I think it's awesome Amazon is working on more stuff but that 3D phone thing is a stupid idea. There's a reason the HTC Evo 3D and Nintendo 3DS flopped. People don't really like 3D, it's a pointless gimmick that looks cool for the first five minutes of use but ultimately just gives you a headache.

What you fail to mention is that you have to use Amazon software or their website. And their computer software sucks big time. It really is horrible.

And don't say that you can download the music and play it elsewhere, even though that is true. But, it's also true with music from the iTunes store.

I was arguing against the notion that if you think Apple's walled garden is bad, one should really not like Amazon's - the implication being Amazon's is worse.

I think they are pretty on par as far as walled gardens go.

Yeah but are they even making any money off their ecosystem?

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/04/26/prime-is-killing-amazons-profit.aspx

Or it doesn't matter because Amazon isn't in business to make money and that's totally ok...

I never said it was ok or that Amazon wasn't in it for profits. That was someone else. But I'll say that getting people invested in your ecosystem IS a long term strategy - not immediate. So if they aren't profitable today because they are investing into their ecosystem to deliver content and devices to consume that content today to have dividends later - that's a long term strategy.

No one can argue Apple's success. But that wasn't overnight either. And the landscape and marketplace has changed a lot. Apple didn't have much in terms of ecosystem competition.

They should stick to selling goods.

And in other news....the latest iPhone killer, the HTC Facebook phone, has dropped from $99 to 99 cents. Seriously. I hope Amazon is taking notes...

who ever said or wrote that the FB phone was an iPhone killer. Was it just you - just here and now? I don't think I've seen that in print anywhere...

While Amazon is following Nintendo into 3D, Apple is already working on the first 2D phone. Not 2D screen--the phone itself has zero thickness.

I don't care if the phone wipes arses using 3D paper just as long as another competitor keeps Apple on their toes. Keep the rumors/choices coming no matter how nonsensical they are. Consumers win.

I'm curious to know exactly how Amazon is planning to profit off their ecosystem. There's very little to no profit in distributing someone else's content.

Why the retina specifically? All they need to track is the general position of the viewer's eyes. It's like they're trying to confuse people on purpose, like people aren't confused enough by what a retina display is...

I think they use the word retina specifically to lend credence to their project. Retina (as it relates to tech) is Apple's pet word and if Amazon uses it as well, they get the "benefit" by association.

I'm no doctor AND I didn't stay at a holiday inn express, but if this tech actually worked, wouldn't it track the iris or cornea? I'm thinking it would be pretty hard to track the back of my eyeball.

I think Amazon is more along the lines of Walmart of online sales. It is undeniable that Walmart is making ton of money selling others` products. Amazon, not yet... So investors are betting on the company`s future.

I have my popcorn and watching the show.

Because the prospects for the market successfully absorbing another smart phone have been SO buoyed by the success of the Windows phone and the Facebook phone.

You know how much data you'll use streaming video?

My dad watches one movie everyday on Netflix, and probably six in the whole weekend. My brother uses it everyday too, and my mother is starting to watch TV shows on there too, but not as often.

I am really not worried about the data costs. What worries me is that if I were to build a collection, it would be stuff I only watched once, and then never again.

Perhaps you're thinking too short term. For example - Amazon has already launched initiatives to produce their own content. Additionally - things have a way of adding up. Maybe today Amazon isn't making huge profits off other content - but who is to say that will always be the case.

I can't say for sure. I don't think you can either. I know I personally wouldn't invest in Amazon - but that doesn't mean I don't think their business is viable.

Whilst Apple continues to rests on its laurels, and ignore market desire for more exciting phones with bigger screens, every other competitor continues to develop further; if not beyond.

Say what you like in defence of Apple, but for those not brainwashed by Apples PR and marketing departments, the choice of other phones just gets bigger and bigger! On this, held the new Galaxy S4 last week ... wow, nice ... VERY nice!!!

(and que those brainwashed Apple'ites coments re how the Samsung is made of plastic. Come on guys, you can do better than that ... Can't you? (actually ... No!)

3D on a tiny screen. I'm getting cross eyed just thinking about it.

Didn't someone try this before? Oh yes it was Nintendo and I don't think that sold too well so forgive me for being a little sceptical.

Just make a bang tidy looking smartphone with a reasonable price tag and loads of reasonably priced content and it will sell. Not everyone wants to pay big bucks every month on a 2 year contract just get the latest must have phone.

I did the same and was surprised how light and comfortable in the hand it was. I thought it would be too big but they have a clever design. I'm holding out to see what Apple comes up with later this year but I was very tempted. I think the S4 is going to take away a lot of iPhone sales between now and Sept/Oct.

Errrrrr hello iTunes??? Doesn't that make money for Apple?

It's simple - it's a race. Get people hooked on your ecosystem and they are likely to remain. People are lazy. It's why most don't change their bank or their home energy supplier. Buy into Amazon's ecosystem and you'll probably keep coming back for the next Kindle, music downloads, video streaming subscription, etc.

I think their business is viable because its essentially a monopoly. Wall Street clearly doesn't seem to care if Amazon makes money because who can threaten them? Even the Internet sales tax won't hurt Amazon because they're big enough to absorb it, and in the process it will shut out smaller online retailers that can't afford the regulatory nightmare.

No, for the longest time iTunes was basically a break even business. It might be somewhat profitable for Apple now with the App Store but even there most of the 30% they collect probably goes to infrastructure/operating costs.

ask the ~10 people that bought an HTC Evo 3D ;)
I have an Evo 3D, and personally like the 3D feature. In any case, all of the 3D stuff can be turned on or off with one switch, so why not allow people to chose what they want?

Gotta love the sight of the Fanboiz Militia goose stepping indignantly when companies beside Apple do stuff.
Pavlov would be amazed at the clockwork regularity of the conditioned responses of deranged true believers.

And of course the conditioned response of those who swear they're objective but do nothing but point out the "conditioned response" of the believers.

Seems we have two groups who have been conditioned.

I'm actually a Android phone user, but this sounds like a terrible idea. I had the HTC Evo 3D. What a waste of time. I think I took one picture in 3D to show someone how it works. They look terrible, obviously don't show up as 3D unless they are on the same phone, what's the point. I think the whole 3D thing is on the way out anyway. I have no problem with Amazon throwing some competition into the market, but a phone with 3D capability as one of the selling points isn't going to cut it.

You're asking this on an Apple-biased forum? ;)

Biased? The Apple Fanboy to Fandroid ratio here has to be pretty close to 1:1 in message posts. You know there are plenty of Apple haters here mixed in with the Apple can do no wrong folks. What there isn't much around here is pure tech fans that are brand neutral & interested only in cool gear and concepts.

The Android fanatics have their own goose step - it's merely to another beat.

Of course you will ignore this fact.
