Ugh I forgot about the stark GPU difference between the Pro and Max....That's a huge hit to the utility of the Mac mini replacing my docked MBP, but it's going to be hard to not buy it with the adorable new form factor lol.
Also, why is the Mac Studio being left behind? Odd to have M2 sitting next to M4...
Because the Ultra chip needs more time?
Mostly because the Ultra has the worst cost-benefit ratio for Apple. Low volume, high engineering cost. So they prioritize it the least.
One of these little puppies with M4 Pro 14-core and 64GB RAM hooked up to a Studio Display would make for a killer little workstation for design, photography, video and coding etc.
I'm considering my next purchase to be a Mac Studio with M4 Max and ditch the 16" MBP. And then run an M4 Air or 14" M4 Pro as my portable.

It really is tiny. I didn’t believe it would be close to Apple TV size and yet here we are. Impressive
I wonder if Apple had originally intended to release all the products this week in a single event. This would explain the comparison chart including the new Mac mini being published to the iMac page. Quite the oversight.

Just release a Studio Display with mini LED and/or ProMotion and I would get one of these in a heartbeat. 
Because making Ultra chips are too inefficient, high cost, low yield, extremely niche chip, and more. They would probably gonna find another way to make Ultra chips as using two Max chips doesn't provide them enough performance that they were expecting.
I currently have An M1 MBP that is plenty fine, 16gb and using 60% of 1tb. Hooked to a studio display. Most of the time under the desk with just the studio display on the desk. And for my backpack and brining home or taking to lunch away from the office is an M2 MBA, 8gb and using about half of 512gb.
My brain says keep everything like I have, keep my gift cards I’ve been storing up, and keep waiting since these machines are fine. BUT having been on these forums for 20 years, needs and wants don’t usually line up
My heart says trade in the mba, use the gift cards (if I went m4pro), and get a Mac mini to stay at office with studio display and use the MBP as my new portable. I like the small mba, but 16/1 will surely age better than 8/512, especially with Apple intelligence.

Apple really needs to get their act together with their extremely staggered releases. Having to choose between M4 Mac Mini and M2 Mac Studio is absolutely absurd.
Yeah the current studio display is using 5K iMac's panel which has been used since 2014~2015. Nothing new and yet too expensive.Just release a Studio Display with mini LED and/or ProMotion and I would get one of these in a heartbeat.
Since they increased the base RAM from 8 to 16, it's time to increase SSD from 256 to 512.
It’d be nice if they updated the Max configuration, but that’d probably send a bad message. Here’s hoping skipping the M3 Ultra was a one off, even if it’s likely yo take awhile after the others.
Aldo, I wonder if the ultra gets its own dedicated design like the M3 Pro did?
