Oh darn. I hate flat UI. If the 3rd gen was using the same glossy beautiful UI the ATV 2 did I'd have bought them to add to more TVs in my home. They don't have anymore 2nd gens.

It's not just a cosmetic change to me. I despise flat. I hated it back in the 1980s and still hate it today. When in doubt, Roku out I guess. I'll just keep using my old Rokus.

What I meant is that the OS is the same as gen 2. Different than previous (gen 1), and later models (4 & 5).

The Prime Video app on 2 and 3 is very silk, without any clutter and mess in the UI and with an actually usable scroll time bar. There I agree with you.

So it has the exact same UI design of the Apple TV 2nd Generation? Maybe I'll get one. It's only $29 I'd be out of if I find it's flat and they just get stuffed in the drawer, anyway.

Yes, but now its flat, like I said.

2 gen.

Oh crap. Glad I didn't go out yesterday and buy them then. I DESPISE flat. I wish I could find some more 2nd Gen's.

I've been systematically getting rid of all modern 'flat UI' devices in my home or at least finding older, better UI looking generations while keeping the 'new' stuff in a cabinet for backup purposes. I don't throw things out as it's bad for the planet but sometimes I wish I could have researched before buying some of the devices.

The ATV 2 was the best UI I've seen. Just need to find more of them. So far I got two other TVs in the home that are either used with Rokus or Android TV dongles. They all sport flat UI and I just want to bring the ATV 2's design over to them. Patience, I suppose.

It's just down to those two TVs left to convert. I've gotten the rest of the house pretty much in 2012 again.

The problem with the second gen is that it is a completely oudated device in terms of support. Eventually, all apps will stop working... maybe jailbreaking with firecore could inject some more life unto it, but the slow processor and the paltry 256mb of RAM are serious limiting factors.

Me, I have an Apple TV 4K first gen now. Had to upgrade, because of the new OLED TV with Dolby Vision and 4K that we bought. In the end, is inevitable.

I don't care if it's unsupported or not. It means I'm not going to be aggravated by 'you must update [app] to continue using it' which is the incentive for getting it in the first place. It runs perfectly fine with every app I tested on it (which I have accounts with). It also has a nice UI that modern devices do not. It also never experiences the odd connectivity issues the ATV 4K did (where it claims to check network connection even though it's fine, or hard-freezes during a movie or at the screen saver)

My TVs also come from 2010 and therefore don't support more than 720p. My eyes can't tell native 720p from native 4K other than when you play a lower stream quality (say a classic TV show like the Andy Griffith Show or Green Acers) a 4K TV looks like utter crap.

Nothing too modern appeals to me. Those devices annoy me, either via ads (Samsung) or frustrations of many kinds (constant nags to update, unnecessary visual UI design changes, connection issues). I would rather just stick to what makes me happy. Either way, I'm immune to whatever Amazon is pulling...

FYI obsolescence is a subjective term. For myself, a device is only obsolete when it can no longer serve MY needs. I don't care about the needs of a developer or user that doesn't even own the device in my home. So long as it serves my needs, it will not be obsolete until that changes. 90% of the shows I watch are from the 1960s-80s. That means 4K is pointless. The only apps I use are the Apple TV, Netflix and Amazon Instant apps. YouTube is possible via my Wii-U. The day those apps stop working is the day those devices become truly obsolete in my eye. 'it's old and from 2010' isn't obsolete to me.

That’s a bit of a misconception as quite often Movies and Shows from the 60’s - 80’s were shot on film which had a higher resolution (in some cases higher than 4K) than those shot during the early 2000’s.
Granted it depends on your setup but 4K most certainly isn’t pointless.

The device is 12 years old. I'm quite impressed it lasted this long and even allowed me to login with my Apple ID. If/when anything stops working, then and only then will I make any decisions. Until then it works, works fine, and I'll keep using it. 12 years of support plus is quite great IMO. One of the things that makes Apple worth it. Older also = cheaper. I paid a mere $129 in 2019 for my 6S.

Youtube stopped working, but you can still use Airplay from an IOS device.

Sony Android TV has the new design too. I still bet tvOS is gonna be the last to receive it.

Mine doesn't even have a YouTube app. I am not sure how it gets its apps. It doesn't have Weather either. It pulled in a ton of 'apps' from my cable provider though (Starz, MLB, ShowTime, all work btw) along with the usual stuff like Netflix and Amazon Instant which also work.

I use YouTube via my Wii-U so that's not an issue.

It used to. Then, one day, Youtube updated it´s app and ended support on that Apple TV model. One day, it simply disappeared from the UI.

Netflix still support that ATV model?. Great.

I don't think Netflix ever stops working on anything. I got some ancient 2009 Streaming box with RCA branding that has the ORIGINAL Netflix UI on it from when they started doing streaming! It still works too. A couple of my oldest smart TVs all the apps broke but Netflix still works lol!

The version on ATV 2 is beautiful. No autoplay garbage either.

Shout out to Netflix for keep supporting older API and UI´s instead of dropping support for older devices. Very nice of them.

Count your blessings. All Amazon has done lately is make things worse. From Fire tablets to their Prime Video UI, to the Fire Stick launcher UI.

People are eager for the latest redesign of Amazon Prime Video UI because the current one is a mess. So confusing and clunky.

They're all confusing and clunky. I don't expect that to change. All UI today tries too hard to be confusing and clunky (gesture controls, flat UI design where you can't tell a button from text, and so on). It's like everyone has run outta ideas. Go back to the old Amazon Instant UI and everything would be fine. It's not like that had to change.

Maybe I just cannot understand the purpose of constant UI 'redesigns' where you end up with a worse version than the last and have to constantly re-learn where everything is. Why not just pick one and leave it alone? That way people can keep using what they're used to the way they always have been.

It's a streaming app. I only has to do one job. Have a selection of shows and the ability to play them via the Internet. Why must it get overly cluttered with scrolling carousels of shows I'll never watch, ads before every show they license on the platform (yet still charging $16 per month) and laggy performance? Just have a grid of tiles and buttons to start playback. Simple!

Even better, offer the user a choice. Do you want the new UI or not? Or even have the oldest version available for older, lower spec devices (such as those on Android Go or older iOS). Why not try to satisfy more people over less?

I really, in the end, just want easy access to my list or my stuff or whatever the streaming provider calls it. In the current UI, Amazon’s My Stuff is in the top row to the far right. It should be a lot easier to get to. The new UI makes access to my stuff much easier to reach.

With Amazon and Apple it is more than just streaming. Both companies are big into advertising content to rent or buy so they can make even more money off of us. All those unwanted ads and suggestions just clutter up the interface IMO, but as long as they generate revenue they will remain. I would prefer getting emails with suggestions rather than putting them as the main focus of the interface, but since we can opt out of emails they won’t go that route. Apps like Britbox which don’t sell or rent extra content tend to be less cluttered, but still lack a decent design.
