My Fire TV Cube gen 2 updated last week or so with the new Amazon Prime interface. Amazon actually did a fairly good job of redesigning the interface. Their last major redesign a few years ago basically was worse than the interface it replaced. This onE is much better. At least Amazon makes changes and improvements. Apple seems to not care much about their Apple TV devices. I noticed a few days ago that they did finally obsolete the ATV HD model.

The YT issue is two bulls angling for supremacy among the cow heard. As long as the two keep butting heads as they meander through the fields of moo poo, the YT issue will not go away. And does it really matter that much? Now a days unless you have a YT subscription you will be inundated by commercials, as well as have to listen to dopey YT influencers begging you to like their videos so they can earn more money.

Anyone with an ATV gotten the new version yet? I know they said later in the week but maybe some have gotten it sooner.

Yes, I installed tvOS 15.6 a few minutes ago. It wasn’t shoeing up, so I restarted my ATV 4K and then it showed up. It took a really long time to update this. And afterwards there was the usual few minutes following that the remote wouldn’t connect, but after a few minutes it did.

ETA: If you meant the updated Prime Video app, I’m not sure which version I have as I so seldom use it I don’t remember what it looked like previously. I have a Fire TV Cube, so I watch Prime Video on that, as well as YT on that since I can get HDR with the Cube.

The main issue with YT on ATV is that the ATV 4K 2017 can’t display HDR in YT at all, and the 2021 model can only display it if the user manually switches it on. No automatic switching capability. And of course YT and Apple disagree over codecs to be used And supported.

Who said that the redesign will be on tvos so fast? Its amazon, the apple tv will be the last device on the list.

The article said it would be available on TVOS later this week. But who knows.
No it didn’t it said over the next couple of weeks, it’s only been like 2 days since the article was posted.

The refreshed user interface, referred to as a "clean slate", is rolling out to all Prime Video subscribers worldwide over the next couple of weeks.

Ok, I stand corrected, sort of. The article I read was on 9to5 and it said this:

Amazon Prime Video will soon receive its biggest update in years, with a very Apple TV app-like with carousel and sports tab. While the iPhone and iPad version will land later this year, Apple TV users will be able to experience this redesign later this week alongside Fire TV and Android app users.

A couple of other sites have stated the same thing about ATV users getting the update this week. So that is where I got the this week info from, for what its worth.

Will this update also use the tvOS 15 native player?. Hope so, the current time bar is atrocious, almost impossible to use.

I guess that will all depend on if the native player can be combined with Prime’s X-Ray feature.
Which means Amazon and Apple playing nice together which the cynic in me would say I doubt it.

Oh ok, sorry, I haven't read that article on 9to5.
Would be a big, but pleasant surprise for me if amazon really care about the Apple TV. We soon will know.

Just by reading the title of this thread, it makes me so happy my Apple TV is immune to any crappy 'redesigns' since it's an 'unsupported' device whos apps remain stuck in 2010 where things made sense and looked amazing.

I watch YouTube via a Wii-U. Another amazing interface that no longer has to change for change's sake.

Prime Video uses the same design on pretty much every device but Fire TV devices.

On the ATV Generation 2 it's still called 'Amazon Instant Video' and the design is totally ad-free. I despise Fire TV and the mess the 'prime video' app became.

The app on the generation 2 is still using the green highlights and skeuo green buttons, and there's no ad banner up top. Categories are up top like 'search, shows, movies, etc'. Simple layout. Never knew why they changed it.

Modern versions on ATV (and I'm sure the 'new' redesign is even worse) have scrolling ads up top banner style, and it's extremely slow to navigate. If you have Prime, you try watching a show, and are presented with a 60-second unskippable ad for one of their original shows. Prime costs $16 per month yet I have unskippable ads.

Not the case with the 'old' app, which also still works on various blu-ray players (has the new icon and the title 'Prime video' but looks exactly like Instant Video's UI)

It truly sucks. Amazon was the last vestige of good site and app design. They left it alone even during the entire iOS 7 crap. It was still using skeuo until a year or two ago. I kinda hoped they'd just keep it that way. I never knew a redesign I liked. It's just change for change's sake. So I bought a lot of older, 'unsupported' products used and that way I never have to worry anymore. Or be stressed out and frustrated.

Interesting. Third gen Apple TV should be identical to gen 2 besides having more RAM and 1080p support. Same OS.

I checked the Prime app before leaving the house this morning and no update yet to the Prime Video app.

Never trust journalists to get the facts correct, especially those who exist only on the stupidnet. Plus, companies use generic terms like "coming soon" which often means "sometime before hell freezes over". The last major update of the Prime Video app for Fire TV devices came a couple years ago, and they claimed it would be available in a few weeks, but it took months and months to roll out to all the devices. If Amazon says "soon" assume it will actually be "much later". If they do that for their own devices, I'm sure they are even slower to update 3rd party devices.

Amazon is all about selling stuff, after all they are a huge, giant online retailer behemoth! Prime Video, and all Amazon devices, pretty much exist as advertisement platforms, and they are constantly in your face to buy something. Amazon goes out of its way to hide stuff so you have to search for it and they hope you will find something else along the search path that you will buy from them. It is the same reason grocery stores constantly rearrange their isles: So we have to search for the items and will hopefully find other items to buy too as we are searching. Apple isn't that bad in that regard, but they have very little decent content so far whereas Prime has a huge library of good content.

I've always used search. I have never gotten a recommendation that matches my tastes. Be it ATV, Prime, Google Play I search. It's also one way to avoid that annoyance known as 'autoplay' during browsing if you sit on something for longer than a second (Netflix!)

So the Generation 3 ATV is the same OS? I thought it got flattened or had some variant of iOS 7's UI in its last update? IF it is the same other than 1080p and more RAM, our used tech store has two of 'em. I didn't buy them as I thought the UI wasn't the same as the ATV 2. So it is? If so, I'll rethink buying them. They only want $29 for 'em.

It had, but its only a cosmetic change. It doesnt have tvOS like the the subsequent Apple TV´s.
