vested interest in the future of eBooks, so can understand why people might not be interested, but this is a big deal for Apple. By partnering with the major publishing houses and establishing the agency model, they tried to dominate the eBook market the way they did with music downloads. The iBooks store hasn't been performing as well as it might, and the new Kindle prices (along with a UK Kindle Store) have just reinforced Amazon's position. If you follow publishing talk on the internet, the consensus is that the eBook "war" is over, and Apple just lost.

Now try telling Steve Jobs that's not a big enough deal to make page 1.

i do work on my computers all day and so would i want to read for pleasure on a bright back lit screen? and e-ink is just like real books, hours of reading and still nothing. Also there is a difference i think between full reading and the usual stuff I do on the computer, I dont just read one text for hours....

I happen to like the sun but thats just me... its warm in the summer if u ever walked outside.

i dont rly read childrens books and if i had kids i wouldnt read to them on my kindle would I?

Actually, since I saw the Skiff prototype, I've been wanting one. So far, that project seems to be about creating a product of vapourware (is that the right term?) and making a company look like that it has some potential to be bought by a larger fish that can take use of its assets. That's exactly what happened:

www.skiff.com (purchased by News Corp).

But look at this thing:

http://www.google.co.uk/images?um=1...&q=skiff+reader&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Please, make it happen! I have a lot of hope in e-readers even before colour e-screens become commercially viable.
